Summertime on 9: Cranwell Resort & Spa

The long winding road that leads you to Cranwell Resort & Spa in Lenox is as unassuming as it is long. But it’s at the crest of this hill where the real resort begins to come into focus.

“Cranwell is unique in many aspects. We’re only about a two and a half hour drive out of New York, about a two hour drive out of Boston, and you’re in beautiful country,” said Cranwell Resort & Spa President Lewis Kiesler.

Nestled in the heart of the Berkshires, Cranwell was named the “Top Resort Spa in Massachusetts” in [Read more →]

Canyon Ranch Tucson AZ Destination Spa

Canyon_Ranch_Healthtel.png

Canyon Ranch
Canyon Ranch Tucson, AZ., and Canyon Ranch Lenox, MA
800-742-9000

Canyon Ranch helped pioneer the healthy spa concept in 1979 and still does it better than anyplace else. Healthy, delicious food? Check. Top-notch skin care? Doris Day, the dermatologist on our panel (meet all of our judges), rates this spa a perfect 10. In the fitness category, Jo Hannafin, MD, gives Canyon Ranch’s offerings, which range from restorative yoga to hard-core hiking, the highest score of any spa we evaluated. Our judges also love the staff’s high level of accreditation and training. (The place is crawling with doctors.) A nurse tailors a schedule to help you meet your health goals, from lowering cholesterol to beating insomnia, and may also suggest tests like a mammogram or a stride analysis—all done on-site. “Canyon Ranch has the high standards that other spas strive to match.”  Choose between desert (the 240-guest Tucson spa) and mountains (the 200-guest Lenox location, tucked into the Berkshires), both of which take maximum advantage of the natural beauty.

Don’t miss: Yamuna Body Rolling, done with special balls to build strength, flexibility, and balance.
Cost: $5,130 and up per week, per person, double occupancy, at Lenox ($5,750 at Tucson), including meals and some treatments and wellness services. Lenox also offers a three-night stay starting at $2,040.

Relache spa at the Gaylord Hotel at National Harbor

Gaylord_National_Resort___Relache_Spa_Washington_DC.png

The diary of a spa virgin
How a new spa made me feel like a new woman

I have lived a truly sheltered and deprived life.  Up until last Saturday, I had not yet experienced that rite of passage for a young woman that brings her to a fevered pitch of ecstasy and merriment, the spa day.
Fortunately, for newcomers like me and veteran spa denizens, there is a new destination for luxury and indulgence just a hop, skip, and water taxi ride away from Old Town.

What a perfect place for my maiden voyage into beauty bliss.
Nestled in the Gaylord Hotel at National Harbor, lies Relache, French for “relax.”
The chic French theme runs throughout the spa with shining marble floors, black and white sofas and cushions, and fragrant orchids adorning every surface.   The lobby where I arrive is grand, but not imposing.

I am soon greeted by a chipper spa girl and ushered into the ladies locker room, which has every amenity one can possibly need. Blow dryers, tooth brushes, moisturizers, and even weight scales, which is probably the only thing I did not sample.

This sure beats the heck out of the locker room at the office gym, I think. I am handed a plush robe (with pockets deep enough for a blackberry and/or cell) and get into my spa uniform.

I am given a quick tour of the 20,000 square foot premises (for those of you like me unfamiliar with the spa scene, that’s big).

First, the sauna and steam rooms. The steam room was a little small for my claustrophobic taste, but still clean and functional. The sauna is larger, and the best part is the lovely eucalyptus scent that is emitted with the steam. You feel as if you are in the middle of a sultry Australian forest.
Sorry, no Koalas.

Next, the VIP couples suite. A peaceful white room with breathtaking views of the Potomac and the harbor. Two small beds lie in the middle of the room for mothers and daughters, girlfriends, and newlyweds to enjoy the spa’s services together. Pampering loves company.

Then, the main lounge area where you wait for your therapist or facialist to fetch you for your appointment. Another stunning view of the harbor and a place where you can chat with other spa visitors over a cup of herbal tea.  Although because the atmosphere is so tranquil and quiet, idle small talk seems inappropriate.

My facialist, Jean Martini, arrives and we go to a small, dimly lit room for my facial. I tell her that this is my first time, and she is patient and reassuring. She answers all of my questions and explains each step of the hour long signature treatment.

Like all the products used at Relache, the ones Jean employs are natural and organic with soothing aromatherapy elements. Indeed, most of the products one can purchase in the spa’s retail shop for home use.

“The first thing people ask me is ‘Why do I need a facial,’” Jean tells me. She explains that our skin in constantly regenerating cells, leaving behind the old ones. Also, as people age they lose vital natural moisturizers like collagen that keep the skin supple and smooth.

