Want A Reason To Love Your Lower Belly Fat? It’s Rich In Stem Cells

Fat removed from the lower abdomen and inner thigh through liposuction was found to be an excellent source of stem cells, with higher stem cell concentrations than other areas of the body, reports a Brazilian-based study in August’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery(R), the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). This is the first study of its kind to examine whether fat tissues from different areas of the body vary in stem cell concentration.

“Adult stem cells, derived from our own tissues, hold strong promise for improved clinical therapies,” said J. Peter Rubin, MD, a member of the ASPS Fat Grafting Task Force who is involved in pre-clinical trial work on stem cells taken from fat. “The potential for healing and repairing injury or disease through stem cells, including conditions like breast cancer and reconstruction, heart failure, spinal injuries, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease is incredible. We may be able to more permanently and naturally get rid of pesky wrinkles or augment breasts with stem cell enriched fat in the future as well. Knowing more about the biology of stem cells will be of great value when we are ready for clinical trials in this country.”

In the study, 23 female patients having liposuction in at least four different body areas agreed to have their fat isolated for adult stem cells and analyzed to determine stem cell concentrations. The body areas that were liposuctioned were: lower abdomen, upper abdomen, inner knee, inner thigh, flank and hips.

The study results found a significant difference in stem cell concentrations in different areas of the body. A major finding was that the concentration of stem cells was greatest in the lower abdomen and inner thighs. Interestingly, stem cell concentration in the lower abdomen was five times greater than in the upper abdomen.

“The value of stem cells harvested through fat is the ready and ample supply available,” said ASPS President Richard D’Amico, MD. “Using stem cells will some day have very practical applications to the specialty of plastic surgery. That we may be able to generate new tissue or bone that can be used in many of the reconstructive and cosmetic procedures we do every day is tremendous.”

Stem cells are unspecialized cells that have not yet developed a specific function. Not only are they capable of self renewal, stem calls can divide and produce others that become specialized cells. Scientists and doctors theorize that stem cells will be able to repair or replace damaged or diseased cells. Clinical trials researching the potential of stem cells from fat are ongoing in Europe and Asia. In the U.S., there are many investigators doing pre-clinical trial work to meet the stringent safety guidelines the FDA sets for clinical trials.

According to ASPS statistics, more than 301,000 liposuction procedures were performed in 2007.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. Representing more than 6,700 physician members, the Society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. ASPS comprises more than 90 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Founded in 1931, the Society represents physicians certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Visit a spa in the U.S. for an ayurvedic treatment and you could be in and out in an hour. Go to a spa in India, and you’ll likely spend a few weeks being treated with a host of thousand-year-old remedies to treat health problems, prevent disease and rebalance the body. Spas like Serena Spa Private Limited in Mangalore use fresh, local ingredients, such as ground sandalwood, in their scrubs, because of their healing properties.

World’s Authentic Spa Experiences

Remember when a Swedish massage sounded exotic?

As recently as a decade ago, many U.S. spas offered fairly generic menus, counting European facials and the standard Swedish massage as their most unique offerings.

The industry has gotten more diverse and creative since then, branching out into treatments and body scrubs native to India, Korea and Thailand. But that hasn’t stopped dedicated spa-goers from roaming far and wide for spa treatments.

In Depth: World’s Authentic Spa Experiences
Experts in the industry say that, for the past few years, a small group of adventurous spa regulars with money to spend has been traveling, domestically as well as abroad, in search of spa experiences that more closely resemble their original forms. The therapies usually offer the promise of a health benefit or treatment of a chronic illness, such as a reduction in inflammation or relief of arthritic pain. But the treatments also provide a window into a different culture.

“Seeking out the true roots of a tradition is very appealing,” says Mindy Terry, president of Creative Spa Concepts, a full-service spa consulting firm. “And there’s a lot of bragging rights, too–to be able to say ‘I’ve done onsen in Japan’ or thalassotherapy in France, that’s significant to this group.”

Is Your Spa Safe?

Carolee Friedlander, CEO of the by-invitation network for women AccessCircles, has been an avid spa-goer since the ’80s, shortly after Canyon Ranch opened its first health resort in the foothills of Tucson, Ariz.
Over the years, she began making a habit of visiting spas during travels to China and Thailand, but found that most of the focus was on massages and body or facial treatments. Today, she says, there are far more experiential treatments aimed at helping you re-energize and heal.

