Hawaiian Hot Spas 2009

April 16th, 2009

Two Hawaii hot spots have been named to Condé Nast Traveler’s Hot list for 2009.

The Royal Hawaiian hotel has been named a hot hotel and the spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua on Maui made the hot spas list.

The list features hotels, restaurants, spas and nightclubs chosen by the travel magazine’s editors. Most are new establishments.

The Royal Hawaiian has “reclaimed its past glory” with its recent $50 million renovations, the magazine said.

The Ritz-Carlton spa was noted for its large number of treatment rooms and private areas, so the spa never feels crowded.

Full reviews of each hotel, restaurant, nightclub and spa will be in the May issue of Condé Nast Traveler, available April 21.

Maui’s Honua Kai Resort & Spa Opens January 2009

December 22nd, 2008

Honua Kai Resort & Spa Set to Open on Maui in January 2009
318 Guest Suites Available for Vacationers; Additional 310 Suites to Come Online in 2010.

Honua Kai Resort & Spa, Maui’s newest luxury beach resort, is set to open January 2009 on Kaanapali’s North Beach.

Developed by Maui Beach Resort Limited Partnership, a joint venture of Intrawest, Ledcor and J.P. Morgan, and managed by Intrawest Hospitality Management, Honua Kai Resort & Spa offers a uniquely contemporary Hawaiian experience.

The full service resort and spa is gently placed oceanfront amid lush gardens, water-rich landscaping, and a beach walking path offering resort amenities and services. Nearby activities include convenient access to championship golf courses, restaurants, ocean sports and cultural attractions.

Situated on 38 oceanfront acres of pristine North Beach Kaanapali, one of the island’s best snorkeling and dive beaches, Honua Kai Resort & Spa is a master plan of resort accommodations situated in two
U-shaped buildings with ocean and mountain views, lush landscaping and expansive open spaces. The openness is mirrored in each of the 628 one-, two- and three-bedroom guest suites that are fully-equipped, spacious and homelike with luxury resort services. More than 70 percent of the suites have ocean views spanning the islands of Lanai and Molokai across the ocean channel.

Two interior color schemes reflect the contemporary Hawaiian style architecture and décor. The cool, restful shades or the warm, textural earth tones inspired by Hawaii’s natural beauty establish a vision for the new and well-appointed accommodations including full luxury kitchens featuring granite slab countertops, stainless steel BOSCH appliances and warm, hard-wood cabinetry. The kitchen is stocked with housewares. A full-size stacked washer and dryer is located near the kitchen.

The living space has a queen sofa sleeper, lounge chair, 42” flat screen television with Bluray DVD player, wireless internet access, dining table and chairs. In the bedroom, a king bed is topped with plush white linens and a decorative bed runner where custom bedside tables and a woven headboard capture the spirit of island décor. A 37” television in the rooms make for lively entertainment, while frameless glass shower enclosures and granite countertops in the bathrooms are quality finishing touches. Contemporary wall art and lighting fixtures complete the look.

The living areas are enhanced with expansive covered lanai separated from the indoor space with the NanaWall system of sliding glass walls that open up the room views and when pushed back erase the boundary between interior and exterior areas for true island living.

“While Honua Kai Resort & Spa’s design is open and generous in space, the guest experience will be friendly and warm-welcoming,” said Ed Sowers, general manager. “We know Honua Kai guests want a connection and a real experience on vacation. Our guests will be treated to surprises and memorable encounters with our staff and host culture.”

“Many of the programs we have in place will provide an interactive vacation experience. Our dunes preservation program and artist initiative are creative, and we are in the process of redefining luxury-level room service with noted Maui chef James McDonald. We look forward to sharing these innovative experiences with Honua Kai guests.”

Honua Kai Resort & Spa will open in two phases as follows:

January 2009 – Hokulani building opens (318 guest suites, lobby café, pool, fitness center)
Spring 2010 – Konea building opens (310 guest suites, lobby café, beachside restaurant, two pools, spa)

A Playground Diverse in Recreation and Relaxation
With 38 acres to work with, designers had room to be creative. An imaginative aqua network of pools, hot tubs, natural pond bridges, waterslide, waterfalls and fountains designed by Pacific Aquascapes in conjunction with landscaper PBR Hawaii allows for privacy and play.

The formal pool has an infinity-edge lap pool with featured terraced lounge seating and semi-submerged aqua lounge chairs and jacuzzi. The family pool has a sandy bottom, one-hundred-and-twenty-foot waterslide and cascading waterfall. Natural lava rock forms an elevated jacuzzi. The third pool, the river pool, features a meandering “river” that flows through smaller swimming holes and playful waterfalls. Two quiet zones have aqua lounges and covered cabana areas for relaxation. All pools have ocean views.

From tall coconut palms to fragrant gardens bursting with flowers for the picking, 38 acres of lush landscaping establishes Honua Kai’s distinctive character. Many varieties of tropical and native Hawaiian plants and trees provide color, fragrance and beauty to the Resort’s tranquil setting. Mature coconut palms and colorful flowering trees such as gardenias and plumeria dot the landscape surrounding the property. And green space is maximized for a sense of grandeur.

Disney to open Spa Resort Hotel Complex in Oahu

December 6th, 2008

Disney unveils resort hotel, spa for Oahu
Seventy years after his first ride on Hawaii surf, Mickey Mouse is finally coming back to the islands.

Disney’s plan for a Hawaii hotel complex is far from another Disneyland, both in distance and concept.

But Walt Disney Parks and Resorts’ first venture in the islands will add 830 hotel and vacation time-share rooms, a fantasy-laden water play area and an 18,000 square-foot spa to the rapidly expanding Ko Olina resort on West Oahu.

