Stoneleigh Hotel Dallas Texas Spa Getaway

September 19th, 2008

Stoneleigh Hotel offers a jet-set getaway in Dallas

As the weather cools off, head down south for a retreat for the senses. A host of haute hotels have risen the heart of Dallas. Of all the new options, the most impressive is surely the Stoneleigh Hotel & Spa.

The grande dame, located in the bustling but still bucolic Uptown area of Dallas, opened as a residential hotel in 1923 and was, in the 1930s, embellished with a penthouse and interior styling by the lauded Dorothy Draper firm in New York. The Stoneleigh stood as a center of glamour and the arts for decades, becoming a residence for people like theater maven Margo Jones and a favorite stop for a wideranging guest list including Jack Benny, Katharine Hepburn, Oliver Stone, Andy Warhol, and Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee.

Because the Stoneleigh occupies a most desirable patch of real estate, her gradual fade from glory seemed both sad and scandalous. A yearlong, $36 million redo, however, has transformed the worn old gal into a stunner that’s both sophisticated and sexy. And while you can find other classy models right in the neighborhood – the Crescent Court and the Ritz-Carlton come to mind – the Stoneleigh stands apart as a place whose legacy has long involved fashion and grace.

Book a weekend stay and see for yourself.

LUXE, AND THEN SOME: The Stoneleigh is a showplace that would be at home in Beverly Hills or New York’s Upper East Side. Acclaimed design firm Forrest Perkins played up elements of the original art deco styling, reviving its energy with new color and the occasional modern tweak that enhances rather than clashes: witness, for example, bold teal, cinnamon, aqua and ivory patterns to complement dark chocolate mahogany furnishings and platinum detail, all highlighting original crown and door moldings and enormous windows, along with fantastic tiny tiles in the bathrooms.

You’ll find pampering touches, including free Wi-Fi connection, 24-hour concierge service and room service, and free fitness studio use; in your room, an iPod docking station, Baronessa Cali olive luxury bath products, a high-def flat-screen TV, a laptop safe, a giant closet and a lighted make-up mirror.

INDEED, IT’S HARD TO THINK OF WHY YOU’D LEAVE YOUR ROOM: Of the 170 units, 57 are huge studio suites that offer a king bed at one end of the room and a sitting area with sofa at the other, separated by a large double-sided dresser topped with a TV console that swivels for viewing on either side. Penthouse suites, which open onto a sprawling rooftop terrace, were given a new polish by the illustrious designer Carlton Varney. If you don’t book one, ask if they’re open for a peek; a glimpse of the 500-year-old English oak paneling once belonging to William Randolph Hearst is a jaw-dropping sight.

SPOILED IN THE SPA: One terrific reason to wander from your room is to spend a morning or afternoon in the chic new spa, which offers everything from skin and body treatments to hair and nail services and steam/sauna rooms.

Dozens of a la carte choices exist, but it’s difficult to pick just one. If you have a lot on your schedule, opt for the Day Dreamer, which includes a cucumber body treatment and a 25-minute massage of back, neck, scalp or shoulders. Those on a more leisurely schedule can choose the “Urban Detox” deep-cleaning facial, a three-hour affair ($290). For men, this includes a skincare treatment, deep-tissue massage and manicure ($255). But the ultimate is the Dorothy Draper Sweet Escape, a six-hour event that gives you a Jet-Setter Recovery Rx aromatherapy massage, geared toward anyone familiar with travel fatigue; a body sugar scrub and body butter wrap; 80-minute facial; and an aroma therapeutic, hot-paraffin mani-pedi combo ($625).

Overkill? Perhaps, but we’d love to book it.

WHEN EVENING FALLS: Wander downstairs and take a seat where the sleek, color-dappled lobby unfolds to the magnificent bar. Big, artful light fixtures and streamlined furniture give this spot a heady feel. Libations include a Bollatini, a blend of Ketel One vodka, vermouth and a jalapeno-stuffed olive; or a Bolla lemonade, made with Patron silver and lemonade, garnished with fresh jalapeno and cucumber, both perfect alongside nibbles like tuna carpaccio and bruschetta topped with prosciutto and Parmesan. Save room for dinner from chef David Bull, whose star rose at the Driskill Hotel in Austin, Texas, where he was designated a best new chef by Food & Wine and where he won a James Beard Award nomination. At Bolla, his departure into urbane Italian cuisine, Bull’s wide-ranging menu includes first-course options such as heirloom tomato salad or beef tartare; second-course diversions such as roasted sea scallop with spinach and brown butter or risotto primavera; entree selections include veal cheek piccata with preserved lemons or charred beef tenderloin.

IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: If you’ve set aside a long weekend, you can wander nearby for all manner of distraction. Listen to a great jukebox, shoot a game of pool and nosh on a killer burger (do get the chipotle mayonnaise) right across the street at the Stoneleigh P, a legendary watering hole; walk a few doors down the street for a sensational bone-in rib-eye with truffled mac and cheese at Nick & Sam’s (ask for a table in Willie’s section); or shop for antiques at Uncommon Market, an easy walk around the corner.

Stevenswood Spa Resort Integrates Eco-friendly Amenities into “Greening” Program

Officials of Stevenswood Spa Resort, one of the nation’s leading spa resorts dedicated to creating a more eco-friendly guest experience, today announced that it has implemented its next “green” initiative with the introduction of a 100-percent biodegradable line of Environmentally Sensitive Amenities™ at its 16-acre, ocean-view Indigo Eco/Spa and resort here. The amenities include environmentally friendly liquids, soap and packaging.

“We began as a spa interested in the well-being of our guests and evolved into a resort simultaneously dedicated to improving the environment,” said Michael Webster, Stevenswood Spa Resort principle. “It was a natural extension to take our guest-focused wellness approach and expand it to the wellness of the environment. While we are small by spa/resort standards, we believe we can be a more progressive laboratory for larger resorts that have to contend with scale and bureaucracy. As we implement strong environment-oriented programs, we share it with the industry. While at the property level, soaps and liquids and their packaging may seem insignificant in terms of environmental impact, on a national level it accounts for thousands of tons of materials a year.”

Webster noted that the spa was thinking “green” long before the LEED certification program began to become popular. ”We installed Delrin Venturi Spa Showerheads in 2004, which reduced water usage by more than 25 percent, while still providing a luxurious spa shower experience. In the past 3.5 years, we now recycle more than 30 percent of our expendables, resulting in tons of recycling, saving hundreds of barrels of oil and dozens of trees annually. More than 50 percent of the products we use are either recycled or bio-degradable.”

Webster pointed out that the Environmentally Sensitive Amenities™ will have a meaningful impact on both the environment and the economy. “One ton of recycled plastic saves nearly 700 gallons of oil,” he said. “If the entire industry adapted a totally recyclable program for bathroom amenities, the savings could easily exceed millions of barrels of oil annually.

“Our goal is to help preserve the environmental health of our ‘backyard,’ the Mendocino Coast. If others do the same for their respective backyards, we will have a major impact on the global environment.”

All amenity bottles and their aluminum caps are fully recyclable and made mostly from post-consumer recycled materials. Additionally, ESA products contain minimal preservatives and labeling and are packaged in non-bleached, natural board for easy biodegradation.

Specific ESA items that Stevenswood Spa Resort has acquired include:

• Toothbrush & toothpaste

• Hair comb

• Makeup removal towelettes

• Shower cap

• Herbal shampoo, conditioner and lotion

• Peppermint mouthwash

• Shoe shine kit

• Mending kit

• Vanity pack

• Facial and hand soaps

• Q-tips

• Bath crystals

• Nail file

• Cotton balls

• Aroma body wash

“Our guests expect the Stevenswood Spa Resort to be at the forefront of environmental awareness, while establishing the highest standards of luxury,” Webster added. “Adding this product line to our amenities is a natural step for us to maintain that commitment.”

Stevenswood Spa Resort is an idyllic retreat on Northern California’s Mendocino Coast. Contemporary and secluded, this tranquil resort offers a gracious respite for travelers and locals alike. Located two minutes south of the town of Mendocino in Little River, this AAA Four-Diamond property is surrounded on three sides by State Park, and is a short walk to the Pacific Ocean. Intimate by design, elegant by nature, the lodge features luxury suites, the acclaimed Restaurant at Stevenswood, and the Five-Star Indigo Eco|Spa. A private botanical garden, Jacuzzi hot tub spas, and landscaped grounds enhance the breathtaking setting, with a backdrop of Redwood groves and ocean meadows. Southwest Resort Spas – Luxurious Accomodations Great Spas

Posh digs under the southwestern sun

What the desert lacks in natural greenery can sometimes be found via manmade luxury. Once considered a wasteland that couldn’t possibly be developed into anything resembling a deluxe destination, areas of California’s moody Mojave Desert have in recent years seen a growing number of noteworthy luxury accommodations and resorts. Bordering it on the south, Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, America’s hottest, has likewise seen a flood of travelers seeking an exotic desert experience without the need to join a Bedouin caravan in the Sahara.