Take, for example, the outdoor bath she took at an Amankora Spa in Bhutan during a recent trekking trip. As she looked out on Mount Jumolhari, Friedlander relaxed in a wooden tub filled with hot stones–to regulate the water temperature–and floating local herbs, a practice said to ease muscles aches.
“It was in fact a reflection of the country’s cultural, physical and spiritual values,” she says.

Friedlander isn’t the only one who has developed a taste for a touch of authenticity. Dr. S.P. Sreejit, medical director of Athreya Ayurvedic Resorts in Kottayam, India, estimates the number of customers from around the world seeking the facility’s traditional Ayurvedic and rejuvenation therapies has doubled in the past couple of years.

The therapies include shiro dhara, a cleansing and invigorating treatment that involves the careful pouring of a stream of medicated liquid or oil on the forehead for 45 minutes. While offered at many spas and medical centers in the U.S. in single sessions, this kind of Ayurvedic treatment was traditionally designed to be given in conjunction with other medicinal therapies over a period of weeks.

Environment also plays a role in the effectiveness of a spa experience. At Athreya Ayurvedic Resorts in Kottayam, guests live and breathe the therapy, surrounded by peaceful, green paddy fields and an exotic herbal garden with access to a yoga and meditation hall.

Sure, you may be able to get a version of the traditional Maldivian sand massage, which uses cool, wet sand to exfoliate the skin, in your local spa. But it likely won’t be performed on a patch of shaded sand next to the Indian Ocean, as the waves roll in and out, lulling you to sleep.

What spa treatment do you swear by? Weigh in. Add your thoughts in the Reader Comments section below.
The little things can also make a big difference when you’re experiencing a spa treatment in its country of origin. Get a fango, an Italian mud treatment, in the U.S. and you may get a light body mud wrap. Go to the source and you’re likely to have inches of mud applied to your whole body–mud that somehow smells fresh and gives you the same feeling as bathing in mineral springs.

There were no major practical differences in the Thai Yoga massages received in and out of Thailand. But the native Thai masseuse, who had been practicing the art most of his life and probably learned it from his family, performed the stretching techniques in a much more fluid manner.

But you don’t have to go all the way to Thailand for a unique spa experience. Look hard enough and just about every country has an indigenous spa ritual. In Virginia, the one-year-old Spa of Colonial Williamsburg, for instance, offers treatments inspired by healing and relaxation practices from each of the last five centuries.

The price tag associated with tradition varies widely depending on the type of overall experience you’re seeking. A Thai Yoga massage could cost $160 in a Thai spa connected to a luxury hotel, while down the street in a storefront shop, it could cost $5. A two-hour, 18th-century inspired colonial herbal spa experience in Williamsburg will run you $265.

If you feel the urge to try an authentic local healing or relaxation ritual on your next trip, look at some spa menus online and see what’s unique, ask the hotel concierge and, most important, turn to the locals for advice.
Talking to the people who work in the hotel, service your room or run nearby shops. They will know the truly indigenous places to go.
With any luck and an adventurous spirit, you may soon, too.

Sleep

The time to sleep is night. Sleep promotes proper growth. Sleep is bodily inertia with mental relaxation.

Ten-minute naps are good for Vata types. Long naps are permitted in the hot part of the summer, when days are long and nights are short. Sleeping during the day increases Kapha. Only the very weak, very young, very old, those exhausted by sex, diseased, overwork, one under the influence of intoxicants and other emotional or physical trauma should sleep longer than 15 minutes in the afternoon. Sometimes a nap before eating can help with acute indigestion.

Sleeping during the day produces Ama, unless a person has been awake all night.

Sleeping on the left side helps digestion. It promotes the functioning of the right nostril and is good for a person. The right nostril heats and activates the body and when it is working a person becomes more interested in food and sleep.

Sleeping sitting up provides the most alert sleep and is the best. Yogis often sleep sitting up.

Sleeping on the right side is relaxing, and it activates the left nostril, which cools and relaxes the body making it easier to control (which is good for Yoga).

Sleeping on the back disturbs Vata. It activates both nostrils at the same time, which produces disease by (encouraging energy to leave the body). Sleeping on the back harms the brain.

Sleeping on the stomach disturbs everything. It causes disease by obstructing deep, healthy breathing.

It is best to sleep with the top of the head facing east and the feet facing west (promotes meditative sleep). Facing south while sleeping draws energy into body.

Sleeping facing north draws energy from the body, and disturbs the body, mind and spirit. Sleeping with the head facing west causes disturbing dreams.

