How did the business get started? In April and May 2008, I was reading a magazine and it mentioned how popular kid salons were becoming. So I thought I’d give it a shot and opened for business in July 2008.

What is your background? I graduated from cosmetology school in March 2005. Right before I opened Spa Fabulous, I worked at Renaissance Hair Design.

What are your biggest challenges as a business? The economy and competition. I try to offer different things to set us apart from other salons, such as birthday parties.

What’s your business philosophy? As long as your customers are pleased, you’re sure to go far.

What issues are affecting your industry? With the economy being down, everyone is pinching pennies. In our line of work, some of our services are needed, but it’s mostly a luxury.

What are the factors that make your business successful? Offering parties here at Spa Fabulous is a big hit. Girls of all ages can come in groups and get pampered together. For the younger generation, we have a pink glitter runway for their very own fashion show.

How do you handle competition? I try to be different and have something nobody else has.

What is your advice to someone thinking about opening a business? When someone tells you it’s hard, believe them. I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into, but now that I have done it, I love it. I am learning a lot about business as well as myself.
