Williston Adds Ayurveda to Medical Options

October 18th, 2007

WILLISTON — She doesn’t prescribe; she doesn’t claim to heal. Nor does Allison Branfield Morse, a practitioner of traditional Indian ayurvedic medicine, steer her clients away from hospitals.

People come to the Ayurvedic Center of Vermont, Morse said, for the same reasons she does — for a more complete appreciation of health.   Ayurveda, a system of healing that combines herbal, meditation and massage therapy, has been practiced on the Indian subcontinent for millennia.

“Translated, Ayurveda means ‘the science of life,’ or ‘longevity,’” Morse said. “It’s not about treating diabetes. It’s about getting your body in balance so you can better heal yourself.”

Her attention strayed into massage therapy. In 1999, she traveled to Kerela, in South India, to study yoga. She discovered ayurveda.  When Morse returned to the United States, she moved to Albuquerque, working and studying full time for five years in the Panchakarma Department of the Ayurvedic Institute.

Clients come to Morse for hour-long lifestyle consultations, for guided meditations or applications of herb-infused oil to the eyes, nose, ears or forehead — the “third eye” in the Hindu tradition.  She listens and watches for signs of imbalance that ayurveda might nudge toward vitality.

Holistic, inclusive approaches to medicine attracted Corinne Grimes of Plattsburgh, N.Y., to Morse’s clinic. Plagued with obesity for most of her 37 years, Grimes said ayurvedic treatments opened her eyes to options.  “After three visits I’ve figured out that my health is much bigger than what happens when I go to see a doctor,” she said. “I get it now. It’s not something I can unlearn.”  She has lost 47 pounds since January.

Another of Morse’s clients, Doug Dunbebin of Burlington, said panchakarma sessions succeeded in ridding him of a nagging, unsightly skin condition that had survived repeated treatment by steroids.

Yet Morse makes no claims beyond powers of observation and knowledge of what remedies, for hundreds and maybe thousands of years, have worked.  “I look, and I listen. I recommend, and I suggest,” she said. “I’m a facilitator. I’m giving you information. You then become your own doctor, in a way. You discover a sense of balance, and you turn it on when you need to.”
