Spa for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

May 14th, 2009

Spas are not typically known as being green with the amount of water and energy used in excess to offer ultimate relaxation for guests’, spas are now finding creative ways to “green” themselves that are not only great for the environment, but great for their bottom line as well.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, which is a rating system created by the U.S. Green Building Council to help companies design, build, and operate their structures more sustainably.

Certifications are awarded according to points earned for things such as, design, energy efficiency and water conservation. LEED certifications entail different levels of Copper, Silver, Gold and Platinum in which only 118 buildings have received.

Here are a few spa pioneers whom have earned a LEED accolade and are setting a standard that other spas are soon to follow.

The Palazzo Resort-Hotel-Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada

Is the country’s largest LEED-certified high-rise building. Set on the Las Vegas strip, this resort opened in 2008 boasting an eco-friendly spa, the Canyon Ranch SpaClub offers an assortment of innovative spa treatments such the 100 minute Neuromuscular Therapy. This treatment is aimed to relieve tension headaches, back pain, TMJ, restricted ranges of movement and other musculoskeletal conditions. The service is conducted by a trained neuromuscular therapist, which includes referrals so you can continue treatments when you return home. All treatments incorporate organic spa products as well.

Other novel features include a 40-foot rock-climbing wall, water efficient showers, and valet bicycle parking.

Avalon Hotel & Spa, Portland, Oregon

Oregon’s first Silver LEED certification was awarded to the Avalon Hotel & Spa last August because of its energy and water conservation, recycling, and ethical purchasing efforts. Other reasons to visit this boutique hotel on the Willamette River are for its wine bar, complimentary breakfast, and 30 treatment rooms with Spa Chakra services.

The Lodge and Spa at Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, Georgia

The Callaway property sits on 13,000-acre preserve as a dedicated non-profit towards environmental education. The preserve consists of gardens, hiking trails and a butterfly pavilion. Receiving the title as a LEED certified property because it was built with recycled materials and has efficient plumbing, lighting, and air-filtration systems. The 13-treatment room spas uses natural, indigenous products inspired from the gardens that are on the property.

Gala Napa Valley Hotel & Spa, American Canyon, California

The Gala Napa Valley Hotel & Spa was the first hotel to receive the country’s Gold LEED lodging certification. Housing 132-rooms with a spa that is inspired by the wine region it calls home, offering locally sourced grape seeds for scrubs treatments and a restaurant that features seasonal, local and organic produce.

Its unique features that made this property LEED certified are its skylights that are shaped like magnifying glasses to help light interiors and real-time display of the hotel’s energy use in the lobby.

Nusta Spa, Washington, D.C.

The Nusta Spa is the first Gold LEED certified urban day spa in the country. Known as the pioneer for “spa-greening” in an urban environment it received this certification from its energy and water-saving features and waste reduction strategies. Sourcing only organic products along with its signature skincare line that contains sustainable, organic ingredients.

Hotel Terra Jackson Hole, Teton Village, Washington

The Hotel Terra has earned a Silver LEED certification by using an advanced water purification system that purifies wastewater and releases it back into the surrounding land, energy-saving fixtures, nontoxic paints and cleaning supplies. Refresh Laser Spa Opens in Denver Colorado

February 18th, 2009

refresh-laser-spa-denver-co

Refresh Laser Spa, specializing in non-invasive anti-aging aesthetic laser treatments, announced the grand opening of its spa in Denver.

“We are excited to bring the very latest laser technology to Denver,” remarked owner Kimberly Hall. “What makes us stand out is that we offer each client personal, individualized treatment, and our cutting edge lasers provide the very best result with minimal to no ‘downtime’.”

Refresh Laser Spa offers Elite laser hair removal, MediDerm Laser ReGenesis Therapy, teeth whitening, and many other laser aesthetic and skin care services. Most importantly, the spa features two revolutionary aesthetic services: SmoothShapes from Eleme and the Affirm CO2 fractional laser from Cynosure.

The spa is the first provider of the SmoothShapes system in Denver. Used by Dr. Patricia Wexler and other top dermatologists, the system was created for longer-lasting improvement in dimpled skin known as cellulite. More than 85 percent of women will develop cellulite at some point in their life, and it can’t be controlled or improved through diet or exercise.

“After evaluating the technology and the clinical results, we found that SmoothShapes is an effective treatment for cellulite,” said Hall. “Patients enjoy it because it frees them of cellulite without downtime, discomfort, or side effects.

The unique combination of laser and dynamic light therapy, in addition to contoured rollers and suction, give results that provide longer-lasting cellulite reduction, without the need for monthly maintenance.”

SmoothShapes, a new pain-free treatment, uses a combination of dynamic laser energy and mechanical manipulation to rejuvenate collagen and improve the appearance of cellulite.