All across the American Southwest, in fact, stressed and weary travelers are warming up, powering down and taking in the cacti and mountain shadows. And, whenever possible, they’re luxuriating at resorts surrounded by shifting, whispering sands and that promise secret verdant courtyards, progressive spas and down-home attitude.

For years, Palm Springs, California, has been attracting Hollywood stars and starlets with its mix of old-school class and increasingly modern amenities. But unlike other hot zones, Palm Springs offers celebrities-and the less famous-the chance to chill out.

“This is the paparazzi-free zone,” says Mark Graves, spokesperson for the Palm Springs Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. “Hollywood history has stuck around the desert, where celebrities still slip away to gated villas and inns in secluded small neighborhoods, for decades,” he adds, “and the mystique is still here.” While some resorts are punctuated with big box resorts, this desert getaway has managed to preserve a sense of history along quiet streets evocatively lined with lush palm trees.

When you want to make yourself at home on the range in this chic desert hideaway, the choices include the intimate eight-guestroom Willows. The inn sits atop a stupendous rock formation with a natural waterfall-catch the mist while dining on a superb homemade breakfast-and the rooms, like the Einstein Suite, quietly honor previous illustrious guests. When you want to get up close and personal with the desert floor, ask the concierge to call Elite Land Tours and arrange for their Hummer to pick you up for a private tour of Joshua Tree National Park. The company also organizes excursions to the mother of all earthquake faults, the San Andreas.

Korakia Pensione seems much larger than the 1.5 acres it covers. It remains the secret getaway for the Hollywood celebrity and agent crowd. Moroccan-inspired and decorated with one-of-a-kind furnishings and accessories, this setting was designed to protect the privacy of guests in spacious bungalows surrounded by romantic gardens and inviting pools.

Why pack stiletto heels from Jimmy Choo when (in these parts) you should be rounding out your wardrobe with a ten-gallon hat, Tony Lama boots and durable denims? Families seeking a vintage yet authentic dude ranch experience will find rustic nirvana at the 375-acre Smoke Tree Ranch. It was established in 1925, when Palm Springs was in its infancy. It’s a fitting place to hang one’s Stetson, with a landscape that hits like a work of art as soon as you enter the private gate off Highway 111. And though it’s just minutes from commercial hubbub and a Holiday Inn Express, it’s still worlds away from both. There are 53 comfortable guest cottages shrouded in pink bougainvillea and jasmine, and set among the intentionally preserved wide open spaces.

This ultra-private community has been attracting families for generations, thanks to its bonfires, cookouts in the nearby Indian Canyons, family movies and horseback rides. The original homeowners included Walt Disney, so it’s little wonder newcomers will find this destination to be a blast from the past. This is an all-inclusive American Plan resort, with three square meals daily, buffet style and from the menu.

If Smoke Tree is too Western for Easterners, there’s El Morocco Inn & Spa in Desert Hot Springs. This inimitable 12-room inn shed its mid-century origins when transformed by new owners into an homage to the classic film “Casablanca”. Each room is decorated to the hilt with Moroccan antiques and posters from the early 20th century. King-size beds (and one room with a round bed) are reminiscent of a harem suite at the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. There’s even an original hand-painted Moroccan tent on the grounds – “the only one in the desert,” says owner Bruce Abney. If the mild desert breezes aren’t enough to evoke an exotic trip to Fes, an aromatherapy massage and exotic essential oils might do the trick.

The Californian desert doesn’t have a monopoly on luxury lodging options. Consider the CopperWynd Resort & Spa in Phoenix, where European style meets desert deluxe. Reserve the Sonoran Amethyst Renewal Body Treatment or the Champagne and Rose Facial and you might choose to skip your morning horseback ride.

View CopperWynd Spa Deals

When he stopped by Phoenix’s Royal Palms Resort and Spa for a few days back in 2004, President George Bush didn’t have to wear his name tag. Resting at the base of Camelback Mountain, it was opened in 1926 by Delos Cooke, an avid traveler and art collector. Today’s 119 rooms, suites and casitas are in harmony with the aesthetic of the original Spanish colonial mansion, and guests are entertained with horseback riding, golf and guided hikes.

Out Tucson way, check out The Boulders Resort and Golden Door Spa in a place called Carefree (12 miles from Scottsdale) where you can hit the hiking trails day or night. A “Moonlight” hike is now on the menu, too. If you need to cool off, the Golden Door Spa has the solution with more body and skincare treatments than spots on a gecko.

So take to the desert, add a touch of deluxe, and regardless of how high the mercury rises, you’ll be on your way to a surprisingly refreshing travel experience.

ADVENTURE SPA | Arizona dietitian wants guests to maintain healthy lifestyle

Lots of spa retreats do a great job getting guests to eat right and exercise while they’re there. But as soon as they get home and unpack, it’s back to nightly dates with Ben & Jerry and other bad habits.

