Why did you start your business?

I opened this business after seeing a need for quality, updated nail services. Now, ladies don’t have to travel out of town to receive the same services they get at Upscale Nail Spa. The beauty industry is constantly changing, and many clients are not aware of these changes because their nail technician does the same thing they have been doing for years.

Is there anything unique about your business that makes it different from the competition?

We use professional products only for all nail enhancements, manicures, pedicures and body wraps. We have more than 100 hand-painted nail art to choose from and more than 400 polish colors. We are continually learning and attending trade shows, where we take classes on new techniques and products. Our prices are competitive and affordable.

What challenges do you face in business?

Our main challenge is client education. A vast majority of women are used to painful nail services. We teach them and show them that getting your nails done should be a relaxing time not a time of pain. We explain to our clients every product that we are using on them and why. We teach them about choosing quality nail salons – be it with us or anywhere else. We also teach them about cleanliness in a salon and our sanitation procedures.

What do you like about your business?

I love the look in a client’s face when she looks at her hands and sees them beautiful. Also, when they come back and tell me all the compliments they got. Women love compliments; it raises their self-esteem.

Venus Salon And Spa At Your Desire

Salon customers want to feel relaxed.
They also expect everything to be clean – as in, bacteria free. That is especially the case when nails are involved.

All of that is covered at Venus Salon and Spa.
Five smiling women – all of whom look as if they get their own regular spa treatments – are the first thing a customer sees when he or she enters the shop.

The Dominican Republic-born stylists have combined for more than 50 years in the business. They specialize in ethnic hair, acrylics and gels and body waxing.
“We have worked together before,” said Ylaris “Lilly” Guzman, 40, who is one of the hairdressers, “(but) this is a new venture for all of us.”
The salon is owned by Anna Dominguez, 43, the eldest of the four sisters.

She and Guzman worked together at another salon in Spring Hill, but wanted to open and manage one of their own. Their dream was realized June 9.
Already they have established a loyal clientele, which keeps growing by the week. They said they have seen no difficulties growing their business in spite of the lean economy.
“Since we’ve started, it’s been very good,” said Anna Dominguez. “We get more business every week.”

Mayelin Dominguez, 28, is a nail technician, along with Guzman’s daughter, Penelope, 18.
Diana Dominguez, 38, works part-time.
The shop has four hair stations, three sinks, three nail stations and four steam machines for “deep treatments.”

“It’s like a facial for your hair,” said Guzman.

They use a multitude of products, including Redken, and even have shampoos designed to stop hair loss, said the owner.
The inside of the salon includes a green color scheme with a partition between the hair and nail stations. In the rear is a room for body waxing.
Ninety percent of their clientele is female, but they do cut and style hair for male customers, Guzman said.

“We do it because we love it,” she continued. “It’s not something where we go and have to do it to make a living. When you do your own thing, you can add your own touch.”

Ginger Smith gets a wrap on global business

For this episode of Word on the Street, we present the tale of a young woman from Niceville who has found a unique niche in the realm of global biz.
And yes, Ginger Smith of Slender Smith’s Day Spa & Salon has truly gone global.
Smith graduated from Niceville High School in 1999. Her mother, Sally Smith, was Miss Vermont in 1978 and a professional model for almost 10 years. They’re partners in Slender Smith’s on Airport Road in Destin.
But what really has launched Ginger Smith is her connection with Suddenly Slender. This company was founded by Victoria Morton, who invented a mineral body wrap in 1969 and who markets it globally today from Clearwater.
Before we go any further: Not an herbal body wrap. No, this involves “inorganic food grade minerals” (iron, potassium and magnesium are examples) and distilled water. It also involves wrapping yourself in elastic bandages and sitting in a dry sauna.

Morton told us last week that her company has sold nearly 12 million of these wraps. The Body Wrap is delivered throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, South America, Europe and the Middle East.

“It becomes a lifestyle for people,” Morton said.

She added that the best results are done through a series of wraps that eventually gives way to maintenance visits.

Ginger Smith received her basic license from Suddenly Slender in 1998. She started teaching and training with the company seven years ago. Three years ago, she said she started working on celebrity clients and last year she helped movie stars prepare for the Academy Awards show.

