Know the Skin You're In

You've heard all the commercials. You've seen the advertisements in magazines. Everywhere you turn, even on the Internet, companies are selling skin care products that promise to reduce aging lines and provide a younger appearance. All the information can be pretty overwhelming.

Confused? Follow these tips to understand which skin care products are right for your skin.

The most important thing to remember when researching over-the-counter skin care products is to trust yourself: No one knows your skin better than you. There are a lot of skin care products on the market and it's easy to waste a lot of time and money trying to find the best solution. So take a minute to educate yourself before purchasing skin care products. Remember, this information serves as a guide only. Be sure to check with your dermatologist, internist, or family doctor if you have specific problems with your skin.

This edition of Spavelous “Now You Are In The Know” is designed to help you understand the choices that are available in spas and determine the proper regimen for you.  First, when it comes to skin care there are three givens:

  1. All skin types need to be cleansed, treated for concerns, hydrated and protected.
  2. There are five basic skin types normal, dry, oily, combination (oily T zone dry cheeks) and sensitive.
  3. There are three different skin complexion.  Fair skin will burn easily when exposed to the sun.  Medium skin tone will generally tan and rarely burn, Dark skin will never burn.

The last three items to consider in your skin care concern your personal preferences and your perceptions.  These items are:

  1. What is it about your skin that bothers you?  Is it acne, hyperpigmentation, lines and wrinkles, redness, skin tone, texture, color? You may also have large pores, sun damage.  Do you have eye puffiness or under eye bags that will require special care?
  2. What concerns do you have with the products you put on your skin?  Do you want a product that is all natural?  A product that works quickly and you could care less if it has chemicals? Or do you want products that are environmentally green and safe guard the planet?
  3. Your personal habits. Are you a smoker? Do you spend a lot of time in the sun? Do you take a daily vitamin? Do you consume a well-balanced diet? How much time do you want to spend on your skin each morning and night?  All these factors will affect how you should care for your skin.
