Las Vegas Spa – Springtime Spa Treatment

March 20th, 2009

Looking to put a little spring back into your step? As if times weren’t hard enough, that hour everyone lost last weekend because of daylight saving time has truly taken its toll on all of us. So why not feel reborn again this spring with a trip to The Spa at New York-New York?

Earlier this week, I reviewed one of the more intimate spas on the Strip and one of its blissful treatments, the Escape Stress Body Escape. For those who are dying to go back (or who still haven’t been), The Spa at New York-New York just announced four new spring treatments available for a limited time, now through April 30. Each treatment includes a free cherry blossom-scented candle guests can take home with them to try and help them escape when they can’t make it back out to the spa. After all, we all need to tighten our purse strings a bit in this economy, right?

For those desperate to get rid of those kinks in their back (and we know you have them!), the Cherry Blossom Massage is just what the doctor ordered. Indulge in your own customized massage with combined elements of Swedish relaxation and therapeutic deep tissue. The refreshing scent of cherry blossoms will accentuate the treatment. The Cherry Blossom Massage is available as a 25-minute service for $70, a 50-minute service for $125 and a 75-minute service for $185.

Or, if you’d rather help rejuvenate your skin this spring, be sure to check out the Cherry Blossom Body Treatment. The 50-minute service ($110) includes a full-body exfoliation with a Cherry Blossom scrub that’s designed to leave your skin feeling soft and smooth, followed by an application of Cherry Blossom lotion for a refreshed, hydrated feeling.

Hydrotherapy Soak at The Spa at New York-New YorkThere’s also the 50-minute Cherry Blossom Soak & Glow ($85) which lets guests relax in a luxurious Cherry Blossom-scented bath while experiencing a mini-facial. Your skin will be ready to glow by the time this heavenly treatment comes to an end! Although I haven’t tried the treatment personally, this one sounds too good to pass up!

Finally, for those who are literally looking to put some spring back into their step, the 50-minute Cherry Blossom Pedicure ($80) lets you enjoy all the classic elements of a pedicure paired with a Cherry Blossom foot and leg exfoliation, followed by a foot and leg massage using a yummy-smelling Cherry Blossom lotion. It’s just what your tired tootsies will be aching for after a long day of walking up and down the Vegas Strip–not to mention the treatment gives you an excuse to check out The Spa at New York-New York’s beautiful manicure/pedicure room.

No matter which spring treatment you end up choosing, remember to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to enjoy The Spa at New York-New York’s private sauna and steam room. There is also a whirlpool in the men’s lounge and two private hydrotherapy soaks in the women’s lounge, which female guests can use even if they don’t book the Cherry Blossom Soak & Glow for an additional fee ($45 for 30 minutes).

The Spa at New York-New York is open daily from 6:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., with services beginning at 8 a.m. It is located on the third floor of the hotel near the Empire Elevator. Call 702-740-6955 for reservations or simply visit The Spa at New York-New York’s online reservation page.

Harmonie European Day Spa Saratoga California

March 17th, 2009

The Harmonie European Day Spa Experience

The health spa has been around since antiquity. Aroma and massage therapies were first practiced by the ancient Greeks for their healing benefits. Romans added esthetics to their treatments. Then, in the early 1800s, the spa was reintroduced into Europe.
“I had my first facial at 14,” says Patricia Bottero, a native Parisian and founder of Harmonie European Day Spa in Saratoga, CA. “A facial is simply something a young woman in France experiences.”

Bottero, a Los Gatos resident, was trained in the European tradition of skin and body care in Paris, and she continues to go to Europe to update her knowledge. As an esthetician, she first worked in California at a full-service salon, but in 1988, a couple of years later, she created Harmonie Skin and Body Care, now called Harmonie European Day Spa.

“The day spa experience is not about lazy pampering. The day spa is about the necessity we have to honor our femininity, especially at times when everything else and everyone else in our lives seems to be so much more important. Stress alone can make a woman feel unattractive, and if she feels unattractive, she will look that way,” says Bottero.