Devon Metz watched this pattern play out repeatedly during her years working at some of the most high-end destination spas in the country.

Ellen McGann (left) and her hiking group take a snack break. There were hikes for beginners as well as advanced trekkers.

PRICE: Devon Hiking Spa vacations cost $2,900 per person, based on double occupancy. Solo travelers tack on $500 for their own room. The price includes five nights at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, all meals, two spa services, airport departure shuttle, backpack, pedometer and other little extras.

DATES: Eight trips are scheduled this year. They are: May 23-28; June 25-30; July 11-16; July 25-30; Nov. 16-21; Nov. 30-Dec. 5; Dec. 7-12; Dec. 14-19

The 31-year-old dietitian and fitness instructor figured there had to be a better way to help guests keep a healthy lifestyle going long after checkout. Late last year, Metz began offering six-day getaways aimed at just that. Held in the sunny, Southwest city of Tucson, Ariz., Devon Hiking Spa vacations focus on nutrition and fitness in a “real world” way, Metz said.

“Most places just put a plate in front of you and you’re not really learning how to eat out and make the right choices,” she said. “We take people out to real restaurants each night and have them navigate the menu. We do a supermarket tour and learn how to really read the ingredient list.

“We try to do the same thing with exercise,” Metz added. “We’ll use a resistance band instead of heavy equipment and give them the band to take home with a list of exercises to do.”

The idea of a week away from the office hiking past saguaro cacti in the Arizona mountains, learning how to have a better diet and enjoying some relaxing massages sounded like the perfect escape to Ellen McGann. This Hinsdale banking executive deserved an escape. The 48-year-old mother had recently wrapped up eight rounds of chemotherapy and 28 radiation treatments after having surgery for breast cancer.

“I viewed it as the ultimate detox,” McGann said. “I’d wanted to do a health spa thing my entire life. I thought, ‘Why not just take a week off work and focus on myself, focus on diet, exercise and healthy living?’ “

McGann was one of 12 who signed up for the inaugural Devon Hiking Spa vacation in December. Most of the guests were women, ranging in age from their late 20s to 50s. And most were like McGann, traveling on their own. Base camp was the swanky Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

A typical day started around 7 a.m. with a half-hour of stretching followed by breakfast in the hotel. Then it was time for an hour-long class that usually revolved around nutrition. After that, everyone laced up their hiking boots and hit the trail, where people had the option of choosing between guided hikes for beginners or advanced trekkers.

Guests who wanted more of a fitness fix could take a post-hike class in pilates, yoga or strength-building resistance bands and then treat their sore muscles to a massage; two spa treatments came with the package.

In the evening, everyone got together for dinner at a local restaurant to practice what was preached.

“Every night before dinner we went over what to order, what questions to ask,” McGann said. “You do things like mindful eating exercises, where you put your fork down between every bite.

“A lot of the stuff I learned I came home and taught my husband,” she added. “We tend to go out to dinner a lot. I’m not afraid anymore to ask the restaurant for something special, like putting the sauce on the side or skipping the breading. My husband’s lost about 15 pounds since I got back.”

During her stint in Tucson, McGann tried Pilates for the first time. She liked it so much, she now does it once a week. She’s also making a weekly visit to a personal trainer.

“I’m still working on the exercise thing,” McGann said. “It’s my worst category.”

About once every three weeks, McGann gets an e-mail from Metz asking how she’s doing and whether she’s meeting her goals.

“I love the follow-up,” said McGann, who plans to show Metz her progress in person when she takes another Devon Hiking Spa vacation later this year.

McGann finished her cancer treatments a year ago this month.

She said that when you’re in the midst of battling something as formidable as cancer, “you don’t feel like you’re ever going to get on the other side . . . focusing on myself and my health during that week helped push me to the other side.”

Bridgeville PA – Sandstone Resort at Hudson Valley – $100 million indoor water park resort and spa

Find A Spa or Search the right Pennsylvania spa just for you

A 350-room indoor destination resort with a 60,000 square foot water park and family entertainment sphere was announced Monday by Bridgeville USA LLC. The company plans to build the facility, which anticipates employing 250 full- and part-time people, on 18 acres off Rt. 17 exit 107 in Bridgeville, PA.

The project has been dubbed Sandstone Resort at Hudson Valley.

“Indoor water parks are becoming very common in many areas of the country. Their popularity is largely based on the family-friendly getaways that can be had relatively close to home every day of the year in a beautiful 84-degree setting,” Richard Coleman of American Resort Management, the company chosen to operate the facility.