The complex is expected to be complete in 2011.

A detailed scale model of the complex was displayed at a news conference with Disney officials and Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann.

It’ll be the first such complex for Disney away from a theme park, combining a 350-room hotel with 480 vacation villas on one of Ko Olina’s four man-made lagoons, which already feature a Marriott hotel and timeshares, a luxury condominium project and wedding chapels.

“We plan to offer the opportunity for our guests to vacation in a completely new way, very different than they do at our theme park resorts, when they come here to Hawaii – to be surrounded, to discover Oahu, to discover the Hawaiian Islands,” said Disney resorts chairman Jay Rasulo.

The resort is expected to hire 1,000 “cast members,” Rasulo said. Many will come from Oahu’s relatively low-income Leeward Coast.

He noted that one of Walt Disney’s earliest films, “Hawaiian Holiday” of 1937, featured Mickey on a surfboard in the islands.

Disney has several themed resort hotels near Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida, but has never built a hotel and time-share complex that will stand on its own.

Rasulo had said there were no plans to expand the resort into a theme park.

The timeshare units will be part of the 350,000-member family-oriented Disney Vacation Club, which has eight other resorts.

Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage

A healing massage used by the ancient Polynesians, the Hawaiian lomi lomi begins with stillness and a blessing, followed by a rub-down and stretching of the body that’s meant to flow in waves over you. Practitioners, who often work in pairs, may hum or dance the hula to enhance the experience and help you re-energize. Try it at the Anara Spa, part of the Grand Hyatt Kaui Resort & Spa.

The Wyland Waikiki Opens New Spa

The Wyland Waikiki, Hawaii’s only art-design hotel in the heart of Waikiki, welcomes Spa Pure and Spada Bar and Restaurant as its newest tenants to the 403-room property at 400 Royal Hawaiian Avenue.

“The addition of Spa Pure and Spada have brought a new energy to The Wyland Waikiki and round out the guest experience at the hotel,” said Robin Graf, general manager of The Wyland Waikiki. “The response from our guests, visitors traversing the neighborhood and residents thus far has been extremely positive. It’s great to know we’ve brought something new and exciting to this ‘off-the-beaten-path’ side of Waikiki.”

Spa Pure , a new day spa, opened this month and offers guests a full menu of massage services and treatments, including in-room and poolside offerings ranging from relaxing deep tissue therapy to shiatsu, four-hands, and foot massages. Spa Pure, with four treatment rooms, is also the first and only facility in Hawaii to offer Ganban Yoku stone table treatments, a special therapy made famous in Japan that cleanses and detoxifies the body.

Another unique experience exclusively offered at Spa Pure is the Ocean Massage, combining the elements of water, salt, wind, and weightlessness to restore balance and comfort to the shoulders, lower back, and feet. The treatment involves gentle, non-strenuous, and flowing therapeutic stretch positions while supported by the buoyancy of the water in a specially heated pool. Experienced therapists facilitate the movements and in stable floating positions apply shiatsu pressure for an incomparable healing massage. Through this exercise, transcendent weightlessness, effortless grace, and undisturbed perfect relaxation are achieved.

In celebration of Spa Pure’s opening, The Wyland Waikiki is offering a “Room and Spa” package starting at $269 per night (excluding tax) through December 21, 2008, which includes accommodations and complimentary room upgrade (upon availability), a signature Ocean Massage treatment for two, and an Ocean Essence Lotion Mist spa amenity.

A minimum three-night stay is required, special rate cannot be combined with any other offer, and package is subject to change and availability.

“Spa Pure will offer our guests some of the most advanced and innovative techniques and services available in the health and wellness market today,” Graf said. “It’s all part of our effort to provide a unique experience that can’t be had anywhere else.”

The Wyland Waikiki is also excited to announce the opening of Spada Bar and Restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner on the lobby level located on the corner of Royal Hawaiian and Kuhio avenues. The restaurant features intimate indoor and al fresco-style dining and a diverse Northern Italian inspired menu crafted by Executive Chef Tony Domingue, a graduate of the International Culinary School in Houston, Texas who has worked and trained under some of America’s top chefs, including Fritz Gitzchner (Houston Country Club), Scott Bryan (Veritas in New York) and Scott Tycer (Aries in Houston, Texas).

Spada’s breakfast menu offers a selection of morning favorites including Eggs Benedict, Salmon Benedict, a variety of Omelettes, Spada Scrambles (scrambled eggs served on a croissant with choice of breakfast meat, spinach, or artichoke), and fresh seasonal fruit.

The lunch and dinner menus are packed with flavor offering traditional antipasti, insalate, pizzas, pastas, and classic Italian entrees featuring chicken, pork, beef, and fresh seafood. Menu highlights include Lombata Di Maiale (pork tenderloin served with a port sun-dried cranberry reduction), Filetto Di Manzo (filet mignon toped with sun-dried tomato basil mascarpone), and Pesce Del Giorno (fresh fish of the day).

Rounding out the menu is a selection of dolce (desserts) highlighted by Gelati Misti (gelato or sorbet), Budino Di Pane (vanilla spiced bread pudding), and Tiramisu (homemade ladyfingers drizzled with espresso and frangellico, layered with mascarpone cheese, and cream).

Spada Bar and Restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner:

* Breakfast – 7:00 to 10:30 a.m.

* Lunch – 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

* Dinner – Sunday through Thursday from 5:30 to 10:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 5:30 to 11:00 p.m.

Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling the restaurant directly at 808-931-6222. Validated valet parking is available.
