Spa Detox Treatments Detroit Day Spa

May 5th, 2009

In several ways, De’Spa Elite in downtown Detroit is like any other spa, with offerings that include Swedish massages, facials and manicures.

Then again, it’s not.

Owner Carolyn Hopkins says its alternative therapies make the spa “unique in the way that it focuses with people to detoxify” their bodies. Such treatments include Tong Ren, which seeks to unblock interruptions to what’s believed to be the body’s flow of energy, and Raindrop Therapy, a massage of medicinal oils.

These methods may sound unorthodox, but practitioners say they have desirable effects.

Linda Kent, who does Tong Ren ($75 for 50 minutes) by pounding a magnetic hammer against a rubber doll at specific points while her clients sit or lie down and relax, says “energy medicine is the new medicine for this century.” The tapping supposedly transfers energy to her clients to help alleviate ailments like allergies.

Denise Purdy practices Raindrop Therapy ($75 for 50 minutes), which focuses on the feet and the spine and uses extracts from plants and herbs like cypress, wintergreen and marjoram.

Another therapy, foot detoxification ($45 per half-hour session), allegedly draws toxins out from the body through the feet.

Dr. Michael Seidman, medical director of wellness at the Henry Ford Health System, says the value of these alternative therapies is debatable.

“When you ask me, ‘Does it sound crazy?’ My answer is ‘Yes,’ ” says Seidman. “But my response is also that it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s wrong just because we don’t understand it.”

Seidman adds that there could be a psychosomatic element, that “if you believe that you’re going to feel better and reduce your stress, then you probably will.”

Tracey Stevenson, 42, of Redford Township, recently visited the spa and soaked a foot in a tub of water infused with sea salt.

A flipped switch started an ionic charge that sent prickles through the water and tingles through Stevenson’s foot. As her foot soaked, the water turned from a hazy clear to a dusty orange to an inky, bubbly black.

The program, called Aqua-Chi, supposedly draws out toxins and material from the dermal layer of the skin. Changes in water colors are supposed to indicate the detoxification of different parts of the body, such as orange for the joints and black for the liver.

Stevenson says she wasn’t skeptical about the treatment, “just intrigued. I’ve spent time and money on the outside” of my body. “With this, I spend money on the inside.”

Glory Spa Flint Michigan

New in Town: Glory Spa in Flint donates part of proceeds to Next Level International Women’s Transitional Program

Camille Louie, a certified massage therapist and licensed esthetician, opened up Glory Spa in downtown Flint. Half the proceeds going to help troubled women. FLINT, Michigan — Glory Spa is not your typical spa.

Sure the spa located at 725 Stevens St., Flint, has massages, facials and all of the normal amenities. The difference? Half of the proceeds from the spa go to Next Level International Women’s Transitional Program, which is located in the same building as the spa, said owner Camille Louie.

The program houses 22 disadvantaged women who have fallen on hard times. The women reside in the facility for up to two years where they can work on their G.E.D’s or participate in programs that teach personal finances.

“That’s very helpful,” said Louie, who used to be the director of the program. “(Services) are needed for ladies (who live in the house), such as when we brought in a fashion designer to show them how to decorate their house.”

Massages, facials, bikini waxes, and eye lash extensions are all $33 each. Anyone can use the spa, Louie said. Louie, the only employee at the spa, is a certified massage therapist.

Louie said these services aren’t just extravagances.

“It is very helpful — internally, mentally, physically,” she said. “Massages are a stress reliever.”

The services also are available for those women in the program.

The women receive two free treatments per month.

Louie said it helps the women get through self-image problems.

“It’s all about her confidence,” Louie said. “She has to believe she is that she is beautiful, and (receiving the spa treatments) will help.”

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Michigan Day Spa Body Wraps for Toning and Weight Loss

November 4th, 2008

It’s a wrap: Salons offer clients cocoon-like body treatments

The body wrap is touted for toning skin, enhancing the effectiveness of the body’s circulatory and lymph node systems, breaking down toxins and – for those who eat well and maintain a healthy lifestyle – trimming inches off the body.

At $75 to $120 a pop, a body wrap may seem like quite a splurge.
But for Jennifer J. Christensen, 33, of Essexville, the benefits were worth the cost.
Christensen had four body wraps in one month earlier this year.

“It was April, right before my sister’s wedding,” Christensen explained.

The wraps, she said, helped her tone up, especially her stomach area, after giving birth to a daughter.

Beyond the toning benefits, Christensen said the experience itself was pleasant.
“Actually … having two kids, it was a relaxing time,” she said.