In an atmosphere influenced by French Loire castles, Harmonie clients are indulged by estheticians in dimly lit private rooms filled with soothing music and sensuous aromas. Estheticians trained by Bottero cater to clients personally, attending to their particular skin and body-care needs.

The spa provides facials, intensive treatments for acne, brown spots and wrinkles; full-body and other massages to promote relaxation and body detoxification; depilatories, thalassotherapy body envelopes–seawater and sea botanical body wraps–to firm, tone and detoxify skin; makeup application and lessons, manicure and pedicure.

One treatment consists of combining thermal seaweed mud with reflexology technique using Chinese acupressure points on hands and feet to relieve tension and essential oils for aromatherapy and to aid circulation.

“We want women to feel beautiful not just look beautiful. A large part of the power of beauty is how a woman feels when she is confident and self-assured,” says Bottero.

The spa offers special packages for expectant mothers, brides-to-be, busy executives and teens. Men’s treatments are also available.

Harmonie was voted Best Day Spa by both the Metro Silicon Valley Magazine and Elle Magazine.)

Harmonie European Day Spa is located at 14501 Big Basin Way, Saratoga, California. For more information call (408) 741-4997

Chicago IL Affordable Spa Services Spa Deals

February 2nd, 2009

Once upon a time, we paid people to cut, buff and paint our nails.

Once upon a time, we had people shape our unruly eyebrows and rub hot, smooth stones over our sore backs.

Once upon a time, we put time aside to have people rip hair off our legs with wax and wrap us in algae.

Those days, for many of us, are long gone.

Spas obviously want us back. And so, there are deals. Many end soon, so act fast if you’re yearning for pampering. Here are a few that caught our eye (framed, we admit, by slightly unruly brows):

212 Salon and Day Spa: 212’s “Quick Pick-Me-Up” is so tempting in the dead of winter, when our hair and nails are brittle and dull. For $100, you get a mani and pedi, protein conditioning treatment, shampoo and a blow-out.

Calla Lily:  Calla Lily, a spa that offers everything from seaweed body masks ($60) to Brazilian bikini waxes ($80 and up), will take 20 percent off any service through Saturday. Just print out the coupon on the Web site and book your indulgence.

Spa Space:  How about a 75-minute massage? Spa Space is offering its $150 Space Ritual Massage for $120. You need to buy a gift certificate for that massage specifically to get the discount (see the spa Web site for details).

urban-spa-chic-chicago-il

Urban Spa Chic:  Never been to Urban Spa Chic? If your nails are a mess, this might be the time to change that. The spa is offering a $10 mani with a seasonal spa pedi ($48) for first-time clients on Tuesdays through Thursdays.

New You Spa Escapes for the New Year

January 13th, 2009

Brought to you by Spavelous

One of the 12 relaxing treatment rooms at the Spa at the Four Seasons Hotel. Whew! The holidays are over—no more running around to parties, holiday event overload, last minute shopping or obligatory visits with family. Relaxation and rejuvenation are definitely the order of the month!

Finding a spa to soothe your weary mind, body and soul is easy, as there are literally thousands in the U.S. alone, offering everything from 30-minute to daylong treatments for women, men, couples and even teens.

From facials to manicures, waxing, mud baths, eucalyptus steams, body scrubs, seaweed wraps and hot rock massage therapy, there is something for everyone.

If you’ve already discovered the joy of “spa-ing,” you know what I’m talking about. For those who have never indulged….believe me, it is time and money well spent.

Here are just a few fantastic spots where you can recharge your inner batteries:

The wind in the Windy City can be brutal on your skin. However, at the Honey Child Salon & Spa you can dream and smell of the islands with a mango honey sugar scrub, or lemongrass and tangerine hand scrub and massage. Now through March the Honey Child is offering several winter specials, including a Shea butter moisture blast facial.

