Faceology – Facial Massage with Reiki CA Spa Treatment

Faceology: A Treatment Less Ordinary

Is your favorite part of a massage the end when the therapist gently caresses the pressure points on your face before finishing with a scrumptious scalp massage? If so, have we got the perfect treatment for you.

At Amrit Davaa Wellness Center (located inside Golden Bridge Yoga), Kristi Marie Jones has created a truly unique treatment called Faceology.

She combines elements of reflexology, Reiki, aromatherapy and a facial, and the end result is oh-so-much-more than the sum of its parts.

Kristi began by massaging her very own handcrafted Narayan Sole Food shea butter into the feet, and then pulled gently on our legs as we took deep breaths, letting the tension and anxiety drift away with each exhale. She used Reiki energy and her gift of intuition to help us identify, work through and release our worries and preoccupations so that we could fully experience and enjoy our treatment. (This was our second visit with Kristi, and much like our first, we found it as effective as a therapy session, but with the bonus of yummy smells and much pampering.)

Of course, this treatment is about nourishing the skin as well as the soul. To that end, Kristi applied an exfoliating scrub to the face, followed by her Narayan Affirmation Serum – a blend of pumpkin seed oil, grapefruit seed extract, aloe, jojoba, and a bunch of other good stuff. (True story: We use this product every night and it makes our skin look and feel fantastic.)

The most crazy-cool part of our session was when Kristi used a crystal to tap the pressure points of the face, thereby releasing built-up tension; it’s amazing how much we carry in our facial muscles. We were positively beaming by the time she was done, and walked out of Golden Bridge on light feet. Forget about Botox – just let Kristi wave your creases (and worries) away with her crystal wand!

LA Pamper Yourself Spa-velous

October 19th, 2008

Girlfriends_Spa_Getaway.png

With mini spa treatments galore, sweets to your heart’s content and a swank downtown Los Angeles loft setting, who wouldn’t enjoy being a girl at the Pamper Yourself Fabulous event last week? We were lucky enough to be one of the 100+ attendees at this sold-out spa day, a girls’ day out unlike any other. No sample sales to stress over or wine tastings to get sloppy during, it’s all about rest and relaxation here. For $165 a ticket (10% of the proceeds benefit the charity Step Up Womens Network), we were treated to our choice of three mini spa treatments (each about 15-20 minutes long) from some of the hottest L.A. spas and salons, which most likely charge a pretty penny for their regular services.

Even though there was the downtown hair salon Neihule offering haircuts and styling, a spray-on bronzing by E! reality TV show/tanning salon Sunset Tan and a cold stone facial massage by Cote D’Azur, we opted for the simpler treatments, plus we just got our hair done recently.

Nope, instead we enjoyed a quickie makeover by Artform Studio where the makeup artist showed us the joys of shiny pink lip gloss. We then passed out during a hand and foot massage at El Leon Spa and got polished up with a little eyebrow shaping by Christopher Watt Esthetics.

And, yup, the treatments were a bit short, offering only a taste of what you could get if you paid for the regular service. But this was also a good way to sample something you otherwise would have overlooked for fear of trying something new.

For nosh, there really wasn’t any food per se. Ciudad was touted as providing the eats when really it was only mini gazpacho and chips and dip. We were sooo hungry! And since our stomach was fairly empty save for the yummy Moonpillows dark chocolate cherry mochi and ooh the white chocolate lemon ones, we thought it wise to stay away from the “champagne,” which was actually something called Nuvo pink sparkling vodka.
Because the event only allowed about a hundred women in the Ford Brady Loft, a renovated downtown theatre space now used for events, it was easy to get around and sign up for the treatments, they didn’t run out of snacks and there was plenty of cabana seating to rest between appointments.

And even though that price of admission for a day of indulgence may make the frugal among us cringe, you should know that the goody bag that we got after the event was filled with a bounty of products that probably equaled what we paid to attend. And it’s not the sort of goody bag filled with 80% of things you’d end up trashing, rather this one had the good stuff, like OPI nail polish, Philosophy’s Grace body gel, Hemp hair products and luxurious bath salts.