My facial removed the dead cells, deeply cleansed the under layers of my skin, and nourished my face leaving it luminous and healthy.

The signature facial also includes a light facial and neck massage with a wonderful scented lavender oil, which Jean also used on my hands and feet.

Now I know why this facial thing is so popular with my girlfriends. Yes, spas may be a girl’s best friend, but according to the spa director, Nelly Guerrero-Lent, boys can also benefit from Relache’s menu. “We have men come in all the time. I just had a gentleman come in this morning for a mani-pedi.” Yes, it is estimated that 25 percent of spa services in this country are performed on men.

Just a few months old, Relache is trying to expand its audience to Alexandrians who may want to get away for the day with a trip to National Harbor.  “The people in Alexandria already know about the great shopping and restaurants here at the harbor-but they may not know about the great spa possibilities,” Guerrero-Lent explained.  Relache wants to promote the idea of a true spa day-a few hours of spaing, then lunch at Pienza (Gaylord’s fantastic Italian eatery) and some sightseeing and late afternoon cocktails to round out the experience.

To lure more Alexandria spa lovers to Relache, the spa recently updated the price points for their luxurious services to make them more competitive with the average King Street salon. My signature facial and massage is now $130. A complete spa package called “the Versailles Indulgence” features massage, manicure, pedicure, facial, lunch, and your choice of shampoo, makeup lesson, or fitness class runs for $370.
Even the most jaded of spa rats will not be disappointed by Relache. The service is friendly, the services affordable, and the ambience is elegant and sophisticated.
I came in a skeptical spa virgin, but walked out a deflowered believer.

Dallas Texas a Great Spa Escape

Valentine__s_Day_Texas.png

Plan an escape to the ‘new’ Dallas

What’s bringing people to Dallas for a vacation? The local hotel association credits new development in retail, arts, parks and other areas, estimated at about $84 billion.
To grab some of the action, existing hotels are jumping into the major renovation game. Right now, these include the former Adam’s Mark downtown, now a Sheraton again; the Renaissance Dallas; and the Hilton Anatole, the latter two both situated on Stemmons Freeway, near Victory Park.

Two noteworthy upgrades

The Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek:
Opened in 1981, the Mansion is slated to begin a total renovation of all 143 rooms and suites later this year. The focus will be on highlighting the hotel’s residential feel and will bring a mix of furniture styles and fabrics to rooms, making them look less uniform.
Part of the $20 million project took place last year, with an update to the vaunted restaurant, to give it a less formal feel. This summer, the hotel offers a Rosewood Escapes rate available through Labor Day, starting at $235 per night Friday through Sunday, including full breakfast for two and valet parking; or $285 per night on Monday through Thursday, excluding extras. 2821 Turtle Creek Blvd., Dallas, 214-559-2100

Hyatt Regency Dallas:
The 1,122-room downtown hotel got a new look a couple of years ago, and now it’s begun a $46 million redo of the landmark Reunion Tower and adjacent Union Station. The big news in this project is the arrival of a Wolfgang Puck signature restaurant, 50 stories up in the revolving tower space, and a Wolfgang Puck Catering operation in the historic train station. Summer rates start at $154; the Explore Package, which includes valet parking, breakfast for two and two tickets to the Sixth Floor Museum, starts at $195. 300 Reunion Blvd., Dallas, 214-651-1234

Other summer specials
Two new hotels that have gained immediate popularity are the W-Victory and the Ritz-Carlton. Here are package deals that may spell a good weekend retreat in Big D:

W-Victory:
The Whisk Away package includes cocktails in The Living Room bar, parking and a Wonderful room, starting at $285. W Sleepaway Camp package includes cocktails, in-room DVD, breakfast and 3 p.m. checkout, starting at $309. 2440 Victory Park Lane, Dallas, 877-822-0000

Ritz-Carlton:
The Reconnect Package includes a deluxe room; $50 credit to be used in the restaurant, spa or for in-room charges; breakfast for two and valet parking, from $299. The Dinner at Fearing’s Package includes a deluxe room, dinner for two at Fearing’s restaurant, signed copies of the Barbwires CD from Fearing’s all-chef band and a signed copy of an exclusive Fearing’s recipe, breakfast for two and valet parking, from $479. The Spa Escape, including deluxe room, two signature massages in the spa, breakfast, valet parking and spa gratuity, from $539. 2121 McKinney Ave., Dallas, 214-922-0200

10 Affordable Spa Vacation Deals

If a spa vacation is on your wish list but you’re not sure you can afford it, think again. There are a number of inspirational spas, transformational spas, and — yes — affordable spa deals options out there. One of the easiest ways to book a spa escape on a budget is to check into a local hotel or resort spa for a long weekend (or longer). Many offer special spa-themed packages and last-minute spa deals that in-the-know locals can cash in on. But if getting away from it all is more your style, you can find lower-cost options for that, too.