One of my favorite spas is located in the Ozark Mountain paradise of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The Palace Hotel and Bathhouse–North Arkansas’ only operating historic bathhouse—offers mineral baths in the original claw-foot tubs, eucalyptus steam treatments in wood barrel steam cabinets, Bentonite facial mask treatments, aromatherapy, facials and glycolic peels, among a wealth of other services.

Nestled in a stunning, three-story Antebellum-style home in the heart of Historic Elizabeth near downtown Charlotte, Oasis Day Spa is the city’s premiere boutique spa. Rejuvenating specialty pedicures and manicures, soothing and fun spa-day getaway packages and exquisite massage therapies are just the beginning of the experience here. Try their new pumpkin peel, designed to introduce vitamins and enzymes into the skin as well as exfoliate and withdraw any body impurities via the powerful antioxidant formula. Brow, leg and “Peruvian bikini” are among the waxing services.

Offering a wide array of massage therapies, body treatments, manicures, pedicures and other services, the Sonoran Spa in Tucson is a must! Located at the Westward Look Resort and using all-natural desert botanicals, the environment here is captivating from the ever-present aromatic aromas to the cozy treatment rooms, refreshing relaxation and tearooms and private pergola-sheltered outdoor patio. The pomegranate body scrub treatment including a full body massage with pomegranate body butter is absolutely yummy!

Voted “Best Day Spa,” “Best Color & Highlights” and “Best Manicures & Pedicures” by CitySearch, the Spa Roma Urban Dream Spa is a Milwaukee favorite. In addition to spa services for women, girlfriend’s parties and couples, the spa also offers a wide selection for the men in our lives, including sports massages, purifying back treatments and skin fit facials, just to name a few.

The Spa at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis is truly an urban oasis, offering pampering and wellness for every part of your body. The 12,000 square foot spa encompasses 12 luxuriously appointed treatment rooms, couples suites and several Jacuzzi tubs. For a jolt of java, try the exfoliating and detoxifying espresso mud body wrap with accompanying head and scalp massages, warm shower and hydrating crème massage. The Marrakech detox is one of the “Ritual” services.

Spa Days – Spacations How to Make the Most for the Least

SPA GETAWAYS INDEPTH

A great day spa experience requires more than just showing up. From getting the most for your money to navigating the rules of spa etiquette, find out how to get the most bliss with the least stress.

The average price of a spa treatment in the United States is $75, but it climbs well into the three-digit range in major cities. Make the most of your investment!

Time It Right
If you don’t work a regular 9-to-5 day, head to the spa early in the week. Some smaller ones offer discounts Monday through Wednesday (particularly before 3 p.m.). “The spa will also be quieter then, and you’ll get more individual attention,” says Alexis Ufland, who’s helped create spas like the Mezzanine Spa in New York City and Avia Spa in Santa Barbara.

Consider a Spa Package Deal
If you’re interested in getting more than one treatment, check out the package portion of the spa’s menu. “Spa packages aren’t these eight-hour ‘Queen for a Day’ things anymore,” says Ufland. “They’re usually just two or three services, and on average, you’ll get a 10 percent discount. You might also get a complimentary lunch or a free product.”

Find Something Special
“People call all the time to ask if we’re running any specials,” says Marilyn Jaeger, owner of Marilyn Jaeger Skincare Studio in San Francisco. “Most spas do a couple of promotions a year, and you can get a great break on certain services.” Recently, for example, Jaeger was offering microdermabrasion treatments at $75 instead of $150. The website spavelous.com offers deals on services at spas across the country; just search by state and find specials on everything from massage to waxing.

Look for Bells and Whistles
“Ask questions when you book a service, to find out what else is included,” says Cornelia Zicu, owner of Cornelia Day Resort in New York City. “Will you get a hand and foot massage with your facial? A scalp massage with your wrap?” At Cornelia, a body wrap includes pretreatment hydrotherapy (translation: a really fancy, candlelit, Calgon-commercial bath), and during all facials, a second aesthetician massages your hands and feet.

Keep Order
The spa should book your spa appointments in the most logical sequence. In case they don’t, a quick primer, scrubs and wraps should come after massages, and facials after (do you want to stick your face in that massage table doughnut thing after a facial?). Manicures and pedicures should always be last, to avoid smudging.

