Spa cited by Kansas State Board of Healing Arts Board

Andover spa owner cited for practicing medicine without a license

botox-injectionThe owner and operator of an Andover spa last week entered into a diversion agreement with the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts Board, following an investigation into whether she practiced medicine without a license.

Stacy Truesdell owns TA LLC, which does business as True Aesthetics Premier Laser and Medical Spa.

The board investigated allegations of instances occurring in October and November 2008. The board alleges Truesdell performed medical procedures without the supervision of a licensed practitioner of the healing arts and gave the impression she was appropriately trained and able to practice healing arts. Both are violations of Kansas law.

Procedures in the investigation included: Botox injections, laser hair removal treatments and laser surgery.

However, the board says it received no reports of any clients being injured as a result of the procedures performed.

The healing arts board says Truesdell cooperated fully with the inquiries, including providing documents in response to two administrative subpoenas and discussing the matter with board’s representatives.

Because of Truesdell’s corporation, the board agreed to forego any litigation as long as the terms of the agreement are met. The diversion agreement specifies:

• Truesdell will no longer perform Botox injections.

• TA LLC can’t employ anyone to perform Botox injections.

• Truesdell will no longer perform laser treatments.

• TA LLC will no longer employ anyone to perform laser treatments.

• Truesdell will cooperate with the board and its investigators concerning any subsequent investigations.

• TA, LLC will not use the term “medical” in any manner, including, signage and letterhead.

These stipulations, the board says, are subject to change should Truesdell become licensed.

The Spa Tuscano – Kansas City Day Spa answers spa Industry Questions

May 14th, 2008

Startup: A clear vision guides the Spa Tuscano toward the goal

After they sold their pet treat company in 2005, Joe and Judy Roetheli opened the Spa Tuscano last fall in Briarcliff Village.

The business: The Spa Tuscano, 4133 N. Mulberry Drive, Kansas City; 816-746-5333;

Owners: Joe and Judy Roetheli

About the business: “The Spa Tuscano is a wellness center in Briarcliff Village. The concept is somewhere between a normal day spa and a destination spa. We offer a number of unusual and elegant features, such as meandering hallways and indirect ‘cloud’ lighting. We are not there yet, but we are working hard to earn the reputation of being the best spa in the Midwest,” Joe Roetheli said.

Owners’ role: “We continue to set policies, strategies and goals, although we have a manager who runs the day-to-day operations.”

How long did it take you to start your business?

“We sold a previous company (S&M NuTec, maker of pet treats) in May 2005 and started thinking about what we wanted to do next. We used to have a massage therapist come in and give massages to employees in that business, and we took that concept forward. We started working diligently on the concept in July 2006 and opened the Spa Tuscano last November.”

What worked in starting your own business?

“We believe it is important to have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish and then get passionate and enthusiastic about it. Think very carefully about what you want to do and how you’re going to get there. We visited a number of spas around the country to get a feel for what they were doing. It boils down to being willing to take some risk and then getting out there and executing your plan day by day.”

What is your advice for others hoping to start their own businesses?

“Securing adequate financing is very, very important. A lot of people start businesses but run out of money if their projected growth doesn’t materialize.”

Did you reach a low point in this process and, if so, how did you overcome it?

“There are challenges to starting any new business. Our space looked big when we started out, but then it seemed to shrink somehow. It became hard to fit everything we wanted to do in the spa into the space we had available. Getting started and staffed without a reputation in the spa industry is not a piece of cake. You have to fight your way under, around or through those challenges.”

Is there anything else you would like to share related to starting a business in the hospitality industry?

“Too many people start a business because they think it will make a lot of money, even though it’s not something they enjoy. That’s backwards thinking. Instead, find something you enjoy doing, and think about how you can make money at it.”

Glamorous Salon and Spa – Garden City KS –

May 1st, 2008

Salon provides services from head to toe

At Glamorous Salon and Spa, it’s all about pampering the customers, owners Kaylee Vy Nguyen and Leslie White, who opened the business a month ago, said.

Spas In Kansas

White, who has about 20 years of experience styling hair and ran her own salon, Ad’d Touch for 16 years, said the ultimate goal at Glamorous Salon, 1110 N. Campus Drive, Suite C, is to meet every need of every customer, which is why the business offers a full line of services, from cuts and styles, to nail work, and skin care, including waxing and massage.

“Everything from head to toe,” White said.

Nguyen, who has three years experience as a stylist, said striking out and starting a new business had been a goal of hers and the timing was right for her financially. She also called up a friend who dabbles in Asian astrology who told Nguyen, whose sign is the rat, that it would be a good year to take on the endeavor.

White said the two complement each other by playing off of each other’s strengths in order to make sure the customer leaves happier than they were when they came into the salon.

“They come in stressed out — ‘Should I get my haircut? How should I get it cut?’ — and when we’re done, they’re not stressed out,” White said. “It’s wonderful to help people feel better about themselves.”Both admitted that with as many salons as there are in Garden City, standing out can be a challenge. In order to do that, the business offers monthly specials on products and services and customers can put their names in a box for drawings to win products and services. The two plan on coming up with specific specials for special occassions, such as Mother’s Day.

The business is open seven days a week, including 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, which both pointed out is relatively unique.

“We have some monthly clients who come in for a couple of hours of work and they are recharged for another month,” White said.

Even though there are plenty of salons in town, White points out that people aren’t always happy with a salon or switch salons to try something different or get a particular service done at one salon and a different one at another.

“It’s all about pampering and getting glamoured up,” White said. “We can do everything. It’s a one-stop shop. We are a full-service salon — and that’s just between the two of us.”
