Sundara Best Award Winning Wisconsin Spa Resort

May 5th, 2009

sundara-couples-spa-suiteLet’s just get one thing straight: a trip to The Wisconsin Dells doesn’t have to include water slides. It can, in fact, include so much pampering and relaxation that the sound of bellowing children — and the very thought of a water slide — is a hazy memory.

Rick Duarte is the general manager of Sundara Inn & Spa, an award-winning, adults-only resort located on the outskirts of The Dells. Sundara opened in 2003, and Duarte says that since then, the public’s perception has started to shift.

“The stigma that The Dells are solely a family vacation destination is starting to lift,” says Duarte. “Sundara allows guests to truly escape.”

Located on a 26-acre pine forest, Sundara feels more like Lake Tahoe, Calif. than south-central Wisconsin. The resort has 26 suites and 12 private villas, all designed using feng shui principles and eco-friendly business practices. The lodging accommodations are top-notch, including dreamy queen- or king-sized featherbeds, a fireplace, Bose sound systems, large whirlpools, telescopic two-person showers and three-season porches overlooking the wooded splendor.

Room prices range depending on dates and room type, so check the Web site for up-to-date pricing.

Upon arrival, most guests ditch their clothing for a thick, soft robe and sandals — both of which Sundara provides — or a swim suit.

Sundara guests are invited to swim in the heated, outdoor pool (open all year), walk the grounds, relax in the meditation room or experience the five-station ritual bath. The ritual bath is based on the ancient tradition of physical and spiritual cleansing, and allows guests to rotate between a hot and cool rainfall shower, aromatic steam room, oil-infused whirlpool and cool pool.

Sundara offers a variety of services for an extra fee. Such services include dozens of different massages — from hot stone massage to golfer’s massage — as well as makeovers, organic body wraps, river stone facials, foot rituals, thermal mud wraps, hair removal and many more. Most services run between $75 and $150.

Also, Sundara offers a “spa together series” that invites couples to enjoy side-by-side services.

The Warm Glow Massage, for example, allows a couple to have a simultaneous 50-minute, Swedish-style massage by two different therapists in an ambient room with a fireplace. The couple each pick a candle made from organic material and essential oils — there are eight aromatic choices — which is then lit, melted and used as a massage lubricant.

The therapists’ expertise in body massage and energy work is immediately apparent. Guests inform the therapist whether they prefer a light, medium or firm massage as well as any areas that are in need of attention. The Sundara therapists, however, are trained to detect — via a person’s energy — the areas of the body that are in need of massage, even if they weren’t verbally identified. This ability sorts the good therapists from the truly great.

Sundara attracts guests from all over the Midwest for many different reasons. Most people visit to relax and escape the demands of the real world, while others come to mark a milestone such as an anniversary or honeymoon. Sundara also caters to people who are healing — or trying to heal — from an emotional or physical set back.

It’s common for groups of women to stay at Sundara for a bachelorette weekend or a girls’ getaway. To appeal to more men, last year Sundara introduced The Wild Rock Golf Club, a golf course built on and around an on-site quarry. Duarte says the golf course has attracted more males to Sundara, and consequently introduced them to the spa concept.

“Once we get them on the course, they might try the spa experience and realize it wasn’t what they thought it was,” says Duarte.

Duarte says he wasn’t much of a “spa guy” prior to his employment with Sundara, but is now a firm believer that spa services help to alleviate stress and create a sense of peacefulness.

“Since I’ve been here, I’ve changed,” says Duarte. “I understand the importance of balance. When your mind is clear, and your body feels good, life is so much better.”

The Sundara experience is enhanced by an impeccable staff that’s friendly and accommodating, but the resort’s biggest strength is in the fine details. For example, a “turn down” service features an employee offering to pull back your sheets before bedtime, the body exfoliant in the shower is made from sand collected near the Dells and the complementary refreshing drinks and healthy snacks appear to be endless.

Throughout the facility, glass dispensers of cucumber-infused filter water or herbal iced tea are available. Plus, coffee, a large assortment of teas, granola and apples are always on hand.

Sundara does not have a restaurant, but has a full menu featuring seasonal, locally produced food and wines. A $14 cheese plate comes with five different types of cheese, a sampling of fresh fruits, berries and a lotus flower.

Many guests opt for room service, but there is a communal eating area.

Green practices are important at Sundara. The building was designed to be eco-friendly in many ways, from the reclaming of every drop of rain water to the drinking cups made from plants. Duarte says Sundara has many long-term goals to continue their green living commitment, including a massive, on-site garden. Sundara is a member of Travel Green Wisconsin and the Green Spa Network.

