Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club Spa Experience Review

May 13th, 2009

The lowdown: Willow Stream Spa — which boasts a Mobil four-star spa award — is clearly designed to be grand. A domed skylight floods the 25,000-square-foot, tri-level facility with natural light, and a bubbling fountain anchors the space, providing a subtle, soothing background sound that’s audible everywhere except the treatment rooms, where guests select their own soundtrack.

Guests make many choices at Willow Stream, where the motto is ”find your energy.” Grounded in the concept of self-directed wellness, spagoers might be asked to select the scent for their massage or a tarot card that might provide a clue to the body’s subconscious needs. But don’t worry — it’s not all up to you. The toughest task is choosing from a broad range of treatments that include seasonal, international, sports-inspired and water-based experiences, most of which can be customized. Once that selection has been made, the staff makes every effort to provide an effortless experience.

The ‘hood: Just minutes from busy Biscayne Boulevard and the Aventura Mall, the 300-acre Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club is a quiet, meticulously landscaped oasis that feels removed from the city. Valet parking is complimentary for spa guests.

The vibe: If walls could talk, these would ask how they could serve you. From the attentiveness of the always-nearby staff to the thoughtful design of the treatment rooms and common areas (where everything from bath products to snacks is copiously and continuously replenished), the entire spa reflects a commitment to enhance the experience and pamper the guests.

The highlights: With packages like the Up To Par Body Experience for golfers (60 minutes, $159) and the Jet Lag Recovery (90 minutes, $209), Willow Stream has a treatment for everyone. Bound to be a hit with just about anyone, however, is the Royal Javanese Lulur (120 minutes, $299). Traditionally performed on brides-to-be from royal families in Indonesia, the ritual begins with an aromatic petal bath, transitions to a yogurt scrub that exfoliates and cleanses the body, and ends with a Balinese massage.

Though less exotic, the customized anti-aging (90 minutes, $239) and deep cleansing (60 minutes, $129) facials provide precise, targeted results. Willow Stream also offers a slew of companion treatments and salon services.

The sweet deal: Book any signature treatment (60 minutes or more, excluding salon) and then select a free express manicure, pedicure, facial or massage. Valid through May 22.

Agua Spa South Beach Miami FL Spa Review

April 16th, 2009

The lowdown: As if you needed another reason to visit the Mondrian in South Beach, Morgans Hotel Group throws in Agua Spa — because it can. The 4,000-square-foot space created by celebrity designer Marcel Wanders — meaning lots of white walls and accents, plus larger-than-life furniture — features six treatment rooms, a princess area for mani-pedis and locker rooms with steam showers and sauna.

From facials and massages to pedicures and makeup application, the menu can be overwhelming but is not necessarily overpriced. And, if you’re into exclusivity, Agua is the only spa in the United States that carries nontoxic nail polish line Butter London and Swedish skincare line sjal.

The ‘hood: On SoBe’s West Avenue, Agua has a neighborhood day spa feel, yet with the amenities of a swanky hotel. Park at the hourly-rate garage on 10th Street or valet at the hotel; spa clients get a discounted rate of $15.

The vibe: Surprisingly simple and relaxed. Uncharacteristic of a SoBe spa, expect to find simplicity, kind service and decent prices.

The highlights: The Milk and Honey body treatment (60 minutes, $140) sounds sticky, but this signature treatment is all sweetness complemented with a gentle massage. Suffering from northeast tourist syndrome? Try the Vitamin Infusion facial ($250, 60 minutes) that will blast you with enough sun protection and moisturizer plus six essential vitamins to keep your skin glowing. Make those toes beach-ready with the Ultimate Pedicure ($90, 75 minutes), which includes an antioxidant-infused soak, a color consultation and paraffin wax treatment. If after a night on the town you’re dreaming of an in-room massage, get the After Hours Aqua Massage ($240, 60 minutes) available until midnight. As an added bonus, a spa menu from hotel restaurant Asia de Cuba and poolside services are available.

