Tips for Getting the Best Spa Experience

Anyone can schedule a massage or make an appointment to get a toenail touch-up. Coming away from every spa trip relaxed and ready to face the world requires a little preparation. Here are a few tips to help you master the pampering process.

* 1. Leave the kiddies at home. Most spas are considered an adult environment and do not permit children to tag along for spa services. When developing your spa budget, consider the cost of a babysitter. Some spas, such as Cloud 9 and Spa Royale, offer mini-services for kids. Contact each spa for age limits and the services they have available for kids.

* 2. Silence your cell phone. Just as you would at the movies or in church, don’t forget to turn off your cell phone; no one wants their massage-turned-nap interrupted by the outside world by your BlackBerry. Better yet, many spas recommend leaving the cell phone at home.

* 3. Arrive early. Getting into relaxation mode early can be important for every spa-goer, particularly first-timers. Showing up to your appointment ten minutes ahead of time gives you a chance to meet your therapist or spa technician, fill out paper work and get comfortable in a new environment. Being late, however, will often result in cancellation, although you’ll still be charged for the appointment. Check with each spa for its late arrival policies.

* 4. Give graciously. Many people are unsure of how to tip for most services, including after a massage or facial. Generally, spas recommend tipping 15-20 percent and can include the tip in your bill if requested. If your spa experience wasn’t everything you hoped for, note your personal preferences to the technician or therapist the next time you make a visit.

* 5. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. When getting ready for your spa time, dress in the spirit of the day: comfortably. Most spas will have you undress for a facial or massage and you’ll spend the rest of your time in a luxuriously fluffy robe. For facials, show up clean-faced or the spa can take off your makeup. If it’s your first time, make your appointment up to a week in advance of a big event to prepare for any unexpected skin reactions.

Flotation Spa Location – Experience

April 28th, 2009

At Peace Floatation Spa: Where ‘East Meets West’ in Floating Therapy At Peace Floatation Spa – with their television debut on Home and Lifestyle Television – is quickly gaining attention with their European-styled and famous Floatation therapy. Floatation Therapy consists of floating in 12-inches of body-tempered water, made incredibly dense with 800 pounds of toxin-extracting Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate). “The goal is to float away stress, aches, pains and toxins; giving the body a rejuvenated and deepened state of relaxation,” says At Peace Spa owner and former Texas Ranger first baseman, Pete O’Brien.

Research has proven that stress and inflammation can wreak havoc on our bodies and is often the preliminary symptom to many illnesses. The zero-gravity environment provides relief to all of the body’s intersystems, such as skeletal, muscular, circulatory, neurological and more. It’s such a deep relaxation because there are no pressure points. “In fact,” continues O’Brien, “it has been reported that a one-hour floatation experience is equivalent to four hours of restorative sleep, and similar to a 3-day fast for detoxification.”

The spa opened in the summer of 2008 as the only place in North Texas to experience floatation therapy. Its spa-like and tranquil environment enhances the mind/body relationship for individual healing, wellness and enhances overall performance. Everyone floats for different reasons: Some for chronic pain or stress management (arthritis, inflammation, fibromyalgia, etc.), others for speeding the recovery process due to surgery or injury, increasing visualization/creativity, meditation, jet lag, insomnia, reducing stress hormones, detoxification (especially when added to a massage), stimulating brain waves and so much more.

The introductory special is hard to pass up. Three one-hour floatation sessions for $120 to first time clients. A package including one hour of floatation followed by a one hour massage is also priced at a great value of $125. These make excellent choices for gift giving because it is such a new and rejuvenating experience, anyone would love it. A variety of membership packages are available that include free massages, friends/family passes and more.

Sagestone at Red Mountain Spa Review

April 14th, 2009

red-mountain-spaSometimes you don’t have to travel far to escape. That’s what I discovered this past weekend at Red Mountain Spa in Ivins.

Many local people think of the spa as a place reserved for visitors from out of town, but many of the amenities are available to Southern Utah residents.

One of those is the Quick Escape package ($79), which I tried out Saturday. It includes lunch at the Canyon Breeze restaurant and a 50-minute Swedish massage.

It works. I really felt as if I had left Southern Utah.

Since it had been 10 years since my last real massage, I wasn’t sure what to expect as I drove along Snow Canyon Parkway in the rain, listening to the relaxing tunes of Gomez. My first surprise was the size of the resort. I parked near the restaurant, figuring the spa would be close by. After wandering in the rain for a few minutes I couldn’t find it.

Luckily, a nice employee in a golf cart, John, offered me a ride to the rounded building that houses the Sagestone Spa.