Before going to sleep it is best to wash the hands, feet and face. Then it is good to massage the feet with a little oil and meditate for a while to allow the negative impacts of the day to dissipate. Then do some Pranayama before sleeping.

To stop wet dreams a person can wash the feet and legs with cold water before going to sleep, as this draws energy from the genitals which reduces the chance of nocturnal emission.

It is best to go to bed only to sleep and not to read, write or think. It is best to rise immediately after awakening.

Don’t sleep in the kitchen or where food is prepared as the subtle vibrations will get your digestive tract working and disturb your sleep.

It is best to wear the least amount of cloths possible and one should especially avoid socks.

Don’t cover the face while sleeping so you can not breathe properly, otherwise a person breathes their own deoxidized air.

The bed should be at least 12 inches above the ground. Sleeping on a damp or wet surface is very bad. The level of the head should be above that of the feet.

Sleeping under the moon is very good and sleeping under the sun is very bad.

Sleeping while hungry is not good for health. Sleeping after lunch will increase Kapha and body weights.

It is especially bad to sleep during the sunset hours, as it is said to cause poverty, disturb the bodily systems and impairs digestion. Sex at this time is also bad. Reading at this time hurts the eyes. During the sunset hours there is an increased chance of having an accident during walking and driving.

How to Get Good Sleep

1. People who do more physical labor need more sleep than people who sit behind a desk all day.

2. People who are working need more sleep than a person who is retired,

3. A person over 21 should not sleep more than 8 hours. If a person does they will have an excess of Tamas (Ignorance) in the system, which will cause a person to feel tire and listless.

4. The amount of sleep needed varies according to age. The list below is for extraordinary persons and is not for the average persons, but it gives an idea of the amount of sleep one needs according to age.

a. First seven years one needs 10 to 12 hours sleep.

b. 8 to 10 years old needs 8 to 10 hours

c. In the third seven years of life a person needs 6 to 8 hours sleep.

d. In fourth seven years a person needs 5 to 6 hours.

e. In fifth seven years a person needs 4 to 5 years

f. In sixth seven years a person needs 3 to 4 hours

g. In seventh seven years a person needs little sleep

5. Persons in a service position need more sleep than a person in an administrative position.

6. If a person feels refreshed and inspired after they wake up, than they have slept a correct amount of time. If after waking up one feels tire and drained they are not sleeping the correct amount of time (usually too much). You can change sleeping time by 15 minute a day increments to see what is the proper amount of sleep one needs.

7. Sleeping during the day disturbs gases, bile, lymph and blood flow. It causes disturbances of breathing, heaviness in the head, chest regions disorders and other problems.

8. It is alright to sleep during the day for a person who has done hard physical labor, persons in pain, and for persons with nausea. Also for a person with gastric disorders, alcoholic intoxication, and persons who are fasting. In extremely hot weather it is alright to take a nap at the hottest time of the day.

9. Best time to sleep is from three hours after sunset to 90 minutes before dawn. Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

10. Going to sleep with a full stomach diverts the body’s energy from recharging the system and also causes bad dreams.

Bedtime

Vata persons should go to bed by 10 pm and sleep on their left side. Pitta persons should go to sleep between 10 pm to 11 pm and sleep on their right side. Kapha people should go to bed between 11 pm and 12 midnight and sleep on their left side.

Kapha persons like to sleep 9 hours. Sleeping this long slows down their metabolism and causes them to put on weight. Kapha persons should go to bed between 11 pm and midnight and it is best for them to wake up between 4:30 am to 5 am and then take a walk. This amount of sleep will make the body feel better and help them lose weight.

A Procreation Vacation: Spas cater to couples trying to conceive

January 30th, 2008

relaxing-romantic-spa-vacation.png

Spa Experiences / Joy of Spa / Medical Spa

This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.

Aspiring to go from being pampered to becoming parents, a growing number of couples are turning to spas to increase their chances of conceiving.

Instead of taking hormone injections, prospective mothers are submitting to acupuncture needles. Meds are being traded for massage. And in place of a cold doctor’s office, couples enjoy feng shuied rooms, cascading waterfalls, and enough New Age music to turn a pit bull into a poodle.

It’s all part of the philosophy that relaxation is the drug-free path to reproductive success.

The spa at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas offers fertility treatments, including specialized massage.

“You become a big believer when it works for you,” says Kristi Slemko, a Calgary woman who credits acupuncture for helping her to get pregnant.

