spa experience

Spa Experiences That Change Your Life

Everyone who works in the spa industry has a story about how a spa treatment changed a guest’s life; those who are successful in the spa industry have a heartfelt story. Success here is defined by how well you love (what you do, who you are and how much you give), how much you share that love and how you positively become a catalyst for positive loving change in others.  Often, we do not know the full extent of how we have been a catalyst, and then out of nowhere you receive a letter. An amazing testimony to the way a spa experience has changed and transformed their life. It is not just a testimony to you, but a testimony to God and to the whole concept of synchrodestiny. SynchroDestiny as defined by Deepak Chopra is coincidence but it contains a purpose. It contains a meaning. It has a direction. It has intention. And where do those qualities come from? They come from you. Pure luck in discovering something you were not looking for has magic attached. An unseen hand has guided you to that one spot, that one place in time. I'm not talking about spectacular discoveries here, just places or things that make you happy or give you joy. Who doesn’t need more happiness and more joy in their life?

Spavelous Spa Gift Guide

Remember when all you wanted was your two front teeth? I recall when I was in first grade I lost my two front teeth. That Christmas the song “All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth” definitely resonated with being high on my Christmas wish list. My two little perfect, white baby teeth were gone and the wait for my permanent teeth was on. It seemed as though it took well over a year for them to come in. It was soon after Christmas that I finally received my wish, my teeth came in. Unfortunately, they took so long to come in that my back teeth had shifted and my front teeth came in crooked. As I look back on it, I realize now that the book All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten” by Robert Fulghum was accurate. I learned that sometimes when you want something you will get it, but it may not be what you want. All I asked for was two front teeth and I got two front teeth. I suppose I also learned a second lesson back then, when you want something be specific. I should have said all I want for Christmas is two perfectly straight white front teeth. Of course, that is when my parents taught me my third life lesson that you should always be happy and grateful for all you have for at any moment you can lose those things you are dissatisfied with and then you will realize just how important they were even if they were not perfect. Would you rather have imperfect teeth or no teeth? Yes, those crooked teeth were looking pretty good.

Holidays are filled with scents, foods, traditions and memories of holidays past. When I think of the holidays, childhood memories of going to my Polish grandparent’s home are as vivid as if it were yesterday. At their home, there always was the scent of food in the air. The smell of chestnuts roasting in the fireplace, apple pie, gingerbread and pumpkin pie baking in the oven, the simmering scent of hot apple cider and warm wassail along with the delicate scent of the turkey with all the trimmings embraced you as you came through the door. The warmth from the essences of cinnamon, apples, nutmeg, ginger and cloves, told you that you were in a wonderful warm place that was filled with love.

Hot Stone Massage

Is Hot Stone Massage Right For You?

Over ten years ago, I decided to change my life, leave the comfort of my job and the high paying salary, to move into the spa industry. I knew that I had been successful in the restaurant industry, because I had started at the bottom and worked my way up. Therefore, I was determined to learn the spa industry the same way. I began working as a receptionist for a new spa that had just opened, while I went back to school to get my license as a massage therapist and my degree as a Holistic Practitioner. My first massage class and the first massage I learned was the Hot Stone Massage. The instructor indicated that this was the Cadillac of massages. I was honored and afraid to be in a class of expert massage therapists all from the The Spa at Camelback Inn, Scottsdale, Arizona. The instructor, Jean Marie Weidmann, began the class by randomly giving us a box of stones; I fell in love with that set of stones and purchased them. To this day I still use them along with new stones that I have personally harvested and integrated into the set.

Find The Right Spas

Finding The Right Spa

Whether you are choosing a spa for a one-time visit or a regular service, it is important to put some thought into it. You want to make sure that you are visiting a spa run on professional ethics with a qualified staff. A spa should also be clean, properly sanitized, comfortable, pleasant, and nice to be in. By thinking out your needs and doing research ahead of time, you can make choosing a spa a lot easier for yourself. Start by thinking about what you want. Spas offer a wide range of services including massage, facials, manicures, pedicures, body treatments, haircuts, and other cosmetic treatments. If you need a one-time treatment, you probably know exactly what you want. If you are choosing a spa for a more long term relationship, you may want to consider all of the spa-type services that you like, so that you can do all of your business in one place.  While thinking about your needs as you are choosing a spa, you will probably fall into one of two categories. Either you will be choosing a local spa or an away spa. Local spas are spas that you will develop a long term relationship with. These spas you can visit prior to booking services and you may receive referrals from family and friends. Away spas are spas that are not in your local area, they are not convenient to visit on a regular basis and you are dependent upon other resources to provide you with insight about the spa.