Stepping inside Sagestone Spa is like stepping outside of Southern Utah. Sure you can still see the Red Mountain outside the windows but it’s definitely a more cosmopolitan atmosphere than is often found in the region.

I changed into a thick, heavy robe in the locker room walked out to meet my massage therapist, Katrina. Soon I was lying facedown on a heated massage table as the escape began.

I carry a lot of stress in my neck and upper back so Katrina concentrated on that area as she began to work her magic.

Long, flowing strokes are characteristic of Swedish massage, which is a more traditional massage style. As I relaxed, her hands became waves of therapeutic strength, washing over my tense muscles and gently lulling them into submission.

Although I didn’t fall asleep, I entered into a near dreamlike state, allowing all my thoughts to be carried away with each stroke.

I barely remember Katrina asking me to turn over as she placed a towel behind my neck and a warm cloth over my eyes. During the last half of the massage I discovered places I didn’t even realize were tense.

Even though 50 minutes sounded like a long time at first, the massage was over too soon. I easily could have gone for another hour. Who couldn’t?

As she finished, Katrina told me to make sure I drank a lot of water so I didn’t get too sore.

After changing out of the robe I met John again and he gave me a ride over to the restaurant. He told me the restaurant features a revolving menu to liven things up for the guests.

At Canyon Breeze I met Tracey Welsh, the spa’s general manager and director of operations, and Tami Prine, the marketing communication manager. We went through a buffet filled with an eclectic mix of healthy choices and found our table.

As the music of Norah Jones played in the background we talked of the spa and Southern Utah in general. Tracey agreed with Katrina that many locals get the feeling that the spa is only for out-of-towners. However, the Quick Escape package is targeted specifically for locals like me who want to get away for a few hours for a relaxing massage and a tasty lunch.

The lunch was tasty. For many there is a myth that healthy food doesn’t taste good. But some of the best meals I’ve eaten are healthy ones. You just have to have some culinary talent in the kitchen, and apparently Red Mountain Spa has that.

For lunch I loaded up my plate with a variety of fresh items from the salad bar, including a new novelty for me: roasted soy nuts. Items like this provide a safe alternative for people with certain allergies.

I also noticed while dishing up my food that many of the dishes were marked as appropriate for spa guests undergoing a “cleanse.”

The flavorful roasted veggies were my favorite part of the lunch. However, I also enjoyed the warm chicken and vegetable soup, which was perfect for the cool, rainy day.

I was reluctant to leave the calming atmosphere of Red Mountain Spa after lunch but my quick escape was over. It was time to leave my two-hour vacation and return home.

Fort Worth Texas Hotel Luxury Spa – Mokara

March 23rd, 2009

Located on the third floor of the sparkly, shiny and very recently launched Omni Fort Worth Hotel, the Mokara Spa is one of what the mothership is calling its “upscale spas.” And it delivers on upscale with soft robes you almost melt into upon arrival, a calming and comfy waiting room with an expansive view of downtown and an opportunity to hit the sauna and just linger long after being pampered.

Private rooms for massaging, facial-ing and body polishing also feel sinfully luxurious, with softer-than-soft sheets and just-right temperature, which is a big deal when you’re mostly naked. Although eight varieties of massages are featured, from basic Swedish to the signature Mokara, being nine months pregnant, I decided to try the Mother To Be. As the woman who booked the appointment said when I called, “It is 60 minutes of relaxation, which I am guessing you need right about now.”

The experience: The Mokara Spa just opened and, as expected, a few kinks needed unkinking. Nobody answered the phone the first four times I tried to make an appointment, and my first appointment was canceled due to an unexpected spa closing.

Both were handled with apologies and professionalism, though, and a massage is inevitably judged by its relaxation factor. Especially when discomfort has been a way of life for almost 10 months.

I began the Mother To Be by going over a questionnaire with my masseuse: How is the pregnancy going? What hurts? What needs TLC? What do you want from the next 60 minutes?

And with that begins the pampering.

Starting on my back (yes, at an incline, to avoid the pregnancy no-no of lying flat on your back), what I am told is an all-natural, chemical-free whipped shea butter balm is massaged into what have become cankles and extremely swollen feet. Both problems seem like distant memories after a couple of minutes, and this continues on the legs and arms.

Of course, the real test of any massage is when you flip onto your stomach and the kneading and rubbing is focused on the back. And anybody who has been or is pregnant knows there is no way to get there, or even close to there, comfortably.

Instead the masseuse had me lie on my side, gave me a pillow for support and started working on the kinks that had built up after almost nine months of carrying around another person. Then it was on to the other side. And I am not ashamed to say, I have not slept that well in two months.