Take Advantage of the Facilities
Even if you’re getting only one treatment, you can often spend an afternoon at the spa if it has a sauna, steam room, or hot tub.

Arrive Promptly
Show up 20 minutes early, and you can enjoy the steam room before your treatment (a great way to warm up your muscles before a massage, by the way). Show up 20 minutes late, and you may end up getting a 40-minute service for the price of an hour.

Speak Up
“If the music is grating on your nerves or the air conditioner is blowing on your head, say so immediately,” says Jaeger. “There’s no need to wait for the aesthetician to ask if you’re comfortable.”

Meritage Resort & Spa – Napa California – Property Overview

The Meritage Resort & Spa

The Meritage Resort & Spa: When most people think of lodging in Napa, they think of up-valley resorts such as Meadowood or Solage. This is precisely what makes the Meritage Resort & Spa different. The upscale property opened toward the end of 2006, and remains one of the only high-end resorts in the southern part of the county (the new Westin Verasa is scheduled to open near the train depot in downtown Napa in September).

Despite its location at the back of an office park, the Meritage is regularly hopping with independent travelers and corporate visitors. Two adjacent buildings make up the Vino Bello Resort, part of the Shell Vacations condo-hotel program.

Comfort zone

My standard room on a recent visit evoked a field of mustard – the walls, the curtains and the comforter on the firm king-size bed all were in shades of yellow. The similar-colored night tables, desk and dresser provided little relief from this monochromatic immersion, though the comfy (and white) his-and-hers robes were a welcome touch. My favorite spot was a wicker chair and ottoman, from which I could look out the window at seemingly endless vineyards. Sloped ceilings provided a sensation of spaciousness.

Bath and beyond

Bathrooms were compact but modern. A glass-enclosed shower (great water pressure) was positioned next to a spacious marble counter with two sinks, and the toilet was a separate water closet. A hair dryer and Bare Escentuals toiletries were provided. Towels were soft and plentiful. No tub.

Grounds for approval

The U-shaped hotel frames a pool, hot tub, fire pit and bocce court that are open from sunrise till 10 p.m. A modest fitness center is also available. Perhaps the resort’s biggest attraction is a 22,000-square-foot Estate Cave dug into the hillside behind the hotel. Wine tasting is available in the cave’s Estate Wine Bar until 7 p.m.; the facility also features the full-service Spa Terra, complete with steam grottoes, soaking pools and Mediterranean-inspired decor with custom mosaics. For true indulgence, spring for the Vino Bello, a 50-minute body treatment that includes a grapeseed scrub and a wine mud wrap ($130).

Geared up

The usual suspects: flat-screen high-definition television, DVD player, clock radio and two telephones. All rooms also come with coffeemakers and mini-refrigerators; there’s no minibar, but guests receive one bottle of wine and a daily allotment of soda and water as part of an inescapable $15 daily resort fee. The resort fee also includes wireless and Ethernet access, among other “amenities,” such as access to the 24-hour business center. No safe.

In the vicinity

Not much (unless you like office parks), though downtown Napa is a short complimentary shuttle ride away. Have the driver drop you at the new Oxbow Public Market and grab a glass of Pinot Noir at the Oxbow Wine Merchant. For dinner, walk over to Azzurro Pizzeria & Enoteca, where you can watch chefs make thin-crust personal pizzas to order. Try the farro and fava bean antipasti.

Good to know

Siena, the resort’s on-site restaurant, is another good choice for hearty meals. To get the most of that $15 daily resort fee, check out the nightly wine reception in the inviting lobby on Thursday and Friday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Servers usually pour samples of wine from Trinitas Cellars, which is the resort’s private label. On Saturdays, the hotel also sponsors yoga by the pool at 7:30 a.m.

Highs and lows

Considering all of the beautiful views in Napa County, the Meritage’s location is a bit underwhelming. Still, for high-end lodging close to the city of Napa, the clean and comfortable property is a good option – at least until bigger and better properties open downtown.

