When you ask people what is the first thing that comes to mind when I say October. Some think of fall, falling leaves and beautiful colors. Some think of the foods that are harvested like pumpkins and cranberries. Some think of Halloween and the fun of getting dressed up in costumes. While others like me remember those who died of breast cancer and think of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
I first became aware of breast cancer, when my aunt had surgery for it back in 1969. I was 12 at the time, and I watched as my aunt Helen, on my father’s side, who was once vibrant, outgoing and very social, became a recluse in her own home. Not wanting to go out, and rarely having visitors. Again, when I was in my 20’s, I watched my aunt Pat, on my mother’s side struggle with the pain of breast cancer and chemotherapy. So today, I hope to spread the word and ask for everyone to do what they can so that you and others will not have to suffer.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is the month when people become more educated about the signs of breast cancer, its symptoms, and how to help prevent it. With many spa goers, being woman, USA Spas support the Breast Cancer Awareness in many different ways.
Out of every seven women in the USA, one will develop breast cancer at some time during her lifetime compared to just one in twenty during the 1960s.
It is sad but true, that in 2007, we’ve all known someone with breast cancer. This disease has impacted millions of lives, and it not only the impacts the people who have been diagnosed, but also their family and friends. Early detection is a woman’s best friend in the battle against this killer. When it comes to breast health, knowledge is not only power, it can truly be a lifesaver. |