If you are the type of girl who likes to treat yourself, this is an event you may want to check out next time it rolls into town.

Cal-a-Vie – Vista CA Destination Spa

September 10th, 2008

Cal_a_Vie_Vista_CA.png

Cal-a-Vie
Vista, California

Some think of Cal-a-Vie as a weight-loss resort, but it’s actually a first-class spa. The cozy antiques-filled setting north of San Diego lets you feel like you’re in the French countryside, right down to the 400-year-old meditation chapel brought stone-by-stone from Dijon.

Cal-a-Vie has five staff members per guest, the highest ratio of any spa on our list. The spa’s experts will sift through your goals and give you a card detailing your daily activities and spa treatments (though you can opt out of them or choose alternates). Your meals—balanced servings of lean proteins, whole grains, and fresh seasonal vegetables—arrive portioned to your prescribed calorie count. If your tummy grumbles and your muscles ache, simply swap your cardio-kickboxing class for tai chi or ask your consultant to add 300 calories to your diet. “That flexibility means you won’t feel deprived,” judge Gelula says.
Don’t miss: The early morning hikes. The area is called Vista for good reason.

Cost: $7,395 per week, per person, including all treatments. Three nights cost $3,595.

Laura’s Wellness may have best facial

For more than 20 years, Laura Bischoff has been helping people put their best face forward.
Bischoff and her husband Brad own Laura’s Wellness Spa in Redlands. Specializing in facials and body facials using Epicuren Discovery products, she is was recently nominated by the MyFoxLA Web site for best facial in the Riverside area.

“I have been going to Laura for a few years now, and I have seen great improvements regarding my skin and its health,” client Olga Granillo said. “I appreciate that she is able to customize her treatment depending on my skin’s needs.

“Not only does Laura help me take care of my skin, but with her positive energy and genuine kindness, she takes care of my soul and spirit while I am there.”

Bischoff received her graduate degree from the Lancome Institute DeBeaute in Paris, then managed the Lancome Institute and Harris’ Day Spa in Redlands for more than 17 years. She fulfilled her dream of owning her own wellness spa six years ago, when Laura’s Wellness Spa opened for business.

“Her charisma, love of people and professional skills are no doubt what has spurred her spa’s tremendous growth,” client Ron Squier said. “As a physical therapist, I have always appreciated and enjoyed her wonderful facials, massages and professional advice.”

Through her spa, Bischoff has brought specialty items out of Los Angeles and into the Inland Empire, such as Epicuren products, Sage Machado essential oil perfumes and Youngblood mineral makeup.
“Epicuren products are intensive but results are immediate and lasting,” she said. “I like that Epicuren believes that your best cosmetic should be your skin.”

Bischoff said she is determined to give services that focus on the each client individually. She gives nutritional counseling when necessary, and customizes each facial or body treatment.
“What I love about Laura and the spa is the personalized, caring environment,” client Shelly Almgren said. “I feel refreshed after her facials.

Laura is committed to total body wellness, which has definitely been a blessing to me.”
Recently, Bischoff expanded her services to include private and semi-private yoga sessions in the Nepenthe Yoga room. “Nepenthe” is translated as “the one that chases pain and sorrow away,” and that’s Bischoff’s goal for clients.

“It came about from noticing my own posture was changing and not for the better,” she said. “Then I realized exercise is a huge factor in how healthy your skin is. These things need to be co-existing for good skincare.”

The four types of yoga – offered by Bischoff and two additional instructors – are ashtanga, power vinyasa flow, intro to yoga and Thai yoga.
“Some key benefits from the yoga sessions offered include improved posture, stress reduction and overall improved quality of life,” Bischoff said.

Through the Nepenthe Yoga Room, which is decorated with mirrors in the shape of the sun and Swarovski crystals, she has opened up the world of yoga to many who otherwise wouldn’t have taken a class.
“I was very excited when she started offering yoga classes, because I had never done yoga before,” client Helen Gaglia said. “Laura helped me to not feel intimidated or embarrassed.”

