Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club Spa Experience Review

May 13th, 2009

The lowdown: Willow Stream Spa — which boasts a Mobil four-star spa award — is clearly designed to be grand. A domed skylight floods the 25,000-square-foot, tri-level facility with natural light, and a bubbling fountain anchors the space, providing a subtle, soothing background sound that’s audible everywhere except the treatment rooms, where guests select their own soundtrack.

Guests make many choices at Willow Stream, where the motto is ”find your energy.” Grounded in the concept of self-directed wellness, spagoers might be asked to select the scent for their massage or a tarot card that might provide a clue to the body’s subconscious needs. But don’t worry — it’s not all up to you. The toughest task is choosing from a broad range of treatments that include seasonal, international, sports-inspired and water-based experiences, most of which can be customized. Once that selection has been made, the staff makes every effort to provide an effortless experience.

The ‘hood: Just minutes from busy Biscayne Boulevard and the Aventura Mall, the 300-acre Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club is a quiet, meticulously landscaped oasis that feels removed from the city. Valet parking is complimentary for spa guests.

The vibe: If walls could talk, these would ask how they could serve you. From the attentiveness of the always-nearby staff to the thoughtful design of the treatment rooms and common areas (where everything from bath products to snacks is copiously and continuously replenished), the entire spa reflects a commitment to enhance the experience and pamper the guests.

The highlights: With packages like the Up To Par Body Experience for golfers (60 minutes, $159) and the Jet Lag Recovery (90 minutes, $209), Willow Stream has a treatment for everyone. Bound to be a hit with just about anyone, however, is the Royal Javanese Lulur (120 minutes, $299). Traditionally performed on brides-to-be from royal families in Indonesia, the ritual begins with an aromatic petal bath, transitions to a yogurt scrub that exfoliates and cleanses the body, and ends with a Balinese massage.

Though less exotic, the customized anti-aging (90 minutes, $239) and deep cleansing (60 minutes, $129) facials provide precise, targeted results. Willow Stream also offers a slew of companion treatments and salon services.

The sweet deal: Book any signature treatment (60 minutes or more, excluding salon) and then select a free express manicure, pedicure, facial or massage. Valid through May 22.

Agua Spa South Beach Miami FL Spa Review

April 16th, 2009

The lowdown: As if you needed another reason to visit the Mondrian in South Beach, Morgans Hotel Group throws in Agua Spa — because it can. The 4,000-square-foot space created by celebrity designer Marcel Wanders — meaning lots of white walls and accents, plus larger-than-life furniture — features six treatment rooms, a princess area for mani-pedis and locker rooms with steam showers and sauna.

From facials and massages to pedicures and makeup application, the menu can be overwhelming but is not necessarily overpriced. And, if you’re into exclusivity, Agua is the only spa in the United States that carries nontoxic nail polish line Butter London and Swedish skincare line sjal.

The ‘hood: On SoBe’s West Avenue, Agua has a neighborhood day spa feel, yet with the amenities of a swanky hotel. Park at the hourly-rate garage on 10th Street or valet at the hotel; spa clients get a discounted rate of $15.

The vibe: Surprisingly simple and relaxed. Uncharacteristic of a SoBe spa, expect to find simplicity, kind service and decent prices.

The highlights: The Milk and Honey body treatment (60 minutes, $140) sounds sticky, but this signature treatment is all sweetness complemented with a gentle massage. Suffering from northeast tourist syndrome? Try the Vitamin Infusion facial ($250, 60 minutes) that will blast you with enough sun protection and moisturizer plus six essential vitamins to keep your skin glowing. Make those toes beach-ready with the Ultimate Pedicure ($90, 75 minutes), which includes an antioxidant-infused soak, a color consultation and paraffin wax treatment. If after a night on the town you’re dreaming of an in-room massage, get the After Hours Aqua Massage ($240, 60 minutes) available until midnight. As an added bonus, a spa menu from hotel restaurant Asia de Cuba and poolside services are available.

The sweet deal: Mention this story and get 20 percent off any spa service until June 30.

Spa 101 at the Hilton Bentley Hotel South Beach Florida Spa

March 20th, 2009

Spa review | Spa 101 at the Hilton Bentley Hotel

101 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach, FL, 33139-7212

786-879-5433.