“Affordable,” of course, is a relative term. So in this list you’ll find 7 weeklong spa experiences — from soaking in hot springs to fitness retreats offering ultra-healthy cuisine to all-inclusive stays at destination spas — chosen to fit almost any budget.

While cost was definitely a driving factor, ambience and the quality of the spa treatments, activities, and food were also considered in compiling this selection. They’re arranged according to price, from least to most expensive — with a cap of $3,000 for a weeklong stay. (And just in case you can’t quite carve out a full week away, the nightly rates are listed, as well.) Read on to find out where to get the most bang for your buck.

Ojo_Caliente_Sante_Fe_New_Mexico.png

OJO CALIENTE MINERAL SPRINGS RESORT & SPA, OJO CALIENTE, NEW MEXICO

I found this hot springs spa years ago when a friend of mine, living in Taos at the time, insisted I visit. We spent the afternoon (a day pass is $16) lounging in mineral pools containing arsenic (good for skin conditions and arthritis) and lithium (aids digestion and eases depression), sipping spring water, and spreading mud on our bodies then drying in the sun. It was blissful. In addition to 10 mineral pools, the 1,100-acre property has a historic hotel, a restaurant, and a full-fl edged spa. (Massages begin at $80 for 50 minutes and must be booked in advance.)

PRICE: From $109 per night; seven-night stays from $783.

Glen_Ivy_Hot_Springs_Mineral_Baths.png

GLEN IVY HOT SPRINGS SPA, CORONA, CALIFORNIA

The Native Americans were the first to enjoy these sacred waters, followed by the Spaniards, and by the 1890s the place had mushroomed into a health haven. Today, guests book into local hotels (accommodations are not available on-site) and then head to Glen Ivy’s spa playground (day admission is $35 on weekdays, $48 on weekends). A selection of soak-supplementing options are available: the legendary Glen Ivy Club Mud, where you can cover yourself in red clay (great for drawing impurities out of the pores and tightening the skin); a grotto for slathering on a hydrating body masque ($25); a wide variety of massages and facials (from $125); and a café serving tasty, healthy dishes made with local ingredients.

PRICE: Area hotels from $124 per night; packages that include seven days admission to Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa and seven nights accommodations from $892.

Kripalu_KRIPALU_CENTER__STOCKBRIDGE__MASSACHUSETTS.png

KRIPALU CENTER, STOCKBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS

When it comes to yoga, there are few, if any, retreat centers in the U.S. that can boast more offerings and renowned instructors than the Kripalu Center. (Each year, Kripalu’s 700 yogacentric programs attract more than 28,000 participants.) Its location — 150 wooded acres with a private lake and miles of trails — provides the ultimate setting for peaceful walks and meditative contemplation between yoga sessions, which are held three times a day: early morning, midday, and late afternoon. In between, there’s hiking and canoeing as well as workshops on topics like nutrition and creative writing. Ayurveda, India’s ancient science of holistic medicine, is practiced here and incorporated into everything from daily rituals (awaken before sunrise and give thanks before bed, for example) to therapeutic treatments like massage, nasal cleansing, and herbal detoxification sessions (spa treatments from $35).

PRICE: Dormitory accommodations from $155 per night (twonight minimum); seven-night stays from $1,106.

THE OAKS AT OJAI, OJAI, CALIFORNIA

Founded by legendary fitness buff Sheila Cluff, who still personally leads some of the activities and classes, The Oaks at Ojai celebrated its 30th birthday in 2007. Not surprisingly, there’s a cornucopia of get-in-shape classes, from aqua aerobics to core conditioning with hula hoops to belly dancing. New mission-style spa suites featuring hand-carved headboards and spacious jet tubs in the bathrooms add a feeling of luxury, and select spa treatments benefit from local ingredients, such as the Ojai Olive Oil Body Souffl é ($125, 75 minutes) that uses oil pressed from olives gathered in nearby groves. But it’s the 1,000-calorie-a-day spa cuisine that attracts the majority of guests — many who come with a holy grail weight-loss spa focus. Hikes and walks are popular, too — not to mention gorgeous — amid flowering citrus trees, lavender, and aloe.

PRICE: From $185 per night; seven-night stays from $1,295.