In 2006, Sundara was named the third best “favorite spa escape” by ABC’s “Good Morning America.” For five years in a row, Luxury SpaFinder Magazine named Sundara one of the 10 most romantic spas in the country, and most recently, Conde Nest Traveler announced Sundara as one of the top 38 best spa resorts, according to a readers’ poll.

However, the biggest testament to Sundara’s success is found in the guest journals, which feature pages and pages of handwritten stories of rejuvenation.

“So many times in today’s world we are rushed and stressed,” reads one entry from a Madison couple. “It’s so important to slow down once in a while and there’s no better place to do this than Sundara.”

Elaia spa open at the Hyatt at Olive 8

April 17th, 2009

Elaia spa has opened in the Hyatt at Olive 8, Seattle’s soon-to-be LEED-certified hotel — the first hotel in the city to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

A member of the Green Spa Network, a nonprofit trade organization that promotes sustainable and eco-friendly practices in the spa industry, the 15,000-square-foot spa is committed to energy and water conservation, recycling, waste reduction, and the use of natural and organic products in their services.

Elaia (Greek for olive) features 12 treatment rooms with exquisite lighting that creates a warm, honeyed glow. Each room can accommodate multiple treatments, so there’s no need for guests to shuffle from room to room for their next service. (A good thing, since the spa’s hallway looks right onto the hotel’s parking circle.)

Elaia’s Market Fresh offerings are seasonally changing services that use fresh ingredients sourced from Washington state growers. Current Market Fresh treatments include a lavender mint scrub and a white lavender clay wrap ($120 each). Look forward to a cherry mint scrub and wrap in May.

Other treatments include the Elaia Signature massage, which uses certified organic olive oil from Oregon in a massage that blends Swedish and Thai techniques (60 minutes, $110). During the 75-minute Oxygen Glow facial ($175), vitamin-infused oxygen breathes new life into tired skin.

Careful attention to detail, such as customizable music, is apparent throughout the spa, though I did notice a kink or two to work out; I was assured by the spa manager that the incongruous bottle of Ajax I spied near the nail salon will be replaced by a non-chlorinated, environmentally friendly option.

Elaia’s guests also have access to the hotel’s whirlpool and 65-foot lap pool, which are purified through a saltwater system that eliminates the need for chlorine. You can hear music even underwater, and the pool is surrounded by huge windows that look out onto blossoming trees, reinforcing the feel of an oasis in the middle of the city.

Fort Worth Texas Hotel Luxury Spa – Mokara

March 23rd, 2009

Located on the third floor of the sparkly, shiny and very recently launched Omni Fort Worth Hotel, the Mokara Spa is one of what the mothership is calling its “upscale spas.” And it delivers on upscale with soft robes you almost melt into upon arrival, a calming and comfy waiting room with an expansive view of downtown and an opportunity to hit the sauna and just linger long after being pampered.

Private rooms for massaging, facial-ing and body polishing also feel sinfully luxurious, with softer-than-soft sheets and just-right temperature, which is a big deal when you’re mostly naked. Although eight varieties of massages are featured, from basic Swedish to the signature Mokara, being nine months pregnant, I decided to try the Mother To Be. As the woman who booked the appointment said when I called, “It is 60 minutes of relaxation, which I am guessing you need right about now.”

The experience: The Mokara Spa just opened and, as expected, a few kinks needed unkinking. Nobody answered the phone the first four times I tried to make an appointment, and my first appointment was canceled due to an unexpected spa closing.

Both were handled with apologies and professionalism, though, and a massage is inevitably judged by its relaxation factor. Especially when discomfort has been a way of life for almost 10 months.

I began the Mother To Be by going over a questionnaire with my masseuse: How is the pregnancy going? What hurts? What needs TLC? What do you want from the next 60 minutes?

And with that begins the pampering.

Starting on my back (yes, at an incline, to avoid the pregnancy no-no of lying flat on your back), what I am told is an all-natural, chemical-free whipped shea butter balm is massaged into what have become cankles and extremely swollen feet. Both problems seem like distant memories after a couple of minutes, and this continues on the legs and arms.

Of course, the real test of any massage is when you flip onto your stomach and the kneading and rubbing is focused on the back. And anybody who has been or is pregnant knows there is no way to get there, or even close to there, comfortably.

Instead the masseuse had me lie on my side, gave me a pillow for support and started working on the kinks that had built up after almost nine months of carrying around another person. Then it was on to the other side. And I am not ashamed to say, I have not slept that well in two months.