While Laura takes care of the health side of the spa, Brad manages the technical and financial tasks and designed and maintains the spa’s website . On the side, he is a musician and leads worship at The Packinghouse church in Redlands.

The pair’s diverse interests have led to a unique service at the spa.
“We’re currently offering a `Multi-Task Wellness’ special,” Bischoff said.
“Linking the spa with your computer’s wellness, you can now pamper yourself and solve most of your PC problems in just one visit.

When you call for your appointment, mention what you need done to your PC. Then just bring your computer or laptop with you when you come in for your spa treatment and he’ll get it working in no time.”
For the spa’s clients, having these extra services is icing on the cake.

“When I go to Laura’s Wellness Spa, it is like entering a new world, one that is filled with peace and tranquility,” Gaglia said. “Laura is the sweetest, cleanest and most thorough esthetician I have ever been to. She makes me feel like I’m the most important person when she is working on me.”

Summer Skincare: Put Your Best Face Forward

As you’ve likely experienced, summer in the city can be muy caliente, which also means that sunbathing in your bikini with a margarita in hand can lead to parched, dehydrated, and generally woebegone skin. Not to worry, though; the two skincare specialists below, who have dispensed their knowledge to cadres of satisfied clients over the years, are happy to help you maintain that dewy radiance and garner envious comments, to boot.

Blue Turtle Spa

Blue Turtle Spa’s mission is simple: to feed and nourish the skin, reduce bodily toxins, help you relax, and center your mind and spirit. If that sounds like a tall order, you haven’t met Andrew Scoular yet. Regarded as less of an aesthetician and more of a miracle worker by many of his clients, Andrew’s amalgamation of leisurely spa rituals and his staggering skincare know-how keep both his West Portal and Outer Richmond locations packed with customers in need of more than just a quick beauty fix.

While Andrew’s approach to skincare is more about educating his clients on why their current products might actually be doing more to damage or clog their pores than demanding any major lifestyle overhauls, his aesthetic métier is definitely one that asks visitors to get off their butts and do a little research if they want long-term results. Andrew, whose membership in the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and his knowledge of cosmetic ingredients give him a little more street cred than most aestheticians, maintains that “each skin is unique…all Italian skin is not the same, all male skin is not the same, all 40-year-old skin is not the same…don’t be fooled by marketing. Matching the right ingredients to the uniqueness of each skin takes a lot of learning and understanding.”

While a visit to Andrew is likely to burst the bubble around all the skincare hype that product lines love to dish out, his deeper understanding of the skin’s physiology is enough to make you certain your pores are in good hands. Andrew’s approach includes a thorough consultation with clients before they climb into the treatment bed. This means going over the ingredients in the products they currently use, educating them on which ingredients might be working for or against their skin conditions, and introducing them to skincare products that could help them achieve their skincare goals.

If you want him to, Andrew will gladly suffuse your brain with lots of details and tips while you’re supine, but that doesn’t mean a Blue Turtle experience is purely clinical. The airy treatment rooms ooze with tranquility–not to mention, you get to pick your own spa soundtrack and have your senses seduced by calming aromatherapy botanicals. My treatment with Andrew was a customized Controlling Facial, which focuses on deep-pore cleansing and exfoliating with an enzyme peel and Beta Hydroxy peel to prevent acne blemishes. A purifying clay mask, antibacterial oregano oil to kill inflammatory bacteria, nearly painless extractions, and plenty of hydrating gels and antioxidant baths made the facial as close to perfect as one can get.

While 90 minutes with Andrew is enough to jostle your skincare misconceptions considerably, it would probably take a few years and countless cosmetic chemical seminars to figure out what to do and what not to do to your skin. Luckily, Andrew’s skincare philosophy is about simplicity. Rather than changing every aspect of your lifestyle, it can sometimes be merely about incorporating one great product into your three-minute routine. And of course, following a few of Andrew’s most valuable tips:

1) No strong detergent cleansers (i.e., sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium lareth sulfate, sarconates, etc.): According to Andrew, they’re way too harsh. Hydrophilic (water-loving), oil-based cleansers are the best ones.

2) Glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acids in cleansers are just marketing gimmicks: “Water negates the effect of the acid in its job of exfoliating the skin, so all that a strong cleanser will do is cause the skin to operate outside its comfort zone,” says Andrew. He recommends using exfoliants as separate treatments post-cleansing.

3) A mineral (inorganic) sunscreen with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide is a must: Unlike non-mineral, “organic” sunscreens like avobenzone, these compounds don’t break down in the presence of UV rays from the sun. Andrew’s favorite sun protectant is TiZo3 Solar Protection (SPF40), which leaves a smooth and silky matte finish on the skin.

Le Sanctuaire

Simply walking into aesthetician Rebecca Whitworth’s cozy bodega, tucked away in a nondescript alcove of Potrero Hill, is enough to calm the most harried senses and allow you to forget the big bad world of deadlines, sleep deprivation, and other deadly agents of aging. Whitworth’s diminutive yet opulent studio, stocked with floral bric-a-brac and other soothing accents, is the kind of place that emblematizes her tri-part skincare philosophy of purity, balance, and compassion.

Skincare services at this petite hideaway, which tend to attract visitors by word of mouth rather than voluble advertising, include the best of both worlds: results-oriented treatments for skin that needs serious reenergizing, and a hedonistic multi-sensory experience that stems directly from Rebecca’s background as a healer. Rebecca, who exudes a girlish warmth and administers her services based on intuition, describes her journey through skincare as one that began in an attempt to address her own challenged skin during adolescence.

“I learned that what I was doing internally was crucial,” she says. “The digestive system had so much to do with how my skin looked and felt.” This got Rebecca into teaching digestive therapy as it relates to aging, which eventually set her off in a multitude of directions, including aromatherapy and energetic/spiritual healing. Since 1994, Rebecca has been incorporating her knowledge of beauty and holistic wellness into her skincare practice.

Intimate touches like sage and lavender-soaked warm towels, healing river stones placed on chakra points, and gentle massage are incorporated into Rebecca’s facials, which clients aptly refer to as “journeys.” When I visited Rebecca, I was treated to a medley of yummy-smelling potions, soothing essential oils, and sleep-inducing facial massage—in addition to lots of impurity-zapping extractions to temper all the relaxation. “Since I work intuitively, what I do on one person I won’t necessarily do on someone else,” Rebecca explains. “The way I work, I do things on a client that I would want to be done on myself…but it’s also about engulfing myself in the customer’s experience, being thoughtful and caring about what it is they need.”

Of course, a Le Sanctuaire facial ain’t merely about getting the kind of deeply relaxing treatment that’ll have you stumbling into the sunlight all disoriented and nap-happy. Rebecca’s mixture of natural products, essential oils, customized peels, and results-based chemicals (what she refers to as “science and nature mixed together”) paired with her knowledge of how digestive enzymes affect the skin are major aspects of her work. “I love energy work but I also love cleaning up skin,” she says. “It’s a long-lasting relationship that I build with clients…especially when it comes to thinking about all the different aspects of skincare, like digestive enzymes, which you are not likely to come across unless you are talking to someone with a background in naturopathy.”

Over the years, Rebecca has hand-selected products from multiple lines, but the piece de resistance of Le Sanctuaire is L’Huile de Grace, an all-natural essential oil-based serum that she developed six years ago. The oil, which focuses on cellular regeneration and penetrates the skin with a cocktail of nutrients to promote a soft, youthful glow, hails from ingredients that haven’t been chemically altered in any way, including neroli, geranium, vetiver, cardamom, and “Sangre de Drago,” an exclusively bottled sap from the Amazonian rainforest that contains what scientists consider the most potent class of antioxidants in the world.