The sweet deal: Mention this story and get 20 percent off any spa service until June 30.

Mount Dora Florida Inn & Spa New Services

March 5th, 2009

MOUNT DORA – The historic Lakeside Inn is providing its guests with many new services, including bridal-party accommodations, yoga, health-conscious meals, diet coaching and spa treatments such as massages, facials and makeup artistry.

Massage therapist and spa owner Donna Swain is expanding to the historic inn, offering services inside its Sunset Building on Lake Dora. These will be offered to inn guests through special packages. The inn at 100 N. Alexander St. often has five weddings taking place on the weekends, so many spa services will be tailored for a bride and her party.

“This will be perfect for a whole bridal party to get ready,” said inn manager Paula Briskin. “It can be an all-day prep for a wedding.”

Swain added, “We will have a fabulous makeup artist. It will be very feminine. The girls can get their makeup done together.”

In addition to housing the first-floor spa, the Sunset Building contains 10 guest rooms. A bridal party could take over the whole building, Briskin said.

“It could be a fun girls’ getaway if they all stay here,” Briskin said of the wood-frame building built in 1914.

The Sunset Building resembles the rest of the inn, with original buildings dating to 1883. The long-lasting structures make the inn one of the city’s treasured historic landmarks.

Briskin also stressed the new health-fitness offerings, and said these packages also may be popular for a non-wedding crowd.

Though men aren’t excluded from these services, Briskin said women in particular will be drawn to the power walks by the lake, yoga classes, diet coaching, and health-conscious meals featuring vegetarian, vegan or lowfat fare.

“Every morning on the package there will be a 3-mile walk,” Briskin said. “Then you come back and have a healthy breakfast — a vegetarian or healthy breakfast.”

Meals also can be served to guests on the veranda.

Yoga, massage therapy

Briskin, a yoga teacher, said classes will suit the guests’ needs.

“I do a real hard-flow class where you work up a good sweat when the class is done, but that’s not for someone with back problems. The beauty of yoga is you take it at your own pace,” she said.

Massages will be part of these packages as well. Many of Swain’s massages — the Himalayan, for example — also utilize elements such as aromatherapy, hot stones and sea salt.

“I just had one,” Swain said. “I really wasn’t expecting much, but you leave feeling so grounded and balanced, and it soothes your nervous system.”

The spa services will be available by the middle of this month within a 750-square-foot space, which Swain had redone in pastel green and yellow tones. She calls the color scheme “essence of aloe and lemon green.”

Diet, nutrition coaching

For those on a health-and-fitness retreat, professional diet and nutrition coaching is offered, along with discussions on deep breathing and keeping a healthy mental state.

“It’s all about exercise, eating right and having a good mental state,” Briskin said. “Persons should ask themselves, ‘Do I know how to deep breathe?’ ”

Swain also owns Essential Therapies, a full-service spa she has owned for six years. She has worked as a massage therapist in Mount Dora for 12 years.

Briskin has been in the resort-spa business 25 years and took over as manager at Lakeside Inn when the former manager, John Bristol, died last year.

With the slumping economy so difficult for many Central Floridians, a Mount Dora retreat could be a better option than an overseas vacation, Briskin said.

“This is better compared to a trip to Europe — a long, expensive plane trip,” Briskin said.

Swain said the wedding packages will be popular despite the economic downturn because women will always want to get married in a pleasant manner.

“People will get married no matter what the economy is like,” Swain said.

Naples Grande Beach Resort Joins Waldorf Astoria Collection

February 17th, 2009

naples-grande-resort-and-go

Hilton Hotels Corporation announces that the Naples Grande Beach Resort in Naples, Florida, has joined the Waldorf Astoria, continuing the luxury brand’s expansion into key leisure markets worldwide.