The massage literature promises to use “tried & tested, safe pregnancy techniques to . . . alleviate fatigue, sooth muscle and joint pain, and improve circulation.” I just know I felt lighter and better.

I woke up just as she was massaging my temples and scalp, which were no longer begging for an Advil and then, poof, we were done way, way, way too soon.

Cost: The Mother To Be is $110 for a 60-minute massage, while a Mokara Mother To Be package, which includes massage, Moroccan Rose Manicure and Instant Revival Pedicure, is $230. A complete list of all spa services, including packages, is available online or in a brochure from the hotel.

Good to know: While adapted for each stage of pregnancy, the Mother To Be massage (like all things during these nine months) is probably best to run by your OB-GYN first. And book now, before the secret gets out about this spa and appointments are harder to come by.

Spa hours: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday

Information: 1300 Houston St., Fort Worth, 817-350-412

Spa Blended Scents – One of a Kind Personalized Perfume You Design

March 20th, 2009

Most women have what they refer to as their “signature scent,” the fragrance they’ve been spritzing their necks and wrists with for years. They, along with friends and family who can smell them coming, consider the scent all their own. But, it usually isn’t. Not even close.

When a perfume is produced, packaged then peddled at every major department store in the country, the term signature scent is about as realistic as celebrity fragrance designers stepping foot in perfumeries.

But, Jane Hendler is changing that. As the founder of Ajne Rare & Precious, a custom blending perfumery in Carmel, Calif., she’s been concocting couture fragrances for customers such as Reese Witherspoon, Kanye West and Hilary Swank for four years. Now, she brings Ajne Parfum Demi-Blend to the Spa at Four Seasons Las Vegas, making personalized perfumes a spa visit away for locals.

“When I first opened, everyone wanted the custom-blended perfumes but they weren’t dedicated to the length of time it took and the $1,500 cost,” she says. “Then I came up with the idea of preblended accords.”

Every accord contains a blend of the finest and purest essential oils, which Hendler’s partner and husband, Rex Rombach, searches high and low to find. Rose oils derive from Bulgaria and champaca oils hail from West India. Each one of Ajne’s 200 plant-distilled essential oils is free of aroma-chemicals and phthalates, making them just as friendly to the environment as your sense of smell.

Demi-Blends all start with a test of the chakras, which have become a focus of the spa industry in recent years. Each of the seven chakras represents a different energy center, ranging from communication to spiritual connectedness. Based on questionnaire answers, a mélanger — a specialist trained in blending custom perfumes — determines the weakness and strength of each chakra and which accords will aid in harmonizing them. From there, clients sniff out a process of elimination. The final few accords that remain make up the Demi-Blend unique to their needs and senses.

“The pure essential oils in our formulations actually have a balancing effect on each chakra because I divided all my fragrances into chakra categories,” says Hendler.

Bottles start at $200 for .5 oz of spray perfume. A black heart flacon dabber is $250 for .5 oz and 1 oz. of spray perfume is $300.

But, perfumes aren’t the only form the oils take. Diffusers also can be produced to fill a home, event hall or wedding reception area with a scent. In fact, Four Seasons Las Vegas contemplated holding the Demi-Blends in its bridal salon it’s so popular with new brides. Newlyweds can formulate a scent that will forever remind them of their big day and brides can give mini bottles as wedding favors.

“When (a perfume) is one-of-a-kind it becomes even more special,” says Hendler.

To schedule a Demi-Blend, contact the Spa at Four Seasons Las Vegas at 632-5302. For more information about Ajne

Las Vegas Spa – Springtime Spa Treatment

March 20th, 2009

Looking to put a little spring back into your step? As if times weren’t hard enough, that hour everyone lost last weekend because of daylight saving time has truly taken its toll on all of us. So why not feel reborn again this spring with a trip to The Spa at New York-New York?

Earlier this week, I reviewed one of the more intimate spas on the Strip and one of its blissful treatments, the Escape Stress Body Escape. For those who are dying to go back (or who still haven’t been), The Spa at New York-New York just announced four new spring treatments available for a limited time, now through April 30. Each treatment includes a free cherry blossom-scented candle guests can take home with them to try and help them escape when they can’t make it back out to the spa. After all, we all need to tighten our purse strings a bit in this economy, right?

For those desperate to get rid of those kinks in their back (and we know you have them!), the Cherry Blossom Massage is just what the doctor ordered. Indulge in your own customized massage with combined elements of Swedish relaxation and therapeutic deep tissue. The refreshing scent of cherry blossoms will accentuate the treatment. The Cherry Blossom Massage is available as a 25-minute service for $70, a 50-minute service for $125 and a 75-minute service for $185.