“Ginger is successful because she has always been passionate about helping people,” Morton said. “And from the very first day she was in training class, her focus was about taking the best qualities of every person and maximizing them. We have a saying, ‘We’ll change your body, change your mind, change your life,’ and Ginger is the real deal.”

Smith recently returned from Saudi Arabia, where she was providing her service to the royal family. Princess Fahda Bandar Al-Saud owns all the Suddenly Slender franchises in the Mideast and has invited Smith back in about six weeks.

“It was the best experience of my entire life,” Smith said. “I am hoping to bring the royal family here to vacation and eventually persuade them to purchase vacation homes in the future.”

Since her return, Smith has worked to prepare Jennifer Bennett from Niceville for her competition in the Mrs. America pageant in Daytona Beach this weekend. We’ll update you on that in the near future.

“I never thought that body wraps were going to be so popular,” Smith said in summing up her rise to becoming a global businesswoman. “I work hard and love what I do, and by the grace of God I’m here.”

• The lowdown: French owners David and Alexandra Daziano opened Le Boudoir Spa in March after learning the trade from David’s mother, who owned a spa in Cannes for more than 20 years.

It’s not just French in name. The Dazianos use French products Thalgo and Nuxe Paris for body wraps and facials. They also have a futuristic body capsule that acts as a solitary dry sauna and reaches a sweltering 145 degrees — the better to burn those calories, the Dazianos say.

• The neighborhood: The spa is a stone’s throw from Bal Harbour Shops but has none of its designer-duds-only feel. Metered parking is available along Kane Concourse and on side streets.

• The vibe: European, softly lit, unharried.

The couple has found the city codes a bit confounding. They’d love to add some window dressing but say that so far, they haven’t gotten approval. An unassuming lobby belies a richer interior, with a wide hallway leading to four treatment rooms, framed by heavy curtains.

”We are an intimate spa,” David Daziano said.

”And we are welcoming,” said Alexandra.

”Not pretentious,” David added.

• The highlights:Collagen facial is meant to fight aging, $120; Pre-natal message incorporates various touch techniques, $110; 30 minutes in the sauna capsule, according to the Dazianos, will burn 300 calories, $40; fight those dimples with an anti-cellulite wrap, $110.

ENGLEWOOD, FL – Charity Cain believes there are certain luxuries women won’t give up — even during economic uncertainties.

“The thing about Americans and Europeans is that they want to look pretty and will spend money on making themselves look good,” Cain said, “especially women.”

The former office where she began her career in real estate has been transformed into her latest business, Silhouettes Day Spa, located at 2240 S. McCall Road.

The path to the front door leads to a tranquil escape away from Englewood.

Once inside, the interior has been converted to a sea of deep burgundy, mahogany furnishings and gold trimming. Soothing music and scents of essential oils fill the air.

Above a product showcase are bold letters that spell the word “inspire.”

“That’s exactly what we want to do,” she said, “to inspire people when they come in here.”

Cain’s personal struggle became her latest endeavor.

After her fourth child, she felt uncomfortable with her body.

“I tried everything. I’ve gone to Walgreens, I’ve gone to Wal-Mart. I’ve bought every pill,” she said.

But it wasn’t until she traveled overseas when Cain discovered “Ionithermie” and decided to bring it to Englewood.

Ionithermie is a treatment involving the application of electronic stimulation to areas of the body through a body mask of conductive clay. The cost is $149-$159 per session.

Other services offered at the spa include five different types of massages including of Swedish, prenatal and couples; various facials, body wraps, spray tans and waxing services.

After three treatments, Cain was convinced.

“My skin was firmer, my stomach was more toned and I lost my stretch marks,” she said.

So she purchased the products and opened the spa Feb. 25.

As businesses are closing because of the economic crunch, Cain said she has been “slammed” and she believes the reason is she has products that people want.

When Tiffany McMenamin first heard about the Ionithermie treatments, she was skeptical.

But when she noticed Cain’s results, she budgeted for months in advance to be able to afford six sessions, totaling $800.

McMenamin, who just had a baby, said she noticed her dark purple stretch marks reduce to a pale white and she said that she lost a total of 32 inches.

“Before, it looked like Freddy Kruger attacked my body,” she said.

But after her treatments were complete, she was so impressed with the results.

“People will be hooked on it,” McMenamin said.
