Element Salon-Spa West Lafayette Indiana Open

May 16th, 2009

Kathy Jennings wanted to parlay her experience with salon and spa services into her own business. But she needed a partner.

Jennings turned to a client, Traci Shelmon, who has a background in interior design and nursing.

The result of their partnership is Element Salon-Spa, which opened earlier this month in Town Square retail center in West Lafayette.

“The last two years, the location I worked at — I had some ideas of my own. They did not want to take the business in the way I wanted,” said Jennings. “We have 16 work stations, two massage rooms, two facial rooms. We also have three pedicure and three nail stations.”

The business has 30 employees and a commitment to going green.

“We’re environmentally friendly and do total recycling with color bottles and boxes. We have a recycling bin instead of a trash bin,” said Jennings. “Bottles of shampoo and conditioner that we sell, when clients bring back the empty bottle they get 10 percent off on a refill.”

New clients get a complimentary paraffin hand dip and a makeup touchover, valued at $40. Repeat clients also receive complimentary services.

Day Spa Owner Closes One Spa Opens Another

February 26th, 2009

Rhonda Stonebreaker, the owner of the former Victorian Day Spa, understands the importance of location when it comes to her business.

She recently moved the business – a day spa and former bed and breakfast – from its place in a Victorian-style house on Jackson Street to the College Commons on Indianapolis Road across from Kroger. After the move, she renamed the business Mona Lisa’s Spa and Salon because the salon is no longer in its namesake house.

Stonebreaker owned the Victorian Day Spa for eight years. Several years after buying it, she paid to have the house moved from its location near Domino’s over to 2.5 acres of commercially zoned land. She then renovated the house, and in 2006 she bought a second building from the University – then known as Seminary Street Bed and Breakfast – to add on, and increased the capacity of the building from four to seven rooms.

However, by the time Stonebreaker went through all of the state requirements concerning the start of her business, it “financially drained” her, she said.

“I ended up losing everything that I worked so hard for and had to file bankruptcy on everything,” Stonebreaker said. “At this point I could have given up or continued pursuing my dream.”

Stonebreaker decided to open another salon and try again, this time focusing primarily on location and accessibility, because she thought her old business was “out of the way” for many clients.

While her new business no longer includes a bed and breakfast, it still offers a day spa and full-service hair salon where patrons can get massages, facials and waxes, as well as other services.

Stonebreaker is very optimistic. She believes the new location will definitely help business, mostly because of its highly visible location.

Although Mona Lisa’s Spa and Salon has only been open two weeks, Stonebreaker says she has already received “quite a few calls from DePauw students” and would love to have students come in.

“We are eager to serve the DePauw students,” Stonebreaker said.

Downtown salon adds day spa to second floor

Nichelle Sharp, a licensed cosmotologist, and Sage Harrington, an esthetician, are in charge of the facility on the second floor of the hair salon near downtown Lafayette.

The day spa offers manicures, pedicures, facials, massage, ear candling and has a separate makeup room.

“A lot of other salons and spas do offer facials and other things. We thought we could add on here so people have one place to get everything done,” Sharp said.

“A lot of people are coming in just for the spa.”

Full massage, Swedish massage and chair massage are all available.

“The chair massage and manicures and pedicures are most popular,” Sharp said.

Harrington is the son of business owner K.J. Nutt and enjoys working with his mother.

“It’s really fun. I love it,” he said. “We’re really similar, so for the two of us to be in the same building is fun.”