Like her mother, who needed fertility drugs to conceive, Slemko was diagnosed with anovulation, a condition in which the ovary doesn’t regularly release a ripened egg. While waiting to start using the drug Clomiphene citrate, she read an article linking acupuncture with fertility and thought she’d give it a try.

Three months into the treatment, and with not a single infertility drug ingested, Slemko was pregnant.

“The lights are dim, there’s that nature-type music playing, you’re covered up with warm blankets,” recalls Slemko, now the mother of a healthy six-month-old boy. “It was just like a spa treatment, except my medical plan covered it.”

One in six North American couples struggles with infertility, according the Infertility Awareness Network of Canada. Though circumstances vary, a medical infertility treatment such as in vitro fertilization typically offers women ages 35 to 39 a 30 to 45 per cent chance of conceiving.

The Spa at Little Dix Bay in the British Virgin Islands offers “fertility yoga” and “fertility reflexology.” In Mexico, staffers at the Tides Riviera Maya take couples through an ancient fertility ritual in the spa’s “house of fertility.” At The Raj Ayurvedic Spa in Iowa, a daily three-hour program of massage, heat treatment and mild herbal enema is collectively claimed by the staff to create “the ideal internal physical environment for healing.”

Fitting with Las Vegas’s reputation for all things physical, the strip’s famed Caesars Palace began offering its own fertility program last year. Patrons of the hotel’s Qua Baths & Spa can undergo “lunaception” massage treatments, which are conducted during the full moon in the presence of a rose-quartz fertility idol.

“In the western world, we tend to approach everything with chemicals and science. So for us, it was a unique opportunity to bring some holistic healing to people,” says Jennifer Lynn, spa director at Qua, where a 75-minute lunaception package costs $420.

“Couples are always anxious to get out of the treatment room and go upstairs (to their hotel room).”

Acupuncturist Leslie Ring-Adams, whose focus as founder of Calgary’s Body in Balance is reproductive health, gynecology and obstetrical disorders, says she does not advocate abandoning medical treatments for couples trying to conceive.

“The worst thing you can tell a woman who’s trying to get pregnant is that she just needs to relax,” says Ring-Adams.

Although Ring-Adams has seen patients such as Slemko get pregnant without the aid of medical therapies, she believes a woman’s best chance is to use acupuncture as an adjunct to assisted reproductive technologies.

A 2002 study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility found the use of acupuncture to relax the uterus during in vitro fertilization cycles led to twice as many pregnancies than in cases where women did not use acupuncture.

“We say you need to cultivate the soil before you plant the seed,” says Ring-Adams. “The idea is that if you get everything ready, when the seed is planted in a perfect environment, it’s going to grow into a beautiful, perfect baby.”

Greetings From the Chopra Center

October 31st, 2007

chopra-center-la-costa-ca.png

I received this note from the Deepak Chopra and the Chopra Center and wanted to pass it on:

It has been an emotionally and environmentally turbulent time as wildfires have brought devastation on a massive scale to the people and the land of southern California. As the fires raged to our north, south and east over the past week, the Chopra Center remained structurally sound and visually unscathed except for smoke-filled skies. Over the past few days, our sleepy beach community of Carlsbad has gotten back up to speed as the once soot-filled air has been replaced with sweet, fresh ocean breezes.

Many of you reached out to the Center over the past week, sharing your healing intentions and your concern for our welfare. We are grateful for your emails and phone calls filled with warm wishes and loving prayers. Our 75 Chopra Center family members are safe and we are grateful that we can continue to work to help people throughout the world balance, heal and transform.

This week each of us was given the opportunity to determine what we truly value in this life. Never is that made clearer than when you are instructed to load up the things that matter most and drive away from your home with the expectation that what you didn’t take will be lost forever.

In this period of deep reflection, we acknowledge with appreciation the lives of our Chopra Center family members and the millions around the planet in our extended family. You are the life force that brings the daily purpose to our organization and helps make it the global source for personal fulfillment, emotional and physical healing, and the achievement of higher consciousness.

We know that the world has a great need for healing at all levels. To make this process easier and more accessible, we are offering every Namasté reader who wants to attend our Healing the Heart program February 22-24 in Carlsbad, California the opportunity to bring a friend, lover, spouse, or family member for free. In the nurturing setting of the Chopra Center, you will learn how to let go of emotional struggle, open your heart, and share the gifts you were born to express. Join us for a profound experience of our infinite capacity for healing and love.
