No Reason Given For Closure, Customer Says

Sacramento CA Sona Med Spa closed abruptly last week, canceling client appointments and leaving hundreds of clients — some who paid thousands of dollars — stinging.

So far, the Call 3 Problem Solvers have received five complaints about Sona Med Spa shutting down.

Tammy Harris and her sister, Sherry Cioli, both prepaid for laser hair removal services at Sona Med Spa. Both spent more than a thousand dollars, and both women got calls from the spa last week, canceling their appointments.

Harris said she initially paid $4,500 and has only had about a third of the services.

No one told the sisters why the spa was canceling their appointments.

But the sign on the door at the Howe Avenue office said the spa is closed.

The lawyer for Sona Med Spa’s owner said the business is filing for bankruptcy because it was expensive to run and never profitable.

Part of the expense, he says, was the highly trained registered nurses who performed many of the treatments.

Harris said she was told one of the clinicians was a registered nurse, but she never saw any of the person’s credentials.

State law says only doctors, physicians assistants and registered nurses can use lasers to remove hair, spider veins or tattoos.

Sona’s lawyer says registered nurses did the treatments under the supervision of a licensed doctor.

Harris said ultimately, she would like the services, if she can’t get the services, she’d like a full refund.

That request will likely be up to the bankruptcy court, as the two women and other clients will become creditors.

Sona Sacramento owes $150,000 in past due fees to its corporate office. The office said if it collects any of that money, it will put it in a pool for clients to receive treatments from other spas, or partial refunds.

Before you go to a med spa, check it out, and ask about training and experience. In addition, ask for names of nurses or others who will do the procedures so that you can check their credentials online.