That’s the intent, according to the staff at 360º Salon & Day Spa in Essexville, where clients can purchase the M’lis Body Wrap service for $80.

The body wrap is touted for Read more…

Grande Med Spa takes medical approach to skin/body treatments
Luxurious surroundings create a relaxing, rejuvenating experience for clients at Grande Med Spa in Grand Blanc.  “We begin where day spas end.”

Grande Med Spa’s unique approach to cosmetic rejuvenation takes a more serious approach to a person’s overall well-being, with treatments and procedures designed to enhance the appearance of one’s face and body.

“Our approach is wellness and self-confidence,” said spa director/manager Amy Meriwether. “Our clients talk about how great their skin looks and feels and how much they enjoy their experience.”

Taking their clients on a wellness journey beyond what they will find at a traditional day spa, the professional staff at Grande Med Spa offers classes and seminars on a wide range of skin treatments available.

Clients come to Grande Med Spa for a variety of services — from facials and cellulite treatments — to deep tissue massage therapy, plus nutritional analysis/supplementation, anti-aging treatments, laser treatments for hair reduction, and more.

“We have a highly trained staff that can assist clients in a luxurious atmosphere, where they can truly benefit from our personalized attention,” said Meriwether. “All of our facials and massages are medical-grade treatments.”

Many of the services work from “the inside out,” offering education about a person’s skin and how best to take care of it with lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, sun protection, etc. A specialized line of skin care products is also available.

Nutritional analysis and anti-aging treatment have become very important issues to many clients, who appreciate the support from the spa in improving the quality of their lives.

A comprehensive menu of services treat a variety of skin/body conditions. “Each client works with an individual member of our staff to find the best combination of services to meet his or her goals,” said Meriwether.

Spa hours are Mon.-Sat., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays or by individual appointment.

They’ve got you covered from head to toe.

Connie Kraska and her daughter, Colleen Kraska, have opened a unique combination business at the Sommer Breeze Salon and Day Spa.

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

Connie’s enterprise is called Soak Away the Pounds, offering what she calls “the strongest foot-detox system available today.” It’s an ionic detoxification bath for the feet that she says results in weight loss, pain relief and increased energy.

Colleen, meanwhile, is a Hollywood-trained makeup artist who has opened a business called Makeup by Colleen K. She offers makeup services for pretty much any occasion: weddings, proms, photo shoots, Halloween and more.

“I have a marketing background, and I had done a lot of marketing for health products,” Connie Kraska said. “I was looking for something new that I might be able to get into, and then I discovered Soak Away the Pounds. I had gotten a bad infection from a cat bite, and I discovered the detox system. It was sort of unpolished at the time, but now it’s stronger and a lot more effective.”

She said the foot bath works by drawing out toxins, cellular waste and pollutants from the body. Connie Kraska said the Soak Away the Pounds method has grown in popularity after she was featured demonstrating it on Fox TV affiliates in Dallas, Indianapolis and Detroit.

“Everybody’s a little skeptical coming in, but at one place, they had four of the producers from the station soak their feet during the broadcast, to see what would happen,” she said. “They could actually see the water changing color as the toxins were drawn out of their body. It even got a little chunky.”

Connie Kraska charges $25 for a 45-minute session, and she said most customers come in every week or two.

“A lot of people come in because it’s effective at helping them lose weight, and some people come in because it helps with their arthritis and things like that,” she said.

As for Colleen Kraska’s makeup business, she said she decided to start Makeup by Colleen K after moving back to Michigan from California last year.

She received her training in both states and graduated from the elite Studio Makeup Academy in Hollywood, where she studied film, TV and studio makeup techniques. She also studied at Amy Ward’s Media Makeup School in Hollywood.

“We had lots of models and actors coming in,” Colleen Kraska said. “I ended up working on a lot of films out there — student films, short films, a little of everything.”

Since moving back to Michigan, she has continued her film career, working on some local productions. But most of her makeup work in these parts has been weddings, homecomings, proms and special occasions like that.

“Sometimes they’ll come here, but usually, I’ll meet them at their house or the wedding location or wherever they want, and I’ll do all their makeup there,” Colleen Kraska said.

She has also spent some time giving makeup tips to others, including a seminar she gave for the Livingston County Photography Group.

“That was fun,” Colleen Kraska said. “I basically showed them how to work with a model, to make their subject look as good as possible.”

She said that doing makeup for a living is something she’s dreamed about for a long time.

“I always did makeup, ever since I was a little girl,” she said. “I always thought that it would be cool to be able to wake up every morning and do somebody’s makeup that day.”