The massage literature promises to use “tried & tested, safe pregnancy techniques to . . . alleviate fatigue, sooth muscle and joint pain, and improve circulation.” I just know I felt lighter and better.

I woke up just as she was massaging my temples and scalp, which were no longer begging for an Advil and then, poof, we were done way, way, way too soon.

Cost: The Mother To Be is $110 for a 60-minute massage, while a Mokara Mother To Be package, which includes massage, Moroccan Rose Manicure and Instant Revival Pedicure, is $230. A complete list of all spa services, including packages, is available online or in a brochure from the hotel.

Good to know: While adapted for each stage of pregnancy, the Mother To Be massage (like all things during these nine months) is probably best to run by your OB-GYN first. And book now, before the secret gets out about this spa and appointments are harder to come by.

Spa hours: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday

Spa Blended Scents – One of a Kind Personalized Perfume You Design

March 20th, 2009

Most women have what they refer to as their “signature scent,” the fragrance they’ve been spritzing their necks and wrists with for years. They, along with friends and family who can smell them coming, consider the scent all their own. But, it usually isn’t. Not even close.

When a perfume is produced, packaged then peddled at every major department store in the country, the term signature scent is about as realistic as celebrity fragrance designers stepping foot in perfumeries.

But, Jane Hendler is changing that. As the founder of Ajne Rare & Precious, a custom blending perfumery in Carmel, Calif., she’s been concocting couture fragrances for customers such as Reese Witherspoon, Kanye West and Hilary Swank for four years. Now, she brings Ajne Parfum Demi-Blend to the Spa at Four Seasons Las Vegas, making personalized perfumes a spa visit away for locals.

“When I first opened, everyone wanted the custom-blended perfumes but they weren’t dedicated to the length of time it took and the $1,500 cost,” she says. “Then I came up with the idea of preblended accords.”

Every accord contains a blend of the finest and purest essential oils, which Hendler’s partner and husband, Rex Rombach, searches high and low to find. Rose oils derive from Bulgaria and champaca oils hail from West India. Each one of Ajne’s 200 plant-distilled essential oils is free of aroma-chemicals and phthalates, making them just as friendly to the environment as your sense of smell.

Demi-Blends all start with a test of the chakras, which have become a focus of the spa industry in recent years. Each of the seven chakras represents a different energy center, ranging from communication to spiritual connectedness. Based on questionnaire answers, a mélanger — a specialist trained in blending custom perfumes — determines the weakness and strength of each chakra and which accords will aid in harmonizing them. From there, clients sniff out a process of elimination. The final few accords that remain make up the Demi-Blend unique to their needs and senses.

“The pure essential oils in our formulations actually have a balancing effect on each chakra because I divided all my fragrances into chakra categories,” says Hendler.

Bottles start at $200 for .5 oz of spray perfume. A black heart flacon dabber is $250 for .5 oz and 1 oz. of spray perfume is $300.

But, perfumes aren’t the only form the oils take. Diffusers also can be produced to fill a home, event hall or wedding reception area with a scent. In fact, Four Seasons Las Vegas contemplated holding the Demi-Blends in its bridal salon it’s so popular with new brides. Newlyweds can formulate a scent that will forever remind them of their big day and brides can give mini bottles as wedding favors.

“When (a perfume) is one-of-a-kind it becomes even more special,” says Hendler.

Earlier this week, I reviewed one of the more intimate spas on the Strip and one of its blissful treatments, the Escape Stress Body Escape. For those who are dying to go back (or who still haven’t been), The Spa at New York-New York just announced four new spring treatments available for a limited time, now through April 30. Each treatment includes a free cherry blossom-scented candle guests can take home with them to try and help them escape when they can’t make it back out to the spa. After all, we all need to tighten our purse strings a bit in this economy, right?

For those desperate to get rid of those kinks in their back (and we know you have them!), the Cherry Blossom Massage is just what the doctor ordered. Indulge in your own customized massage with combined elements of Swedish relaxation and therapeutic deep tissue. The refreshing scent of cherry blossoms will accentuate the treatment. The Cherry Blossom Massage is available as a 25-minute service for $70, a 50-minute service for $125 and a 75-minute service for $185.

The 50-minute service ($110) includes a full-body exfoliation with a Cherry Blossom scrub that’s designed to leave your skin feeling soft and smooth, followed by an application of Cherry Blossom lotion for a refreshed, hydrated feeling.

