Winter-perfect skin How to care for your skin inside and out

The key to great cold weather skin — hydration.

“You can never over-hydrate,” said Lauren Faverio, esthetician at Beauty at the Beach Spa in Bethany Beach.

Winter cold, wind and heat in cars and homes can cause skin to have dry patches, be itchy and flaky.

“Drink a lot of water and you always have to moisturize,” Faverio said.

Estheticians say there is a difference between dry and dehydrated, but both can be detrimental to your skin during cold months.

Dehydration is internal and people often believe their dehydrated skin is dry. While soaking up extra moisturizers won’t cause any damage, if the right moisturizer is used, drinking water can replenish the body.

Beyond drinking plenty of water, cleansing, toning and moisturizing your skin is essential to getting that great winter glow.

Don’t forget to exfoliate to get rid of dead, dull skin. But, don’t go overboard, said Heather Martin, esthetician at Visions Day Spa in Ocean City.

“You can overdo it with exfoliants,” she said. “They can make your skin sensitive.”

An at-home regime can add renewed life to your skin, the estheticians said.

But, they said to make sure you read the ingredients.

Different products contain parabins, which has been linked to breast cancer, and alcohol should be avoided.

“These ingredients deplete your skins natural oils,” Faverio said.

Also avoid lanolin and mineral oils, Martin said.

“That will definitely clog your pores,” she said. “They don’t allow the skin to breath.

Martin suggests people steer clear of products from grocery, drug and even department stores.

“You need to go the spa route,” she said. “The active ingredients (in brands sold in stores) are not as strong, so you’re getting less for your money. You end up buying more to get the same results.”

Martin said the ingredients used in spa lines are the best ingredients and don’t have bad-for-your-skin fillers.

If extra hydration is needed, add a serum to the routine.

While people may like to use different brands, Martin suggests people use the same line of products, especially when it comes to serums and moisturizers.

“Using different lines can have ingredients that counteract each other and don’t work together,” she said. “You should find a line and stick with it.”

Before applying makeup, Faverio said it is essential to apply SPF.

“Sunscreen is an all-year-round necessity,” she said. “You’re always exposed, even if you’re just taking a stroll down the street.”

The best way to achieve and maintain healthy skin is to head to an esthetician.

There is a client consultation where the esthetician examines the skin to help determine type, necessary products and treatments.

They know the lines and can help the client decide which is best.

And, don’t forget about facials.

“They’re not just a feel good treatment,” Faverio said. “They are a necessity to keep skin moisturized and hydrated.”

There is a facial for every skin type and problem, and estheticians can help you to decide which is best for you.

Facials stimulate circulation, oxygenate skin, moisturize, exfoliate and leave your face feeling fresh, Faverio said.

There is a lot of massage involved in the face, scalp, neck and shoulders. Faverio massages hands and arms while the mask sits.

Facials should be scheduled every four to six weeks to maintain healthy skin.

Faverio recommends the Moisture Drench Facial at their spa to replenish skin’s natural moisture during the colder months.

Try the Pumpkin Enzyme Peel to treat congested skin, which is Beauty at the Beach Spa’s November special, or the Environmental Defense Facial that removes free radicals from the skin.

“People think facials are just a summer thing,” she said. “Something to do on vacation.”

Winter is a great time to go for treatments to reverse summer’s damage.

“There are a lot of sun lovers out there,” Faverio said. “You need to get rid of those free radicals.”

Martin said winter is the time to get aggressive against previous damage.

Intense treatments should be used every two weeks.