Situated among lush palms and balmy sea breezes in Naples, Florida’s exclusive Southwest city, along the Gulf of Mexico’s Paradise Coast, the Naples Grande Beach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection is surrounded by 200 acres of Nature Preserve. Designed to coexist with its surrounding environment of clear water, unspoiled mangrove-lined beaches and lush green flora, the resort completed a multimillion-dollar renovation in 2007, unveiling an elaborate redesign indicative of the destination’s changing face and solidifying its status as one of Florida’s premier resorts.

Following in the footsteps of recent Florida additions to the portfolio the Casa Marina Resort & Beach Club, Waldorf Astoria Collection and The Reach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection, in Key West, Florida, the Naples Grande Beach Resort is the 11th hotel to join the prestigious Waldorf Astoria Collection, as the portfolio continues to expand into key indigenous destinations.

Featuring an 18-story tower with 395 luxuriously appointed guestrooms and 29 tower suites, the Naples Grande Beach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection combines comfortable elegance with the active lifestyle evocative of Naples’ stunning setting. The resort offers an array of outdoor activities to acclimatize guests to the dazzling Florida scenery – from its Tennis Center with Har-Tru courts offering professional services managed by Peter Burwash International, to the exclusive championship golf course at Naples Grande Golf Club and including beachfront sailing, windsurfing and aqua cycling along three miles of Gulf of Mexico white sugar-sand beach.

Inside the resort all refurbished guest rooms feature a luxurious take on Floridian style while exuding the casual, comfortable elegance which has become the resort’s signature. Custom designed furniture, hand-selected fabrics and luxurious touches such as silky window treatments, plush carpeting and sumptuous bedding enrich each guestroom and suite, while oversized closets, expansive bathrooms with five fixture arrangements and separate oversized tub/glass enclosed shower combinations provide the ultimate retreat.

The 50 self-contained Bungalows, adjacent to the main resort have been completely refurbished by Bob Barry and feature design elements of relaxed gray, beige and green and Asian-inspired clean, simple lines for an exclusive, private space for guests’ relaxation. Elsewhere, the Naples Grande Beach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection offers three swimming pools and private cabanas with butler service, providing ultimate luxury and relaxation. For those guests seeking an extra level of luxury, the resort’s Golden Door Spa – the first of its kind on the U.S. east coast – features elements of traditional Japanese architecture, serene gardens, relaxation pool, individual mp3 players and a meditation labyrinth, providing an awe-inspiring yet calming environment to unwind and relax.

Ross Klein, Global Head Luxury & Lifestyle Brands, Hilton Hotels Corporation, said: “Following in the footsteps of our most recent Florida additions to the portfolio, we are delighted to welcome the Naples Grande Beach Resort to the Waldorf Astoria Collection. This resort provides the perfect balance of stunning local scenery, and indigenous local experiences and intuitive, luxurious comfort, and the renovations have given a fresh face to an already popular destination.”

The renovations also included the addition of a Strip House steak restaurant, a signature dining experience first introduced in Manhattan and featuring sumptuous silk furnishings and vintage Studio Manasse images. The Strip House offers an eclectic and design-rich fine dining space, designed by celebrated interior architect David Rockwell and featuring cuisine from acclaimed chef John Schenk. Also included in the renovations were a full redesign of the lobby and lounge space and updated meeting space – unveiling a banquet facility, the pool-facing Vista Ballroom which boasts floor to ceiling windows. With 2 further ballrooms, as well as an additional 27 meeting and breakout rooms, the Naples Grande Beach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection offers 80,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor space, an accommodating base for all occasions, from bar mitzvahs to board meetings.

In addition to the Naples Grande Beach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection, the Waldorf Astoria Collection also operates ten other properties – seven in the United States, comprising the inspiration for the brand, the legendary Waldorf Astoria® in New York; Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona; Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa in Maui, Hawaii, La Quinta Resort & Club in Southern California, as well as the Casa Marina Resort & Beach Club, Waldorf Astoria Collection and The Reach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection, both in the Florida Keys. Internationally it operates the 46-suite Qasr Al Sharq or “Palace of the Orient” in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Rome Cavalieri, and most recently the Trianon Palace in Versailles which joined the collection in December 08.