It would be fairly accurate to refer to the serum as something of a magic potion, because it works on all kinds of skin and acts as far more than your run-of-the-mill moisturizer. For instance, it prevents dehydration and loss of epidermal water—even in oily skin, which tends to get dehydrated despite overactive sebaceous glands. In fact, using my trial-sized sample of the oil garnered visible results in two weeks, zapping zits and reducing greasiness in one fell swoop.

“I tell my clients to use it because I know there’s nothing else like it,” Rebecca says. While keeping skin hydrated and balanced, L’Huile de Grace also gives you an extra lipid layer, which means that you get additional sun protection on top of your regular sunscreen. While you can order Rebecca’s L’Huile de Grace through her website, you just might want to pay her a visit—magic potion notwithstanding, the experience just isn’t complete without some requisite R&R and healing.

Affordable Spa Getaway Vacations

10 Affordable Spa Vacation Deals

If a spa vacation is on your wish list but you’re not sure you can afford it, think again. There are a number of inspirational spas, transformational spas, and — yes — affordable spa deals options out there. One of the easiest ways to book a spa escape on a budget is to check into a local hotel or resort spa for a long weekend (or longer). Many offer special spa-themed packages and last-minute spa deals that in-the-know locals can cash in on. But if getting away from it all is more your style, you can find lower-cost options for that, too.

“Affordable,” of course, is a relative term. So in this list you’ll find 7 weeklong spa experiences — from soaking in hot springs to fitness retreats offering ultra-healthy cuisine to all-inclusive stays at destination spas — chosen to fit almost any budget.

While cost was definitely a driving factor, ambience and the quality of the spa treatments, activities, and food were also considered in compiling this selection. They’re arranged according to price, from least to most expensive — with a cap of $3,000 for a weeklong stay. (And just in case you can’t quite carve out a full week away, the nightly rates are listed, as well.) Read on to find out where to get the most bang for your buck.

Ojo_Caliente_Sante_Fe_New_Mexico.png

OJO CALIENTE MINERAL SPRINGS RESORT & SPA, OJO CALIENTE, NEW MEXICO

I found this hot springs spa years ago when a friend of mine, living in Taos at the time, insisted I visit. We spent the afternoon (a day pass is $16) lounging in mineral pools containing arsenic (good for skin conditions and arthritis) and lithium (aids digestion and eases depression), sipping spring water, and spreading mud on our bodies then drying in the sun. It was blissful. In addition to 10 mineral pools, the 1,100-acre property has a historic hotel, a restaurant, and a full-fl edged spa. (Massages begin at $80 for 50 minutes and must be booked in advance.)

PRICE: From $109 per night; seven-night stays from $783.

Glen_Ivy_Hot_Springs_Mineral_Baths.png

GLEN IVY HOT SPRINGS SPA, CORONA, CALIFORNIA

The Native Americans were the first to enjoy these sacred waters, followed by the Spaniards, and by the 1890s the place had mushroomed into a health haven. Today, guests book into local hotels (accommodations are not available on-site) and then head to Glen Ivy’s spa playground (day admission is $35 on weekdays, $48 on weekends). A selection of soak-supplementing options are available: the legendary Glen Ivy Club Mud, where you can cover yourself in red clay (great for drawing impurities out of the pores and tightening the skin); a grotto for slathering on a hydrating body masque ($25); a wide variety of massages and facials (from $125); and a café serving tasty, healthy dishes made with local ingredients.

PRICE: Area hotels from $124 per night; packages that include seven days admission to Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa and seven nights accommodations from $892.

Kripalu_KRIPALU_CENTER__STOCKBRIDGE__MASSACHUSETTS.png

KRIPALU CENTER, STOCKBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS

When it comes to yoga, there are few, if any, retreat centers in the U.S. that can boast more offerings and renowned instructors than the Kripalu Center. (Each year, Kripalu’s 700 yogacentric programs attract more than 28,000 participants.) Its location — 150 wooded acres with a private lake and miles of trails — provides the ultimate setting for peaceful walks and meditative contemplation between yoga sessions, which are held three times a day: early morning, midday, and late afternoon. In between, there’s hiking and canoeing as well as workshops on topics like nutrition and creative writing. Ayurveda, India’s ancient science of holistic medicine, is practiced here and incorporated into everything from daily rituals (awaken before sunrise and give thanks before bed, for example) to therapeutic treatments like massage, nasal cleansing, and herbal detoxification sessions (spa treatments from $35).