Or, if you’d rather help rejuvenate your skin this spring, be sure to check out the Cherry Blossom Body Treatment. The 50-minute service ($110) includes a full-body exfoliation with a Cherry Blossom scrub that’s designed to leave your skin feeling soft and smooth, followed by an application of Cherry Blossom lotion for a refreshed, hydrated feeling.

Hydrotherapy Soak at The Spa at New York-New YorkThere’s also the 50-minute Cherry Blossom Soak & Glow ($85) which lets guests relax in a luxurious Cherry Blossom-scented bath while experiencing a mini-facial. Your skin will be ready to glow by the time this heavenly treatment comes to an end! Although I haven’t tried the treatment personally, this one sounds too good to pass up!

Finally, for those who are literally looking to put some spring back into their step, the 50-minute Cherry Blossom Pedicure ($80) lets you enjoy all the classic elements of a pedicure paired with a Cherry Blossom foot and leg exfoliation, followed by a foot and leg massage using a yummy-smelling Cherry Blossom lotion. It’s just what your tired tootsies will be aching for after a long day of walking up and down the Vegas Strip–not to mention the treatment gives you an excuse to check out The Spa at New York-New York’s beautiful manicure/pedicure room.

No matter which spring treatment you end up choosing, remember to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to enjoy The Spa at New York-New York’s private sauna and steam room. There is also a whirlpool in the men’s lounge and two private hydrotherapy soaks in the women’s lounge, which female guests can use even if they don’t book the Cherry Blossom Soak & Glow for an additional fee ($45 for 30 minutes).

The Spa at New York-New York is open daily from 6:30 a.m. until 7 p.m., with services beginning at 8 a.m. It is located on the third floor of the hotel near the Empire Elevator. Call 702-740-6955 for reservations or simply visit The Spa at New York-New York’s online reservation page.

Luxury Spa Experience – Florida Spa Resort

February 19th, 2009

espa-aqualina-resort-and-sp

Few places can hold a candle to ESPA at the Acqualina Resort on Sunny Isles Beach. If you’re looking for luxury and class and a truly nurturing experience for your mind, body, and soul; don’t look any further.

This isn’t a spa bedecked in modernist trimmings and garish colors — everything at ESPA is opulent and classy and inviting. Think rich dark woods contrasted with beautifully textured fabrics, ice basins and steam rooms and specialized showers that curl inside like a snail’s shell. And besides the decor, there are the treatments. ESPA is the brainchild of Susan Harmsworth, an industry leader who has created magnificent spas across the globe from the Maldives to Tokyo, from Killarney to right here in Miami. ESPA specializes in bringing the spa experience to a new apex, and now our local ESPA has unveiled three new technologically advanced facials called Super Active. Even if you’re a seasoned pro at spa treatments, trust me — this is something worth experiencing.
The Super Active product range is designed to target specific skin conditions. The names are pretty self explanatory — there’s Calm and Soothe, Repair and Restore, and Firming Eye Contour. When Pretty in the City was invited for the Super Active experience, a little Calm and Soothe was definitely what the doctor ordered. The treatment was very different from the typical facials I’ve had, which have been typically all about examining the skin under bright lights and magnifying glasses with the intent of extracting imperfections.
“This is all about you,” explained my aesthetician, when I expressed my concern about the dim mood lighting in the room. “Just relax and enjoy the experience.” So I did. Never before has a facial felt so soothing.
Her cool hands massaged my skin, focusing on each area of my face. After a while she asked me to open my eyes and be prepared for a bright light. Holding a blacklight up close to my face, she showed me areas of discoloration. “See where those little orange dots are? That’s sebum. And where it’s a paler purple, those are areas of dehydration. Do you drink enough water?” My skin didn’t lie. Obviously I need to drink more.
My ESPA Super Active experience ended with the smoothing on of the pricey Calm and Soothe concentrate, and moisturizer. Then I was on my way. The ESPA Super Active facial was a one hour and thirty minute journey to discovering what my mind, spirit, and skin needed all along. ESPA action doesn’t come cheap. Holistic facials start at $150, and treatments can run as pricey as $445 for special massages.

Naples Grande Beach Resort Joins Waldorf Astoria Collection

February 17th, 2009

Hilton Hotels Corporation announces that the Naples Grande Beach Resort in Naples, Florida, has joined the Waldorf Astoria, continuing the luxury brand’s expansion into key leisure markets worldwide.

