The Hat Trick … Physical Protection from the Sun

Chances are your hairdresser has warned you to wear a hat when you will be spending time in the sun, especially if you use haircolor on your hair. Extended exposure to the sun can cause dry brittle hair and faded color. In addition, the sun can cause damage to your scalp, resulting in sun burn and dryness. The best way to avoid damage by the sun's rays is by wearing a hat.

A hat gives ideal protection from the burning effects of the sun. It is effective in cutting out the sun’s rays and reduces the damage to a large extent. While mesh hats are translucent and allow sun’s rays to penetrate through, hats of breathable fabric like cotton should be used. An umbrella may also be used for protection against the sun’s damaging rays.

With so many hats on the market, what kind is best?

Women's Pantropic Gaucho Sunhat Hat

Straw hats are great looks for summer. They are stylish and comfortable to wear. This hat covers all of her hair but the openings in the weave will allow the sun's rays to penetrate and cause UV damage. Closely woven straw is a better choice.

This hat is an excellent choice for sun protection. The lightweight solar shield fabric features a 50+ UPF rating. It keeps out damaging rays and has a large brim so that all of the hair can be safely tucked in.

A ball cap is fun and perfect for casual style, but longer hair is exposed to the elements. A very popular style for a ball cap is to put your hair into a ponytail and pull it through the hole in the back of the cap. While covering the top of your hair and protecting your scalp, it allows the ponytail to be exposed and risk damage. So if you are worried about sun bleached or brittle ends, tuck your ponytail in!

Reinvent the headscarf. When the weather is especially windy, tie a colorful scarf over your hair. It protects strands from breakage and knotting.