Hydrotherapy Soak at The Spa at New York-New YorkThere’s also the 50-minute Cherry Blossom Soak & Glow ($85) which lets guests relax in a luxurious Cherry Blossom-scented bath while experiencing a mini-facial. Your skin will be ready to glow by the time this heavenly treatment comes to an end! Although I haven’t tried the treatment personally, this one sounds too good to pass up!

Harmonie European Day Spa Saratoga California

March 17th, 2009

The Harmonie European Day Spa Experience

The health spa has been around since antiquity. Aroma and massage therapies were first practiced by the ancient Greeks for their healing benefits. Romans added esthetics to their treatments. Then, in the early 1800s, the spa was reintroduced into Europe.
“I had my first facial at 14,” says Patricia Bottero, a native Parisian and founder of Harmonie European Day Spa in Saratoga, CA. “A facial is simply something a young woman in France experiences.”

Bottero, a Los Gatos resident, was trained in the European tradition of skin and body care in Paris, and she continues to go to Europe to update her knowledge. As an esthetician, she first worked in California at a full-service salon, but in 1988, a couple of years later, she created Harmonie Skin and Body Care, now called Harmonie European Day Spa.

“The day spa experience is not about lazy pampering. The day spa is about the necessity we have to honor our femininity, especially at times when everything else and everyone else in our lives seems to be so much more important. Stress alone can make a woman feel unattractive, and if she feels unattractive, she will look that way,” says Bottero.

In an atmosphere influenced by French Loire castles, Harmonie clients are indulged by estheticians in dimly lit private rooms filled with soothing music and sensuous aromas. Estheticians trained by Bottero cater to clients personally, attending to their particular skin and body-care needs.

The spa provides facials, intensive treatments for acne, brown spots and wrinkles; full-body and other massages to promote relaxation and body detoxification; depilatories, thalassotherapy body envelopes–seawater and sea botanical body wraps–to firm, tone and detoxify skin; makeup application and lessons, manicure and pedicure.

One treatment consists of combining thermal seaweed mud with reflexology technique using Chinese acupressure points on hands and feet to relieve tension and essential oils for aromatherapy and to aid circulation.

“We want women to feel beautiful not just look beautiful. A large part of the power of beauty is how a woman feels when she is confident and self-assured,” says Bottero.

The spa offers special packages for expectant mothers, brides-to-be, busy executives and teens. Men’s treatments are also available.

Harmonie was voted Best Day Spa by both the Metro Silicon Valley Magazine and Elle Magazine.)

Harmonie European Day Spa is located at 14501 Big Basin Way, Saratoga, California. For more information call (408) 741-4997

Med Spas to Eliminate Tired Looking Skin

March 10th, 2009

It’s pretty much a fact of life, “when you look good, you feel good,” and in today’s youth-conscious society most people want to look their best.
Cosmetic surgery has been helping people turn back time for decades, and in the battle against the clock it has a new ally in med spas.

Med spas offer noninvasive skin treatments that can be the bridge between tired-looking skin and surgery.

Claremont resident Lorraine Ricciardi had sun spots on her face, neck and chest. They didn’t bother her enough to have surgery, but was open to other options.

“I grew up in California and spent a lot of time in the sun,” said Ricciardi, a 50-year-old knock-out. “It’s not that I was unhappy, but I knew my skin could improve.”

Ricciardi, who owns the Claremont boutique, Too Blonde, noticed that a med spa had opened not far from her business and decided to check it out.

She discovered that gia Laser Aesthetic Center, founded by vascular surgeon Dr. Jeffery W. Kronson, offered various nonsurgical laser skin treatments.

Kronson, who’s been a staunch advocate of noninvasive enhancement procedures for years, opened the center because he wanted to offer an alternative to going under the knife.

“I’m all for surgery when it’s needed,” he said. “But there are people who are having face-lifts way too young – years, decades, before they needed them.”

Ricciardi was nervous, but decided to have laser skin treatments. She soon learned those fears were unfounded.

“It feels like little rubber bands lightly flicking you,” she said. “At first your face looks red, a little sunburned. After about two weeks my skin looked so much better. I don’t have to wear near as much make-up as I used to. I’m getting lots of compliments, people are always saying, `you look so good. What are you doing to your skin?”‘

Laser technology has an abundance of positives for clients such as being less expensive and noninvasive with no scaring or much recuperation time.

Dr. Subhas Gupta, the chief of plastic surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center, believes in utilizing the technology of noninvasive treatments and jokes that he loses about 20 percent of his patients to such procedures.

“We have very clear parameters to evaluate an aging face that guides us to surgery,” Gupta said. “Everybody gets wrinkles, it’s all gravity and sun. Maybe you can avoid them if you hung upside down in the dark.”

