Mario Tricoci Closes Ohio Day Spas

April 13th, 2009

Chicago salon operator Mario Tricoci is leaving Columbus on Saturday after 10 years at Easton Town Center.

The Columbus Mario Tricoci Salon and Day Spa will close at the end of that day, turning its attention to the company’s salons in its hometown and a single shop in Kansas City, said Chief Operating Officer Larry Silvestri. The company, he said, has found success in keeping the majority of its salons in one city and subsequently getting a better return on marketing – a strategy he dubbed “clustering.” The Columbus market didn’t fit into that approach, Silvestri said.

“We loved the demographic and we loved the community, but we found it difficult to really cluster within that particular market,” he said.

Silvestri also said the company, reaching the end of a five-year lease, couldn’t agree with the open-air shopping complex’s landlord on a base rent. The Easton operation was Tricoci’s lone salon in Ohio.

Silvestri said the salon’s 40 employees are in line for jobs at Columbus-based Charles Penzone Family of Salons, which has nearly 300 employees in its Central Ohio chain. All six of the company’s salons are in the region and are holding places for employees affected by the closure, about four in five of which already are preparing to interview for jobs, Silvestri said.

The partnership with Penzone, which includes the company honoring Tricoci gift cards beginning Monday, springs from a history between the companies’ founders, both members of Intercoiffure America/Canada, an association of salon owners.

The closing ends Tricoci’s tenure in Columbus, but Silvestri said the company won’t rule out another try.

“We might return, but at this time we want to concentrate on Chicago, where there’s a lot of growth,” he said. “It’s more low-hanging fruit for us.”

Spa Revenues up and Spa Is still Growing

March 23rd, 2009

Brent Johnson realizes people are cutting back on vacations in this tight economy. Because of that, he wants his salon — Square One Salon and Spa — to provide its customers a few hours of relaxation.

A lot of companies talk about customer service, but Johnson said in the salon industry, even a minor service gaffe can cost customers and tarnish a salon’s reputation.

So Johnson and his fellow owners instituted numerous policies to ensure those gaffes or oversights don’t occur, leaving customer feeling their dollars are well spent.

As such, Square One — which operates a downtown Dayton salon and one in Centerville — continues to flourish with revenue growing 20 percent last year to $2.5 million.

Adagio Day Spa Maumee Ohio Closed No Notice

November 13th, 2008

Maumee spa employees suddenly without jobs

Just months after celebrating its 5-year anniversary, Adagio day spa is now closed.
This came as a surprise to both employees and clients who say they had no idea the salon in the 3300 block of Briarfield was even closing.

Now, more surprises as Problem Solver Mika Highsmith finds checks are now bouncing.
“This is all my work stuff,” says Stylist Holly Tedrick. Tools for the trade were blow dryers and brushes that Tedrick used to store inside Adagio’s day spa.
But now that the door is locked.

Her tools are outside along with dozens of frustrated and confused employees and clients who had no idea it was coming. “Clients are walking up thinking they have appointments. Nobody knows,” says Tedrick.
“It was a complete shock,” says Stylist Kristi Feuerstein. Kristi doesn’t need another surprise. “My husband doesn’t have a job. He works at Delta at the airport,” she explains.

Her latest paycheck bounced.

Now she has to bounce back in this tough economy. “This can’t be happening. How can we both lose our jobs in like a week of each other?”

Not knowing how or why, Feuerstein says, “Nobody called us. No management.”
Problem Solver Highsmith contacted the owner of Adagio, who has not returned our calls. The company who runs the building also had no comment

She did find eight pending liens filed in the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas by the State of Ohio Department of Taxation.

“We just had a meeting last month. They said everything was great… and it’s just a smack in the face. I feel like I’ve been lied to,” Tedrick tells us.

Highsmith was told by employees the owner is in Florida right now. She is supposed to be in town on Saturday, July 19. Employees say they’ve been told they will get their money. In the meantime, most of the employees say they plan to press charges.

Spa takes advantage of location inside Polaris-area hotel

* Papillon Day Spa is slated to open next week, offering typical spa treatments as well as some unusual ones.

A longtime spa owner is hoping a spectrum of relaxation treatments both typical and atypical will draw customers to her new venture in the Polaris area.

Papillon Day Spa, located in the new Polaris Hilton.

Like most spas, Papillon offers the basics: facials, massages, manicures and pedicures. But owner Dee Crabb takes pride in even those basic services, she said.

“We have some excellent massage therapists, so we’re really excited about that,” she said. “We have six of them on staff.”

Alongside the massage rooms is the room for one of Papillon’s more off-the-beaten-path offerings: the salt glow treatment. The technique involves the use of salt mixtures to rub and exfoliate the skin, followed by a shower, leaving the recipient refreshed and “glowing” — hence the name, Crabb said.

“They’re very popular right now,” she said. “It’s just a very relaxing treatment.”

Body wraps also are part of the Papillon menu, Crabb said.

In addition to individual treatments, Papillon will offer group treatments for bridal parties or simple get-togethers.

“We can accommodate quite a few people in a party like that,” said Crabb.

Facials and massages start at $55 each and top out around the $90 range, while salt glow treatments are $90 to $95. Group packages are available.

A variety of makeup, skin care and other products will be offered in the spa lobby, as will such items as jewelry and purses.

“It’s like a little boutique,” said Crabb.

Crabb, a Westerville resident, previously operated Skin Resources, a northwest Columbus spa, for 13 years, and has more than two decades of experience in the spa industry.

Though located inside the Hilton, Papillon is not officially affiliated with the hotel; it leases its 2,800 square feet of space. But the location does present the spa with a significant opportunity to attract clientele, said Crabb.

Papillon can be entered through the hotel lobby or through its own separate entrance on the north side of the hotel.

The spa opens at 10 a.m. daily and closes at 7 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays; at 8 p.m. Wednesdays; at 9 p.m. Thursdays; and at 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