The company is also developing Waldorf Astoria Collection hotels and residences in key cities around the world and this year expects to launch the Waldorf Astoria Orlando in Florida, Dakota Mountain Lodge in Park City (Utah) and the Bentley Waldorf Astoria Collection in London. The Palace Jerusalem, Israel, the Waldorf Astoria Sarasota in Florida and the proposed the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills in California are also scheduled to open in 2010.

Willow Stream Spa Aventura FL BFF Package

Spa Scene | B.F.F. Spa Night at Willow Stream

The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club

Lowdown: It was less than a year ago that Turberry opened its spa to non-hotel guests, so you can easily book a regular Shiatsu massage, $139 for 60 minutes.

But you might have more fun collecting your best friends for B.F.F. Spa Night, held on the last Wednesday of every month.

In this case, B.F.F. stands for backrubs, facial and foot scrubs. Entry is $45, which includes all the services you can undergo during the 7-9 p.m. window, appetizers, wine and other beverages, and a parting gift. Valet parking is free with validation and tax and tips are included.

Understandable, the event — with its limit of 60 attendees — has sold out since it began three months ago.

”I wanted to do something I’d want to bring my friends to,” said Rachel Pinzur, who directs public relations for the hotel and conceived the idea.
At the last B.F.F. event, there were also tarot readings, lessons in poker, makeup application, crab-cucumber bites and mango proscuitto.
One happy attendee, Rosary Falero, said she’d sampled, well, “everything.”
”I’m going for seconds,” she said.

Neighborhood: In the Aventura hub, Turnberry is around the corner from the mall. Valet service is efficient.

Vibe: Powder blue walls, soft music and stronger lighting than most hotel spas.

Highlights: Guests sitting in the regal pedicure chairs who were having their feet and hands simultaneously scrubbed didn’t look unhappy. There was a good 15 minute wait at this station, but plenty of others had no wait at all. In all, there were six massage chairs, four facialists and four nail specialists, though manicures and pedicures are not among the offerings.

You can also buy a B.F.F. package that includes a relaxation massage (30 minutes), deep cleansing facial (60 minutes), pedicure with a foot scrub (45 minutes) and glass of champagne. This also entitles you to use resort’s fitness center, steam rooms and relaxation lounges. Total cost is $199, tax and tips extra.

Spas get specialized
Whether you’re seeking a healthy adventure or a pampered retreat, we’ve found the perfect spa for you.

We don’t have to tell you: Modern life can stress you out. And we all know what stress can do to our bodies. That’s why so many of us are flocking to spas to chill out. There are more than 32 million regular spa-goers in the United States alone. In 2006, the estimated 14,615 spas generated more than $9 billion in revenues. That’s big business.

And like all good businesses, the spa industry is constantly reinventing itself. Spas are now being marketed as a healthy necessity rather than an indulgence. Thanks to a sagging economy, many spas are also cutting rates and offering hard-to-resist package deals. If you’re overdue for some revitalization, Read more…

Golf Spas – Benefits of Golf – Golf Spa Getaways

August 20th, 2008

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

Why Play Golf?

Golf is one of the most widespread, popular sports in the world. Easy to begin, yet always challenging, it has a lot to offer everyone of any age, degree of fitness and level of skill. If you have never tried the game and wonder why it attracts so many others, consider some of the benefits it offers you and your community.

A drive through most colonized regions of the developed world will testify to the popularity of the sport of golf. Vast tracts of prime parkland in urban, suburban and rural communities are dedicated and meticulously maintained as fairways, greens and clubhouses. Devotees to the links will work their careers, domestic responsibilities and social life around their tee times. Weather will not daunt them and they will take advantage of every hour of daylight to fit in another round.