Sugar Lips

Sugar Lips

We all have heard a version of the old adage a second on your lips will put a pound on your hips. Recent articles on aging have developed a new adage; eating foods that are sugar laced creates wrinkles on your face. As a child, coming from a family of five, we never had a great deal of sugar or sweets in the house, and when we did, it was very quick to eaten. As I became established in my own household, I discovered that I did have a sweet tooth. My lifestyle was one of meals followed with dessert. Breakfast followed with éclairs and whip cream or yodels, Lunch followed with chocolate pudding and whip cream or Oreo cookies. Dinner followed with more chocolate cake and ice cream. In hind sight, I can see that I was addicted to sugar. However, at the time I never thought that I had a problem with sugar nor did I know the consequences of consuming so much sugar. It wasn’t until I was over forty, and started attending college to get my degree as a Holistic Practitioner, that I discovered the negative impact of sugar on my face and body. I was in a nutrition class where the instructor was looking at each person’s face, skin and body type and analyzing what food challenges we had based on his observations. When he came to me, I was prepared to hear that I looked the epitome of health. Unfortunately, I was mistaken and very surprised at what he had to say. As he looked at my face, he noticed the hyper pigmentation throughout my skin and the deep liver lines between my brows. My body frame is small and I have a pretty good metabolism, but I tended to have a little puffy stomach. It was clear to him from these signs that I was probably allergic to sugar, and unless I made adjustments to my diet, I would probably become a type 2 diabetic and develop problems with my adrenals, liver, thyroid and heart. He asked me if I woke up between 1 and 3 at night. Once again, I was amazed at how he could know that. Since that time, I have learned the language of the body when it comes to your life and your health.

Weight Loss

The Skinny On Weight Loss

Even though summer is over and many of us feel safe and comfortable having our bodies hidden in our bulky fall and winter sweaters, the holiday “seasonal seven” pounds will soon be here. Holidays are a time to get together with friends, family, and a time when most will indulge in pumpkin pie, gravy, stuffing, cakes, candies, beverages and other holiday favorites. In reality, though, studies show that most people will gain far less. The only problem is that the holidays probably account for much of a person’s annual weight gain over the course of a lifetime, and holiday weight gain is the hardest to reverse. According to most studies on the subject, the average person gains one to two pounds from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day and only 10 percent of people gained more than five pounds. Those who were the most active had the least gain, and those who were already overweight gained the most. Having worked for Nutri/System for five years, I found that many women would start a weight loss program in September. For them it was easier, because the children were back in school, therefore there were less snacks in the house, less eating out, less day time movies and shopping. In addition, it certainly was easier to find the time to focus on doing things for themselves. Believe it or not, most people will begin their lifestyle changes now, so they can be healthier and ahead of the holiday game. Besides, we all have some relatives and friends that we only see once a year, and when we see them we all want to be told how great we look. Right? Excess weight, of course, is not just a holiday phenomenon. Nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight and nearly one-third of U.S. adults are obese, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Spas The New Men's Club

For some reason, many men feel uncomfortable about the idea of going to spas. This is interesting because historically spas have always been much more for men than women. From Roman baths, through Turkish Hammams to Victorian barbershops, we have always been more likely to find spa-style health treatments and pampering for warrior men rather than women. Even as recently as the 50s and 60s, the man of the house took himself off for a hot steamy shave and moisturizing facial at the barbers, went on to his club for a massage, and then out into the city. Yet, in the not too distant past, spas were perceived as a place for woman to be pampered. Perhaps that concept started when Elizabeth Arden opening the first day spa/salon in the USA in 1910. It's surprising then that until recently, few men seem to see a spa as an extension of "the club", a place where they can retreat, bathe and be treated in the custom they deserve. Fortunately, today that has all changed. Men have taken back their spas with a vengeance. The Men Only spas have become the new men’s club. A place where men are men, a place where men can watch sports, play pool, sweat out toxins, have their over worked muscles rubbed down, and their faces groomed with straight edge razors, while waxing, body treatments, and modern day microderm facials remove the signs of aging.