Situated among lush palms and balmy sea breezes in Naples, Florida’s exclusive Southwest city, along the Gulf of Mexico’s Paradise Coast, the Naples Grande Beach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection is surrounded by 200 acres of Nature Preserve. Designed to coexist with its surrounding environment of clear water, unspoiled mangrove-lined beaches and lush green flora, the resort completed a multimillion-dollar renovation in 2007, unveiling an elaborate redesign indicative of the destination’s changing face and solidifying its status as one of Florida’s premier resorts.

Following in the footsteps of recent Florida additions to the portfolio the Casa Marina Resort & Beach Club, Waldorf Astoria Collection and The Reach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection, in Key West, Florida, the Naples Grande Beach Resort is the 11th hotel to join the prestigious Waldorf Astoria Collection, as the portfolio continues to expand into key indigenous destinations.

Featuring an 18-story tower with 395 luxuriously appointed guestrooms and 29 tower suites, the Naples Grande Beach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection combines comfortable elegance with the active lifestyle evocative of Naples’ stunning setting. The resort offers an array of outdoor activities to acclimatize guests to the dazzling Florida scenery – from its Tennis Center with Har-Tru courts offering professional services managed by Peter Burwash International, to the exclusive championship golf course at Naples Grande Golf Club and including beachfront sailing, windsurfing and aqua cycling along three miles of Gulf of Mexico white sugar-sand beach.

Inside the resort all refurbished guest rooms feature a luxurious take on Floridian style while exuding the casual, comfortable elegance which has become the resort’s signature. Custom designed furniture, hand-selected fabrics and luxurious touches such as silky window treatments, plush carpeting and sumptuous bedding enrich each guestroom and suite, while oversized closets, expansive bathrooms with five fixture arrangements and separate oversized tub/glass enclosed shower combinations provide the ultimate retreat.

The 50 self-contained Bungalows, adjacent to the main resort have been completely refurbished by Bob Barry and feature design elements of relaxed gray, beige and green and Asian-inspired clean, simple lines for an exclusive, private space for guests’ relaxation. Elsewhere, the Naples Grande Beach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection offers three swimming pools and private cabanas with butler service, providing ultimate luxury and relaxation. For those guests seeking an extra level of luxury, the resort’s Golden Door Spa – the first of its kind on the U.S. east coast – features elements of traditional Japanese architecture, serene gardens, relaxation pool, individual mp3 players and a meditation labyrinth, providing an awe-inspiring yet calming environment to unwind and relax.

Ross Klein, Global Head Luxury & Lifestyle Brands, Hilton Hotels Corporation, said: “Following in the footsteps of our most recent Florida additions to the portfolio, we are delighted to welcome the Naples Grande Beach Resort to the Waldorf Astoria Collection. This resort provides the perfect balance of stunning local scenery, and indigenous local experiences and intuitive, luxurious comfort, and the renovations have given a fresh face to an already popular destination.”

The renovations also included the addition of a Strip House steak restaurant, a signature dining experience first introduced in Manhattan and featuring sumptuous silk furnishings and vintage Studio Manasse images. The Strip House offers an eclectic and design-rich fine dining space, designed by celebrated interior architect David Rockwell and featuring cuisine from acclaimed chef John Schenk. Also included in the renovations were a full redesign of the lobby and lounge space and updated meeting space – unveiling a banquet facility, the pool-facing Vista Ballroom which boasts floor to ceiling windows. With 2 further ballrooms, as well as an additional 27 meeting and breakout rooms, the Naples Grande Beach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection offers 80,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor space, an accommodating base for all occasions, from bar mitzvahs to board meetings.

In addition to the Naples Grande Beach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection, the Waldorf Astoria Collection also operates ten other properties – seven in the United States, comprising the inspiration for the brand, the legendary Waldorf Astoria® in New York; Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona; Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa in Maui, Hawaii, La Quinta Resort & Club in Southern California, as well as the Casa Marina Resort & Beach Club, Waldorf Astoria Collection and The Reach Resort, Waldorf Astoria Collection, both in the Florida Keys. Internationally it operates the 46-suite Qasr Al Sharq or “Palace of the Orient” in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Rome Cavalieri, and most recently the Trianon Palace in Versailles which joined the collection in December 08.

The company is also developing Waldorf Astoria Collection hotels and residences in key cities around the world and this year expects to launch the Waldorf Astoria Orlando in Florida, Dakota Mountain Lodge in Park City (Utah) and the Bentley Waldorf Astoria Collection in London. The Palace Jerusalem, Israel, the Waldorf Astoria Sarasota in Florida and the proposed the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills in California are also scheduled to open in 2010.
