Day of beauty much more than skin deep
CYNTHIA SALTER-LEWIS
41, Monroe
Accomplishment
Cynthia Salter-Lewis, medical director of ReNew Med-Spa in Manalapan, donated a day of beauty for women residing in the Babyland Family Violence Program of Essex County. Salter- Lewis paid for round-trip transportation for the women to come to her spa, giving them a choice of multiple services including a facial, massage and a catered lunch.
An emotional makeover
Born and raised in Newark, Salter-Lewis wanted to give back to an organization from her hometown. She said she knew that women who experienced domestic violence would appreciate a spa treatment more than the average customer.
“No one had ever done anything for them ever,” said Salter- Lewis. “It was really rewarding for me to see the joy on their faces and for them to at least for that moment in time be able to escape from a lot of the pain they were feeling.”
StacyAnn, a 25-year-old Babyland resident who received a microdermabrasion treatment, said she felt valued for the first time in years.
“It really just makes you realize there’s more to life than what you’re going through,” StacyAnn said, who could not give out her last name for safety reasons. “There are people who can be kind and not mean. It’s not the end of the journey.”
Hands-on Work
Last year, ReNew Med-Spa held a major event. They hosted demonstrations on beauty treatments and donated the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Foundation in Fairlawn. But Salter-Lewis knew that wouldn’t be enough.
“I decided instead of just do nating, I wanted to do something hands-on,” said Salter-Lewis. “I’m giving back in the way of service, not in the way of checks. I’m in spired to give back in general. Even growing up, that’s what I was taught as an individual, to give back.”
During college, Salter-Lewis volunteered a summer at Mulen burg Hospital in Plainfield. She also volunteered with Upward Bound, tutoring inner-city high school teens.
Involvement in Church Salter-Lewis is head of public relations at her church, The Tabernacle in South Plainfield. She is also the director of music, singing and training the choirs at the church.
Family Business
Salter-Lewis co-runs ReNew Med-Spa with her husband, Randall Lewis. The business combines aesthetic treatments such as botox, non-surgical facelifts and laser treatments with traditional spa services like facials, massages and body treatments.
Salter Lewis said handling all the pressures of juggling full-time work and volunteering at the church is only possible because of the support of her family.
“I have a close knit family,” said Salter-Lewis. “I would have to give them a lot of credit for helping. It’s not all me. My husband takes a lot of weight off of me.”