Spa Terre

Located entirely underground in our 22,000 square foot Estate Cave, Spa Terra at The Meritage Resort is an experience unto itself. The hushed serenity of the cave, with natural stone and copper water features combined with Old World Florentine architecture and furnishings, offers guests an environment unlike any other.

Vitals: 875 Bordeaux Way, Napa. (707) 251-1900, 274 rooms (including 10 with disabled access). $269-$429, double occupancy rate.

Mission Inn offers a downtown spa getaway

The Mission Inn Hotel and Spa is a Riverside landmark, full of history and architectural beauty. These days, it is also a destination for those looking to spend a day in modern luxury.

Kelly’s Spa at the Mission Inn offers a relaxing experience with two spa villas, 12 treatment rooms, a nail salon, soaking tubs and more. The spa is 7,000 square feet of lavish comfort.

For those looking to spend a night or two, there are 239 guest rooms, including 28 suites. Each suite is finely detailed and unique. Some of them have housed presidents, vice presidents and other important people.

The Mission Inn, in downtown Riverside, has hosted presidents, vice presidents and other VIPs in its long history.

“Especially now, considering the cost of gas and the hassle of traveling, we are a fantastic place to locally get away and really have a weekend without having to travel very far,” said Chris Henny, director of sales and marketing for the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa.

The Mission Inn Hotel and Spa also offers four elite dining options. Duane’s Prime Steaks and Seafood is a AAA Four-Diamond restaurant and also has one of the best wine selections in the Inland Empire. Visitors can also try Las Campanas for gourmet Mexican food, Bella Trattoria for Italian food and The Mission Inn Restaurant for an eclectic mix of comfort food.

Holding all of this together is the rich history of the Mission Inn, encompassing more than 100 years. The original owner, Frank Miller, continuously added to the hotel and incorporated a variety of architectural styles from all over the world.

The Mission Inn continues to thrive as the cornerstone of downtown Riverside under owner Duane Roberts. Visitors can learn more about this history at the Mission Inn Museum located in the hotel.

“The Mission Inn is an ideal getaway for Californians because we’re one of the most distinct and celebrated historical properties in the country and a valued piece of Riverside history,” Henny said.

The Mission Inn Hotel and Spa is at 3649 Mission Inn Ave. in Riverside.

Hot Springs Day Spa Attractions and Attivities

Attractions and activities abound in nearby Spa City

Hot Springs is Arkadelphia’s next door neighbor. The fun-filled city has a lot to offer to residents and tourist, but for college students, it’s a blessing.

Many agree that if it weren’t for Hot Springs, college life in Arkadelphia wouldn’t be as entertaining.

“I like to go up there and get away from the school work every once in a while,” sophomore mass media major Cameron Soils said.

“I work at Wendy’s and at the on-campus radio station on top of going to school, so I do it big when I can in the Springs.”

According to HotSprings.org, Hot Springs is America’s first resort and one of the south’s most popular family vacation and convention destination spots.

It has attractions for all ages and interest.

Hot Springs has everything – from an alligator farm and petting zoo for the little ones to luxurious day spas and salons for older tourists.

“I like to go and get a message every so often because it’s very relaxing,” senior early childhood education major Brittany Stuart said.

Ablution Day Spa and Salon is one of the many spas in Hot Springs. They offer four levels of comfort and sit on 4,500 square feet.

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

The first level consists of things such as facials and cellulite reduction.

The second level offers body messages and body wraps.

The third and fourth levels include a full grooming of hair and nails.

Not only is Hot Springs a place to relax, but is also a place to learn.

The Belle of Hot Springs Riverboat is a 300-passenger riverboat where tourist can pay to float through beautiful Lake Hamilton as they listen to the captain talk about the “spa city.”

The tour includes a historical outlook of the city, along with colorful anecdotes and views of natural islands, the Ouachita Mountains, million-dollar mansions.

“You get a good view of the mountains going to Hot Springs from Arkadelphia,” junior physical education major Dionte Davis said.