NEW AGE HEALTH SPA, NEVERSINK, NEW YORK

Just two hours from Manhattan in the Catskill Mountains, New Age Health Spa sits on 280 wooded acres combining lovely nature trails with spiritual, New Agey offerings like tarot card readings and a plethora of yoga, tai chi, and meditation classes. Native American rituals are the highlight of the spa menu: Try the Native Sun Purification ($95, 50 minutes), a spa hair treatment using traditional herbs grown in the spa’s greenhouse, or the complimentary Sweat Lodge Ceremony that is offered from April to November on the Saturday evening closest to the full moon.

PRICE: From $209 per night (two-night minimum); sevennight stays from $1,589.

PRICE: From $130 per night; six-night Detox Program from $1,699.

COPPERHOOD INN & SPA, SHANDAKEN, NEW YORK

This intimate destination spa — just 17 rooms — offers an old-Europe feel. Think gilded frames, marble, and wingback chairs. Hiking is the big draw, particularly in autumn’s glorious foliage, but yoga, meditation, and spa treatments (from $60) are popular, as well. Rooms are cozy, and afternoon tea is served daily in front of a fireplace — or on a wraparound deck with Adirondack chairs during the warmer months. The cuisine excludes red meat and instead features local ingredients like free-range chicken, cheese, and seasonal produce.

PRICE: From $325 per night (two-night minimum); seven-night stays from $2,240.

Spectacular New Concept in Coastal Resorts Opened in So. Cal

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

Ushering in a new era in coastal Southern California hospitality, L’Auberge Del Mar reopened today, introducing a new concept in luxury resort experiences with an elegant look and environment that is reminiscent of a high-end private estate.

Just in time for race season at Del Mar Race Track, where the surf meets the turf, the renowned 120-room historic seaside resort in Del Mar, Calif., managed by Destination Hotels & Resorts, recently completed a comprehensive renovation, investing what would exceed $200 thousand per room, or more than $25 million for the complete property renewal. In addition to a chic new look, the resort features upgraded services and superior amenities to appeal to the most discerning of travelers.

Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by the Pacific Ocean in the new lobby, which was carefully designed to blend a warm indoor environment boasting striking dark wood flooring, custom designed furnishings and carpets, soft lighting and original artwork, with coastal views and ocean breezes. A new Waterfall Terrace, accented with a 14-foot illuminated waterfall, Bleu Bar, adorned with a sleek fire pit and the pool deck are just beyond the lobby beckoning guests to the picturesque outdoors.

All guest rooms have a sophisticated new look, designed by world-renowned Barclay Buterra, who previously has only contributed his talents to private homes and estates. Several rooms have fireplaces and all feature the latest in technological advancements and high-end amenities. Additionally, all bathrooms have been completely renovated and feature impressive walk-in showers and marble-topped vanities.

Much like the rest of the resort, the function space offers the best in design and technology, with more than 15,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space available, including a variety of options with ocean views. A new Sunset Terrace features 2,000 square feet of space for weddings and private events.

The new restaurant at L’Auberge Del Mar will open in October and will combine world-class dining with a spirited atmosphere, offering guests the choice of dining under the stars in an oversized cabana side-by-side with a flickering fire pit and a lively waterfall or in a sleek dining room. Always on the forefront of culinary trends, James Beard Chef Paul McCabe will be presenting innovation at its finest and his market and farm-driven menus will feature farm-fresh produce, sustainable seafood, and hormone-free meats.

A new 4,500 square foot luxury spa will be introduced in December in a freestanding facility, creating an oasis of pampering for guests and locals alike. The spa is planned to be one of the finest in Southern California, offering the latest treatments and amenities, including environmentally and vegan friendly products and packaging, a spa suite, and an outdoor relaxation area adorned with the fire and water theme. Spa services will be available in the property’s existing spa from June to December.

Desert Oasis: Utah spas serves up scenery, hiking and relaxing treatments

It’s the red that really gets you, as in the red rock mountains and canyons and formations of the Mojave Desert landscape.

The setting of the Red Mountain Spa in St. George, Utah, about a two-hour drive through the desert from Las Vegas, is simply spectacular.

REVIEW THIS SPA NOW

New arrivals at the spa may find themselves standing with their jaws open as they take in the red mountains reaching into blue sky.

Some of the surrounding terrain may look familiar. Many a Western movie was filmed in these parts - the spa is adjacent to Snow Canyon State Park, where they shot the final scenes of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”

Given the scenery, it is not surprising that Red Mountain, as a destination spa, is known foremost for its comprehensive hiking program, which includes daily hikes at three experience levels - from beginner to advanced - to explore the red limestone rocks and spires, lava flows, caves and desert flora of Snow Canyon.

