Day Spas are key to stress reduction

May 5th, 2009

Spas have long been considered a haven where the very wealthy go to pamper themselves.

But since the economic downturn, they’ve morphed into something more — a place where overly stressed jitterbugs worried about job stability can go for a few moments of unadulterated relaxation.

That’s what Laurie Mancuso, owner of Bellus Tu Day Spa in Kings Mountain, said she has been seeing for months. Instead of more expensive treatments, folks are opting to fit on-the-go facials and quickie rubdowns into their schedules.

“People are so stressed out that they’re not sleeping, and they want to know what they can do without taking Tylenol PM,” said Mancuso, a former nurse and licensed aesthetician.

It’s a national trend. A recent article in The New York Times said that weekly traffic to the “stress-management” category of Spafinder.com has doubled since the summer.

“It’s not just a luxury anymore. It’s not just for rich people, it’s for everybody,” said Kevin Jones, a massage therapist at Bellus Tu. “More and more people are coming in and their biggest complaint is stress. But during a massage, they can lay there and relax for an hour while the stress of everyday life just melts away.”

The economy is a constant topic of conversation at Spa South Salon in Gastonia, owner Jack Ward said. Ward said that all of their spa services have done fairly well, even in this economy. He said that’s because people are using spas as an escape from all of the doom and gloom they’re hearing about.

“You can get a $25 manicure and have someone massage your arms much easier than you can more expensive services like new clothes and new cars, those things we used to do to reward ourselves,” Ward said.

While any spa treatment can be relaxing, Ward said, he recommends a massage to work out the tension in the neck, back and shoulders for a person under extreme stress. Mancuso said she always recommends regular facials, especially for women, who tend to show their stress in the form of acne and bags under their eyes.

And treatments go beyond the actual 30 to 60 minutes regular folks are spending at spas. Ward touted the longer-term benefits massage treatments can have in encouraging general relaxation.

Jones added that it’s important to educate clients on inexpensive things they can do at home to stay relaxed after their visit — sleeping with pillows under their knees to help alleviate lower back pain, performing quick stretches as they enter doorways, placing ice cold green tea bags or sliced cucumbers on their eyes and carrying simple tote bags instead of heavy, oversized purses.

“Most people can’t afford to come here every day,” Jones said.

Still, an occasional trip to the spa can be worth the therapeutic benefits of a treatment and the unbiased ear of a therapist, particularly during troubled times.

“Most people can’t afford to come here every day,” Jones said.

Still, an occasional trip to the spa can be worth the therapeutic benefits of a treatment and the unbiased ear of a therapist, particularly during troubled times.

“At a local day spa environment,” Ward said, “there’s a reasonable enough cost associated with treatment that most individuals are still able to afford it.”

Benefits of Massage

Massage has been found to have several benefits, including:

- Enhancing general health, such as improving circulation of blood, relaxing muscles and improving joint mobility, and encouraging general relaxation.

- Alleviating problem conditions like general muscle tension and aches, muscular back pain and tension headaches.

- Relieving stress by triggering the relaxation response, relaxing tense muscles and reducing anxiety levels.

Never Had A Massage? Here’s What You Need to Know

Here are a few tips to help make your first visit comfortable.

Modesty. You’ll be draped with a sheet or large towel. You may choose to be totally or partially unclothed and private areas should be covered at all times.

Talking. Some people need silence to relax, while others prefer a more social interaction. Always give the therapist immediate feedback if you experience any discomfort.

Oil. Oil, lotion or another lubricant is commonly used to allow the therapist’s hands to slide over the skin. Make sure your therapist is aware of any allergies you may have.

Payment. Payment is usually due immediately before or after the session. Be sure to check when you schedule your appointment. Also check to see if your insurance covers therapeutic massages.

Tipping. Tipping is common in places such as health clubs, beauty salons or resorts.

Gender. The gender of your massage therapist is mainly a matter of personal preference and comfort.

Pink Ribbon Spa Day Head to Toe Day Spa North Carolina

February 17th, 2009

The folks with afternoon appointments at Head To Toe Day Spa on Feb. 22 will get more than just the free services they signed up for.