There’s also a theme park for families to go to and have a fun- filled day.

Magic Springs Theme Park is also a water park, so when fun-seeking families do go to the park, it’s twice the thrills and twice the fun.

The good thing about that is you pay for one ticket to have access to both parks.

Shopping plays a big role in Hot Spring’s reputation.

There is Hot Springs Mall, where you and the family can shop till you drop at a variety of major retailers.

Other shopping stores, such as Beverly’s Casual Shop, Arlington Hotel Mall, Memorabilia-N-More and many other stores are located throughout Hot Springs.

The hardest thing about shopping and attractions in Hot Springs is trying not to spend all your money on the great things Hot Springs has to offer. It can be a hard task, but it would be a task well worth it.

Foundry Park Inn & Spa – Athens GA – Spa Golf Football

May 12th, 2008

Foundry Park Inn & Spa in Athens: Play golf or take your cooler to a Georgia Bulldog football game

The Foundry Park Inn & Spa, Athens GA may be a fancy boutique hotel, but they don’t neglect the basics here – a cooler in your room to take to nearby Sanford Stadium for the Georgia Bulldog football games. They also have tailgate-to-go menus.

Foundry Park is the first and only boutique property in Athens, on the edge of the active Athens downtown. It was designed as a replica of row houses built in the city back in the 1820s.

But, the best part is the inn’s proximity to the energetic music scene Athens is known for, as well as Bulldog football and the good collection of Athens golf courses. In fact, all you have to do is walk a few steps from your door for the music; the Melting Point on the grounds hosts a variety of musical acts – it’s a great place to see live music, with its intimate setting and good acoustics.

It’s a place to hear terrific local bands as well as nationally recognized acts like Sean Lennon, Leon Russell, the Derek Trucks Band, and Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. They have different themes for different nights, like Tuesday bluegrass and a Thursday night jazz series. It’s a low-key, comfortable place to hear good music, with its 30-foot smoke stack and three levels of seating inside all close to the stage. Its brick and stucco décor recalls the old foundry that used to be on the grounds.

“I come here a lot to hear bluegrass,” said Margarite Duncan, who lives outside of Athens. “I can’t get enough of it. I don’t care much for the other stuff.”

The facility itself blends the rustic with the sophisticated. There are 119 rooms and suites, and the décor is understated elegance. There is a conference room, a fitness center, an excellent spa and a fitness center. The inn also has the Hoyt House Restaurant.

The property has four different levels of rooms: deluxe king or double, parlor suite, king suite and the two-bedroom Presidential suite, which is 1,400 square feet; one bedroom has a king canopy bed and the other has two queen, four-poster beds. The suite also has a wet bar, a full-sized refrigerator as well as a private entrance. It’s located directly above the spa and adjacent to the outdoor pool.

The rooms are decorated with antique-style wood furniture and with modern amenities, like big work desks with two phones with dual lines. High-speed, wireless Internet is available.

The conference center is 9,000 square feet of space with nine separate rooms holding groups from 10 to more than 400, and it has on-site catering and audiovisual services. The center includes a kitchen and offers themed buffet dinners, like the Southern picnic or New Orleans buffet.

The Hoyt House Restaurant is also on the grounds, a restored, two-story home where Nathan Hoyt, pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Athens, offered guidance for lost souls for 35 years. The structure was originally built in 1829 and has three dining rooms and six fireplaces. It serves mainly Southern food, from stacked fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese to New York strip and she-crab soup.

The Athens Steam Company Pub is also located at The Foundry, and has a vast selection of domestic and import beer, like Big Hoppy Monster, Golden Ale and Rye Pale Ale, as well as the pub’s own specialty brew, Red Ale. It also offers pub fare to go with the beer.

The day spa is tucked away in a secluded corner of the inn and offers various sorts of massage – Swedish, hot stone and aromatherapy – and his and hers couples massages are available. One of the more popular massages is the “Two for Tuesdays” special, two 20-minute massages for $60.