PRICE: Dormitory accommodations from $155 per night (twonight minimum); seven-night stays from $1,106.

THE OAKS AT OJAI, OJAI, CALIFORNIA

Founded by legendary fitness buff Sheila Cluff, who still personally leads some of the activities and classes, The Oaks at Ojai celebrated its 30th birthday in 2007. Not surprisingly, there’s a cornucopia of get-in-shape classes, from aqua aerobics to core conditioning with hula hoops to belly dancing. New mission-style spa suites featuring hand-carved headboards and spacious jet tubs in the bathrooms add a feeling of luxury, and select spa treatments benefit from local ingredients, such as the Ojai Olive Oil Body Souffl é ($125, 75 minutes) that uses oil pressed from olives gathered in nearby groves. But it’s the 1,000-calorie-a-day spa cuisine that attracts the majority of guests — many who come with a holy grail weight-loss spa focus. Hikes and walks are popular, too — not to mention gorgeous — amid flowering citrus trees, lavender, and aloe.

PRICE: From $185 per night; seven-night stays from $1,295.

NEW AGE HEALTH SPA, NEVERSINK, NEW YORK

Just two hours from Manhattan in the Catskill Mountains, New Age Health Spa sits on 280 wooded acres combining lovely nature trails with spiritual, New Agey offerings like tarot card readings and a plethora of yoga, tai chi, and meditation classes. Native American rituals are the highlight of the spa menu: Try the Native Sun Purification ($95, 50 minutes), a spa hair treatment using traditional herbs grown in the spa’s greenhouse, or the complimentary Sweat Lodge Ceremony that is offered from April to November on the Saturday evening closest to the full moon.

PRICE: From $209 per night (two-night minimum); sevennight stays from $1,589.

PRICE: From $130 per night; six-night Detox Program from $1,699.

COPPERHOOD INN & SPA, SHANDAKEN, NEW YORK

This intimate destination spa — just 17 rooms — offers an old-Europe feel. Think gilded frames, marble, and wingback chairs. Hiking is the big draw, particularly in autumn’s glorious foliage, but yoga, meditation, and spa treatments (from $60) are popular, as well. Rooms are cozy, and afternoon tea is served daily in front of a fireplace — or on a wraparound deck with Adirondack chairs during the warmer months. The cuisine excludes red meat and instead features local ingredients like free-range chicken, cheese, and seasonal produce.

PRICE: From $325 per night (two-night minimum); seven-night stays from $2,240.

Calidora Skin Clinics, the medically based anti-aging skin care gurus, recently opened three new skin care clinics in the Los Angeles area, where you can take advantage of advanced and proven technologies to obtain healthier and younger-looking skin.

For those readers looking for a more results-driven approach to treating wrinkles than your typical facial, the clinics are hosting two special “Evening of Injectables” events featuring Supervising Physician Dr. Michael Zarrabi. You’re invited to stop in to learn more about these advanced methods for turning back the clock. If you like what you hear, make an appointment and take advantage of one of Calidora’s special discount offers on Botox or Juvederm.

At this event, guests will enjoy:
* A live Botox/Juvederm demonstration with Dr. Zarrabi.
* An educational talk about Injectables.
* Special introductory offers on Botox® Cosmetic and Juvederm, including Botox® pricing of $10 per unit and buy one syringe of Juvederm and get a second syringe 50 percent off.
* Free Photo-Imaging Complexion Analysis, including a consultation with a skin care professional, a printout of your photo imaging skin analysis and a customized Calidora Skinplan.

This event will take place at the following locations and times:
Calidora at Americana at Brand: August 14, 5 to 8PM
Calidora at The Waterside: August 21, 4 to 7PM