WANT TO PARTICIPATE?

WHAT: 12th annual Pink Ribbon Spa Day for people who have undergone cancer treatment within the past year.
WHEN: Noon-5 p.m. Feb. 22
WHERE: Head To Toe Day Spa, 1970 Eastwood Road in Lumina Commons
COST: Free, if you have undergone treatment for cancer within the past year
TO REGISTER: Call Head To Toe Day Spa at 256-3370

Heartfelt support and a caring touch will accompany the beauty treatments or massages for cancer patients who participate in the 12th annual Pink Ribbon Spa Day.

As Helen Strickland, a participant in last year’s Spa Day, put it, “I could really feel the energy from the lady who did the massage. I felt like she was praying for me.”

Head To Toe will close its facility to the public from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 22 and open it to people who have undergone cancer treatments within the past year. Participants may select any one of the following: manicure, pedicure, facial, therapeutic massage, makeup application or scalp treatment followed by a shampoo and styling. Or they can opt for a life coaching session with Ali Barnard, a graduate of iPEC Life Training school.

They will be worked on and taken care of by the Head To Toe Day Spa staff, who will volunteer time and services.

Strickland also pointed out that another real benefit of the day is the chance to meet other women who have gone through cancer treatment, hear their stories and get to know them.

“There is a camaraderie among us,” she said.

The Pink Ribbon Spa Day was conceived by Barnard and Lynn Gibson, Head To Toe Day Spa co-owner along with her sister, Lexanne Bryan. Barnard and Gibson came up with the idea in 1998 and have held this special day every year since.

The day has a personal meaning for Barnard, as she is a cancer survivor, although she refuses to use that term. She says, “I don’t consider myself a survivor because I never thought of myself as being in a war. I prefer to think of myself as a work-in-progress.”

On that first Spa Day in 1998, 35 women participated. Last year, the spa had 90 reservations, and organizers anticipate at least that many this year.

Vanessa James, a staff member who has volunteered at every Pink Ribbon Spa Day, said there is “good, positive energy all day long.” When asked which services are the most popular, she said the pedicure, facials and massage top the list. But that is probably because, as Strickland jokingly pointed out, “Not too many of us need a haircut!” All agreed that the women who participate have an upbeat, positive attitude. And, obviously, a good sense of humor.

In addition to their free service, the participants will also enjoy a catered lunch, courtesy of Tommy Mills and Little Pond Caterers.

Ashville NC Spas Jouin together to Establish Spa Standards

January 15th, 2009

Broght to you by Spavelous

The seemingly powerful healing nature of the mountains is one of the reasons behind the legion of spas in Asheville, local owners said.

For centuries, people have been flocking to the region to take advantage of its natural rejuvenation properties, making the city home to numerous relaxation destinations.
“Asheville has a long history in the healing art,” said Ilana Craig, co-owner of Innovative Spa Management, which owns three local spas. “People used to come here to take in the good air when tuberculosis was prevalent in the country.”

The local culture of Asheville is what sets its spas apart from those in other cities, spa-goers said. The region’s focus on organic products and locally grown food has made its way into spas. At Spa Theology, customers can enjoy an organic orange blossom scrub made with some locally grown ingredients.

Frequent spa customers also said that Asheville spas seem to be more focused on making sure the customer feels relaxed beginning the moment they set foot in the spa by using the art of Feng Shui to arrange furniture and decorate their facilities.

“I think the ones around Asheville might be a little more focused on health and wellness instead of beauty,” said Jen Charlton, owner of Sensibilities Day Spa. “Here even our skin care, we are very focused on the wellness side. It’s definitely very popular because of the greening of day spas.”

The spa industry has gotten so big in Asheville that local owners are thinking of creating an association in order to maintain customer standards, network with other spa owners and better understand the nuances of the industry.

“I think probably the biggest reasons we would do that is to just protect consumers,” said Cristy Patten, co-owner of the Spa at Biltmore Village. “I think when you establish a standard of excellence, you can ensure the continuous elevation of professionalism and quality.”