If you’ve never tried golf, this obsession may seem a bit baffling. Not everyone sees the attraction. Mark Twain, for one, defined golf as “a good walk spoiled.” Another has quipped: “Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle.” So what is it about golf that continues to entice players? The many facets of the game of golf combine to offer you a wide range of physical, mental, emotional and social benefits.
Physical Fitness
The average walking circuit for a round of golf is about four miles, or six kilometres, which is an ideal distance done weekly to maintain relatively good physical fitness. If you walk briskly, you will increase your cardio-vascular and lung capacity. Normally, a person’s heart rate while playing golf does not elevate above 120 beats per minute, so the exercise does not qualify as a “cardio” or aerobic workout, but it is perfect for steadily burning fat.
If you pull your clubs or carry them, you’ll burn even more calories each round. A round of golf burns about 300 calories in a 150 pound individual who plays for 1 hour while carrying clubs. If you choose to ride in a cart, the same round of golf will burn 230 calories. The driving range burns about 200 calories per hour. Furthermore, swinging the club conditions your upper body and back while bending down to handle the ball helps keep all your joints and muscles supple.
The fact that golf involves hours outside is another benefit. Found in UVA rays, Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, regulating the amount of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. It also helps regulate the growth of skin cells. While you can eat some foods that are high in Vitamin D, your body can actually produce its own Vitamin D through exposure to sunlight. What more enjoyable way to do that than an afternoon on the course? Don’t forget to use sunscreen with the right UV protection.

Mental Acuity
Golf offers a challenge to your mind. You are always thinking when you play golf, whether it’s counting shots, working out your score or calculating yardages and club selection. Strategy, decision making, visualization and intense concentration are natural aspects of the play and the cerebral exercise will benefit your mental performance even off the course.
Skill Development
Golf develops our complex motor skills and dexterity. Since the game is based on finesse rather than brute force, it hones our control, muscle memory, balance and hand-eye coordination.

Stress Relief
There’s a fine line here. Scenes of golfers throwing or breaking their clubs after a flubbed shot are standard comedy fare. Obsessed competitors can send their blood pressure soaring in the quest for perfection on the course. Like any sport, golf can be an excellent stress reliever or it can become a nemesis to peace of mind; it all depends on your reason for playing.
By nature, though, golf is suited for stress relief. A quiet stroll in the open air with friends, unhurried play, mild exercise and the reward of a shot well placed goes a long way to dissipate the irritations of the work-a-day world at the office. Studies have shown that golf can trigger the release of powerful, natural, mood enhancing endorphins and hormones such as serotonin into the bloodstream. Their calming euphoric effect lasts for hours after the game.

Social Interaction
Golf is a social game; a chance to get to know your golf partners better. The etiquette and rules of golf encourage care and respect of others and the course. A round of golf can take up to four hours where individual differences disappear as playing the game becomes the common focus. Most often golf is played in pairs or foursomes, and even if you have come to the course alone, it is common to be invited to join others you have never met before.
One reason golfing creates a sense of social harmony is that it is a great equalizer; the handicapping system of golf is designed to enable the beginner to play competitively against the highly skilled. There are not many sports where you can compete fairly against the superstar.
Interaction on the course is usually marked by the telling of jokes, sharing stories, conducting business and simply getting to know one another. All of this is conducted in a non-threatening environment of friendly competition.

Appreciation of Nature
One of the best things about playing golf is you have the opportunity to walk on some beautiful courses, enjoying the scenery and fresh air. Manicured grass, lush trees, water features, birds and even small animals contribute to the pastoral atmosphere. In many urban settings, the only green space found for miles are the golf courses and they are often paired with parkland and recreational trails, so even those who do not venture onto to course still benefit from the grounds.
Community Service
Increasingly, golf is making a wider contribution to the community. Golf and country clubs host many tournaments in support of charities. This not only raises thousands of dollars to meet community needs but is also raises awareness of important issues and worthy causes. No matter what your age, degree of fitness or skill level, it is hard to beat golf as an excellent way to spend leisure time. If you have never tried it, you owe it to yourself to give it a go.