The resort will also include a spa featuring anti-age treatments and advanced DNA testing, a high definition 4-D theater, expanded resort amenities, acidities, shopping and several “interactive dining options.”

The company hopes to break ground this fall and open in the summer of 2009. Coleman said they are about to start seeking the local planning approvals for the project.

Ladies: What could be finer in South Carolina than great golf and spa?

March 31st, 2008

heavenly-spa-by-westin-hilton-head-sc.png

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

South Carolina golf vacation hotspots Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Hilton Head know a spa visit is an essential part of a golf trip for women golf travelers. With that in mind, we pair up golf courses women love with nearby spas.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – It’s obvious since the first gutta percha golf ball was struck – a bad slice, by the way – that men and women view the game of golf very differently.

For men, it’s all about out-driving your buddies for bragging rights, humiliating your opponents and maybe winning some money along the way. For women, it’s all about the outfits.

Just kidding. But it is true that women often consider factors different from men when choosing a golf course. For the most part, women don’t like beastly long courses or forced carries.

The same is true for post-round pursuits. Women want to refresh and rejuvenate. Men want to drink and make excuses.

This story is for the women and many of the men who are getting into spa treatments. Here are some of the best combinations of golf/spas in South Carolina:

Myrtle Beach

Women-friendly courses

• Willbrook Plantation on Pawleys Island.

• King’s North at Myrtle Beach National.

• Willard Byrd Golf Course at Sea Trail Resort & Golf Links in Sunset Beach.

Spas

• Mystic Garden Day Spa (5903 North Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, tel. (843) 449-2247) gets good reviews from women who have experienced it. The spa offers shiatsu, which is rhythmic pressure three to 10 seconds on specific points along the body’s “meridians.” They also have synchronized massage, co-ed therapists, foot reflexology and paraffin treatments.

• VanEpps Rejuvenation (417 79th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, tel. (843) 497-9699) was started by a retired physician who wanted to combine traditional spa amenities with a professional medical practice. That became known as “aesthetic medicine.”

It’s a “non-surgical, medical approach to beauty and anti-aging.” That includes “threadlifts,” non-surgical facelifts, mesotherapy, injections for fat dissolution and skin rejuvenation as well as more traditional spa techniques like massage, manicures and pedicures and waxing.

Charleston and Kiawah Island

• Osprey Point Golf Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

• Wild Dunes Resort in Isle of Palms.

Spas

The Spa at Charleston Place• The Spa at Charleston Place (205 Meeting St., Charleston, tel. (843) 722-4900) in downtown Charleston – you don’t have to stay at the hotel to go to the spa. Guests get to use the health club, with its indoor/outdoor pool, Jacuzzi and steam room.

The spa has massage, manicures and pedicures, facials and other customized treatments.

Plus, when you’re through, you have all of those great, downtown Charleston shops.

• The Earthling Day Spa (245 East Bay St., tel. (843) 722-4737), located on Ansonborough Square in Charleston’s historic, newly renovated east side, has pilates, which for those of you who aren’t hip to new spa trends, involves exercise designed for long, lean muscles while enhancing strength, agility, tone and flexibility.

The Earthling has the usual array of massage techniques, like therapeutic, aromatherapy and hot stone, as well as an “Eco Venus sugar glow” and “milk and honey envelopment.”

Hilton Head Island

• Golden Bear Club at Indigo Run.

• Palmetto Dunes, Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course.

• Okatie Creek at Sun City Hilton Head.

Spas

The Heavenly Spa• The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa (2 Grasslawn Ave., Hilton Head Island, tel. (843) 681-4000) has the Heavenly Spa, set amidst gardens, fountains and lagoons.

The Heavenly Spa “celebrates the revitalizing benefits of the region’s herbs, minerals and customs.” It has nine treatment rooms, a couple’s suite with whirlpool, including a women-only, beauty salon, locker room with steam and sauna, and men’s, women’s and co-ed relaxation rooms.

• The European Spa has an oceanside massage at Marriott’s Surf Watch resort (5 Grasslawn Ave., tel. (843) 682-3915), close to the beach at the Barony Beach Resort.Experience distinctive decors, imaginative dining, and attentive service at Renaissance Hotels & Resorts.

The spa has the usual assortment of massage, plus “balancing bliss,” a deep massage for face, scalp and body with visualization and relaxation techniques. It also has the “medi-spa” massage, which is unique to the European Spa, and is designed for people who are suffering from chronic or acute muscle or joint pain, inflammation, stiffness swelling or other injuries.

A ninety-nine per cent organically-sustainable luxury adventure eco spa and resort is due to open in May in the Yukon Territory of Canada.