The lowdown: Most folks flock to Bali to get away from it all. Not Spa 101 owners Iris and Patrick Van de Coevering. The married couple moved from Bali to Miami two years ago and recently opened Spa 101 on South Beach. ”I wanted to bring Miami the essence of the Asian spa experience that I was fortunate enough to discover during my time operating a spa in Bali,” Iris says.

The hood: Located on the fourth floor of the Hilton Bentley Hotel, Spa 101 is situated on the tip of South Beach. The friendly facility and its surrounding outdoor lounge areas overlook the ocean and stretches of sand.

The vibe: Think Miami-meets-Bali. The homey retreat is outfitted with contemporary furniture mixed with Asian accents. ”I kept the ambience down to earth and unpretentious — I want visitors to feel welcomed,” Iris says. Inside, the spa houses two intimate treatment rooms and outside has roomy chairs, cabana and Jacuzzi perfect for unwinding.

The highlights: Using Hungary’s all-natural Eminence Skin Care for services, each treatment is garnished with fruity and fragrant concoctions. The spa menu is kept plain and simple with services ranging from $25 for a hand spa — manicure and scrub with massage — to $100 for a facelift massage using lymphatic drainage and microcurrent technologies to clean and tighten skin. Iris adds, ”Massage is at the root of every treatment, just like in Bali.” Ah, take us away.

Special for Miami Herald readers: Mention this article while booking any massage during March and get a complimentary 15-minute facelift facial.

The notion of a quick spa treatment may sound contradictory — after all, doesn’t rushing the experience defeat the purpose? When your schedule doesn’t permit the luxury of an entire afternoon — or even a whole hour — the expanding array of express treatments promises rewarding results in 30 minutes or less. Read more…

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Miami

November 1st, 2007

Awakening journeys combine treatments from all over the world at a deluxe spa on Miami’s waterfront

Fifteen thousand square feet of luxury, offering restorative treatments based upon the ancient traditions of Chinese, Ayurvedic, European, Balinese and Thai cultures. The spa is renowned for the Kundalini Journey, an innovative treatment exclusive to Mandarin Oriental, Miami; it combines stone therapy, advanced massage techniques and aromatherapy, to achieve a greater level of physical and mental relaxation.

The spacious room was candle lit with dim blue surround lighting and had steps that led up to a bath area. Fuchsia Orchid petals adorned the floor and soft Tibetan music filled the atmosphere.

Located on the island of Brickell Key, the spa has 17 private treatment rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the ocean. Its design embraces Asian culture with stylish touches including bamboo flooring, calming water features, granite tiles, mixed pebbles and untreated exotic woods. The steam room soothes with its infusion of scented energizing oils, while the subtle lighting throughout the spa provides an overwhelming sense of serenity.

EXPERIENCE The term Kundalini comes from Yogic philosophy and refers to energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine. This treatment is designed to help awaken the Kundalini and allow energy to flow through the entire body.

Before my treatment began, the therapist showed me a plate of semi-precious stones and asked me to pick three according to what most appealed to my senses. Using a blend of aromatic Frangipani, Jasmine and Mandarin essential oils she continued with a soothing, medium-pressured massageThis was followed by light stretching of the muscles and a combination of Thai and Shiatsu massage.

Soft Asian tunes were played to assist in relaxing my mind, body and spirit. Towards the end of the treatment the music was brought to life when the therapist gently sounded a Tibetan bowl and hovered it over my body.

She then went on to explain the meaning of the stones I had picked at the beginning of the treatment. I chose a quartz crystal, a carnelian and a citrine. The quartz crystal represented a need to let go and know everything will be taken care of; the Carnelian reflected openness to new things and creativity, and the Citrine, my knowledge of self worth. Overall, she said I was very well balanced.

At the end of every Kundalini Journey the client is presented with a gift. I was given an onyx necklace to help me stay balanced and to remind me of my awakening moment.

Regular celebrity guests include, Will and Jada Smith, Michael Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Penelope Cruz and Prince.

WALLET WATCH The Kundalini Journey lasts two hours and costs $340. Other Journeys start from $290. Private and couples suites can be booked, starting from $190.