“Patients of every age are concerned about this problem, but until recently we’ve seen technology that wasn’t specific for treating the enlarged fat cells and inflexible collagen that contribute to cellulite,” explained Hall.

“SmoothShapes actually liquefies the fat in cellulite areas and moves it out of the body via the lymphatic system resulting in smoother, tighter skin with improved appearance of cellulite.”

CO2 fractional micro-ablative laser resurfacing is the ground-breaking method for non-surgical facial rejuvenation and resurfacing. For micro-ablative laser resurfacing, Refresh utilizes the Cynosure Affirm CO2 laser; Cynosure is a leading developer and manufacturer of light-based aesthetic and medical treatment systems.

“Affirm Fractional CO2 can smooth deep wrinkles, coagulate tissue to tighten and firm skin, and make patients look and feel younger in as little as one session,” said Hall.

Delivering two treatments in one—skin resurfacing and collagen regeneration and rejuvenation—the laser can also treat significant sun damage, keratoses, poor skin texture, age spots, hyper-pigmentation, and a wide variety of other challenging skin conditions.

Refresh Laser Spa is proud to offer Denver’s finest facial and skin rejuvenation, hair removal, laser aesthetic treatments, and skin care products available today. The highly trained, medically supervised and certified staff ensures patients’ privacy in an intimate spa atmosphere. Dedicated to providing complete and full service care for patients’ skin, Refresh offers the highest quality skin care products and monthly educational seminars.

Telluride Colorado Spa – Aromatherapy Day Spa Stress Relief Pay what you Can

December 15th, 2008

Every day bad economic news pours out the radio, and right now it’s filling the air in Aromatherapy — bailouts, bankruptcies, riots — right along with a delicious smell from the scented candles.

This eccentric upscale spa, which also sells microwavable plush toys and calming teas, seems perfect for this eccentric upscale town.

But — at least today — it’s also empty.

Business is down as much as 50 percent, owner Michelle Davis says. In tough times, massages and spa treatments are the first to get waxed.

Davis and her employees think that’s a shame, since they believe massages keep a body healthy and out of the doctor’s office.

“I got into this business to help people,” Davis says.
And so, for the foreseeable future, Aromatherapy is responding to the drastic recession with a drastic (and generous) move of its own.

It’s burning its price sheet right along with its scented candles.
No longer are pedicures necessarily $40, Brazilian waxes $85, and massages $125.

From now on, services are on a sliding scale. It’s “pay what you can.”
“Having nobody walking in the door isn’t helping anybody,” says Davis. “So let’s reach out a hand and say, What can you afford?”

Clearly, people can’t afford what they once could. A sign on the window advertises “20 percent off everything.”

This is a new program, and Davis isn’t sure exactly how it will work. But you can tell Aromatherapy has always tried to go out of its way to be nice.

“Be kinder than necessary,” a note above the cash register says, “everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.”

Davis is a thin, blue eyed blonde who is New York-excited in the best kind of way. She talks with her hands and interrupts other people’s conversations to tell stories about cabbies’ kindness. She wrote an e-mail to Barack Obama about friendliness. She wants second homeowners to open their empty houses to others. She rails against money hording and negativity and fear. She fights the recession with hot rocks and scissors.

“Maybe people need to get that haircut to get that job,” Davis says. “Maybe they’re feeling depressed, and we can do energy work for them.”
It helps depressed people to have their ki balanced or their Chakras rotated.

Clients feel better afterward, Davis says. Harried, yogurt-stained moms tell her, “I didn’t know how good it would feel to lie down and let someone take care of me for an hour.”
Her dozen or so employees are on board, she says, though it remains to be seen how this new tactic will affect their salaries.

Jasmine Poulton has worked in massage for six years, and Megan Rood has massaged an Olympic gold medallist.

Now more than ever, they say, their clients spill their troubles all over the massage table, talking about how intently they watch CNN and worry about their retirements.

Much of this downturn is Wall Street’s fault, and Davis has a special loathing for Wall Street’s greed and misdeeds. Before she came to Telluride, she worked as Wall Street analyst specializing in high end retail, basically advising clients on which companies to invest in.
“As I grew as a human being I found out that my own personal values were not in alignment with Wall Street,” she says. “Wall Street is not about helping people.”

Now Davis is doing what she can to restore some of the faith America lost to CEOs who jacked up their salaries as they bankrupted thousands. The folks at Aromatherapy trust people to be honest about how much they can really afford, and not swear they have $1 for a 90 minute massage.

“It’s part of being a human being,” Rood says, “being able to trust each other.”

Davis is hoping that, at least in the near future, maybe just for an hour or so, we can all relax.