There are also excursions to hike or mountain bike to see the amazing towering cliffs of Zion National Park and the stunning sandstone pinnacles of Bryce Canyon National Park - both parks are located within an hour’s drive of the spa.

In fact, Red Mountain began in 1983 as a few rustic huts designed for hikers who wanted to tackle the desert landscape. It expanded in 1999 into a destination spa and more recently in 2006 into a fancier destination spa combining outdoor adventure and luxury pampering - with the addition of a gorgeous facility, Sagestone, located in a striking three-story geodesic dome.

The property adopted the slogan, “Find yourself between a Rock and a Soft Place,” which is just about right. You can hike and bike and do other outdoor adventure activities such as horseback riding in Snow Canyon, kayaking and rock climbing. Or you can choose to spend your time relaxing your mind, body and spirit at the 55-acre resort.

The Native American Card Reading ($150) caught my eye on the extensive menu of daily activities. And so I found myself in a small room outfitted with feathers and other American Indian tokens.

The blonde and brassy reader started our session by lighting pungent Cedarwood and performing a short ceremony where she brushed me with an eagle feather to rid me of bad spirits. She drummed and chanted - she said she learned all this from American Indians.

Once the cards came out she urged me to hush so she could “intuit.” Her reading included my love life, and even if she seemed to offer more talk about my inner spirit than practical advise, the session was at least entertaining.

But I preferred my second American Indian-inspired choice: The Four Directions Body Treatment, delivered again by a tall blonde woman, this time at the Sagestone spa.

The treatment (75 minutes for $160) embraces the four directions of the Medicine Wheel, and began with a “smudging,” again with a feather, to get rid of my negative energy. Then I was rubbed with cornmeal and tobacco for exfoliating, rinsed in a shower, had a full body massage using Cedarwood oil and a sweetgrass herbal wrap “to bring peace and good spirits to the healing.”

I reflected on little of this as I relaxed post treatment, pleasingly empty minded on a chaise lounge, staring at the breathtaking red scenery through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the spa’s relaxation room.

The Sagestone spa’s menu of more than 50 beauty and relaxation treatments also has offerings inspired by Asia and India. Separate men’s and women’s locker facilities are outfitted with steam rooms.

Fitness seekers at Red Mountain Spa will find a menu of more than 50 complimentary classes weekly, including such fun offerings as Blast from the Past, a retro aerobics class modeled on the Jane Fonda era. There are aqua classes including Off the Deep End, an invigorating deep-water workout. And there are strength classes, a variety of yoga classes and Power Pilates.

In Kundalini Yoga, I tried “to find the primordial energy at the base of the spine.” And I learned to breathe and chant “Raa Maa Daa Saa,” which means “Sun, Moon, Earth, Infinity.” It was relaxing if not involving much effort.

The spa also offers a selection of healthy living sessions - for $70, for instance, you can visit with a Motivation Coach to get you started on a fitness path.

In addition to the adventure-oriented outdoor program there are cerebral offerings such as geology and archeology walks, stargazing and Tai Chi on the Rocks, staged at sunset at Snow Canyon and accompanied by American Indian music.

“Successful Meditation” is among the enrichment lectures offered after dinner. For me, Texas Hold’em poker one night (for gifts, not money) was more exciting.

Desert-style Luxury (optional sidebar)

Red Mountain Spa accommodates up to 210 guests in 82 guestrooms and 24 new luxury villas, all done up in earthtones and contemporary furnishings with big bathrooms.

The resort boasts indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center where the classes and health consultations are held, a training center with Cybex strength equipment, cardio machines and free weights, and the Canyon Breeze Restaurant and Canyon Cafe for meals and culinary classes.

All this is located in a series of small terra cotta-colored buildings connected by paths and lava bed gardens with indigenous plants. You may see a rabbit cross your path. Newbies will need a map to get around.

Food at Red Mountain Spa is simply fantastic. Chef Chad Luethje, who was raised by vegetarian parents and has cooked twice at the James Beard House in New York, has developed Adventure Cuisine menus that include herbs from the resort’s organic gardens and wild game. It is healthy food with a Southwest slant, though you would never know it. The dishes range from hearty offerings like beef tenderloin with sweet potato pancake to Green Cuisine like roasted Japanese eggplant filled with squash and garbanzo beans. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style and include hot and cold selections. Dinner is sit-down with a full menu and accompanying salad bar.

Single travelers can sit at a communal table in the dining room. Couples, of which there are many at this spa, will have no problem finding a table for two.

No roughing it at this spa.