He explained that wrinkles are mainly either paralytic – the kind that come and go like smile lines or crows feet – or static – the ones that are there all the time.

Plastic surgeons determine the severity of wrinkles by a scale of one to four created by Dr. Richard Glagau. Wrinkles should be at least 1.5 mm deep for any surgical procedure.

There are also varying degrees of face-lifts and through an evaluation it can be decided what can be improved, how much it will improve and how long recovery will take.

“About 25 percent of my patients walk in, have the procedure, walk out and go to work the next day,” he said. “About 50 percent take about a seven-day recovery time and 25 percent, mostly those over 65 take about two-to-three weeks to recover.”

The most important issue to Gupta is that all patients make an informed decision.

“Patients have to know their every option,” he said. “They need to have them presented clearly so they understand all the options, alternatives and risks.”

Celebrity Cellulite Exorcist

March 7th, 2009

smoothshapesCelebrities Call Anushka Blau The Cellulite Exorcist, And Here She Reveals Tips For Getting Rid Of The Dreaded Dimples…

SUCH is Anushka Blau’s success in dealing with the unsightly dimpling which plagues up to 98 per cent of women, that New York’s models and socialites call her the cellulite exorcist.

America’s leading authority on the dreaded orange peel effect has come up with a series of nutritional advice, exercises, therapies and products which she says can visibly reduce cellulite on anyone.

As the 64 year-old points out, it is a condition which affects nearly every woman in the world, whether supermodel or grandmother.

She said: “I was a teenager when I began to wonder why it was that I had a great waist and a nice shape, but had all this dimpling on my behind.

“At the time nobody could give me an answer to it and that really planted a seed in my mind.

“From then on I always wanted to know more about it, especially when I discovered that it will affect between 90 and 98 per cent of women in their lifetime.”

According to Anushka, some of the main causes of cellulite include genetics, puberty, pregnancy and menopause.

She also says that birth control pills can increase the problem, as can medical conditions such as thyroid and water retention.

But the main cause of dimpling, she says, is what women eat.

She said: “What we put in our mouths, combined with our fast lives, has a major influence on our cellulite – especially the more refined carbohydrates and processed food a woman eats as the body doesn’t know what else to do with this except store it as fat.

“Then a lot of women lead an incredibly busy life, eat up a storm at night time and then vegetate, which doesn’t help.

“Plus they do also have weaker connective tissue than men, which means that as we mature we get laxity.

“But my advice to any woman who wants to try and combat cellulite is to start with the basics, which means good nutrition.

That is the most important thing you can change because when women eat too much of the wrong kinds of foods, it simply goes straight to the bum and thighs.

“That doesn’t mean you need to deprive yourself, what I am talking about is a rule of thumb.”

Anushka recommends that women eat five times a day as this keeps the metabolism ticking over and to try and eliminate fried foods, animal fats and artificial sugars from their diet.

Instead she advices women to eat lots of fibrous foods such as lentils, vegetables with the skin left on and dried fruits, plus protein as that is essential for collagen production.

She recommends eating some kind of lean meat with every meal and also points to eggs as these contain minerals and “cellulite stopping” lecithin.

Anushka adds that body brushing, massage and exercise, especially her own exercises which are shown on her website, are all crucial in combating the dimpling on bums and thighs.

Certain products, in particularly her own such as the Cellulite Censored Liposerum, can also have a great effect, especially when combined with body brushing and exfoliation. Anushka suggests women try Folidea stockings, which help break down cellulite as you move, and MBT shoes, which increase muscle activity when walking.

Many of her New York clients also opt for the high technology beauty treatments she can offer, such as the Smooth Shapes, an FDA device, which combines laser and light energy with surface skin rollers and a vacuuming action.

She said: “This treatment really is amazing as the laser light restores collagen and boost circulation.

“Others are designed to focus on detox and lymphatic drainage. If someone comes to me for these, I usually develop a course for them based on their own needs as cellulite is a very individual thing.

“And while I will never say that I can get rid of cellulite, I will say that all my clients have a visible improvement.

“By treating the cellulite many women also lose a substantial amount of inches from their legs as well, even if they were not overweight as such to begin with.

“To women trying to tackle their cellulite on their own, I would tell them not to expect miracles and to be patient, building up their new habits bit by bit.

“Once they start seeing a difference, then they will be more encouraged to do more.

“Also, one of the best things for me is to see the increased self-confidence women have once their cellulite has improved and, as we all know, that has such a huge knock-on effect on every other area of their lives.”
