In 2000, aesthetician Beverly Miller opened a tiny day spa with 100 clients and a passion for skin care.
Since then, the spa business has been expanded twice and not only offers outer beauty regimens, but inner ones, too.

Tranquility Skin & Body Care Center at 113 N. Second Ave. in the Century Corners shopping complex in downtown St. Charles, treats the skin and the spirit with its combined spa and wellness center offerings.

The spa first was located on Cedar Street, kitty-corner from its current address. Miller, who lives in St. Charles, made the move in 2003 for added space, picking up partner Loreta Lescelius in the process.
Soon after, natural nail services were added, staying away from artificial nails to keep in line with their holistic approach.

“Even our nail area is vegan, with no formaldehyde in any of our products,” Miller said. “That was in line with our true vision … to mold into a wellness center.”
Their vision came to life last fall in the form of a full wellness center — offering clients a variety of health and well-being options through alternative therapies — which opened on the spa’s newly renovated second floor.

“We have just remodeled the second floor with additional treatment rooms, and feature an infrared sauna and steam shower,” Miller said. “In addition to the existing skin-care treatments, body massage and nail care services, new offerings include nutritional counseling, life changes counseling, acupuncture therapy and permanent makeup.”

The spa now has a sprawling 4,000 square feet of treatment space, but a tranquil and cozy feeling still envelopes patrons when they walk in, Miller said.

“Once you hit the door, you immediately begin to relax,” she said.
Despite recent expansions and added services, facials always have been the spa’s featured service. Miller says the focus always is centered on the client.

“Our facials are more customer-oriented. We take a person and individually determine what their needs are,” Miller said. “We are very results-oriented. We want to see a change in your skin.”
Facials run $85 to $105 and last 75 minutes to 90 minutes. According to Miller, appointments are not booked consecutively. That way, a little time is left after one appointment ends so the client isn’t rushed.

Miller says her spa includes extras not readily found at most spas.
“Our signature treatment is the Tranquility Facial. We add a lot more than what other spas do … with a neck, shoulder, hand and foot massage,” Miller said. “Also, we don’t book hour by hour. That way, if (a client) needs something else, they don’t have to make another appointment.”
Gift certificates are available, and there’s a frequent-customer card, where points are accumulated based on dollars spent. Points can be redeemed for services.

In a downward economy, there’s always a concern that luxury spending will decrease. However, Miller said she hasn’t seen that happen yet. That could be due to the strength of fellow Century Corners businesses.
“We are a very strong group of business owners, and we get together regularly and work together to keep everyone busy,” Miller said. “We have a fabulous relationship.”

Miller’s business also remains strong due to the many clients who have become hooked on her spa services.

“I really have grown, and it’s all from referrals,” Miller said. “Our customers spread the word for us. We started with 100 names and have grown into a database with 7,000 people in it.”

Customers of former spa will get money back

When Spa 151 on the River closed without warning in late January, hundreds of customers were left holding worthless gift certificates and gift cards.

On Tuesday, after almost four months of investigation and negotiation, Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon announced those consumers will get their money back. Ashli and Scott Rowland, owners of the spa, and Brent Wills, a one-time business partner of the Rowlands, agreed to pay up to $103,000 in restitution.

The agreement will be enforced by the Cole County Circuit Court, where Nixon’s office filed a copy of the settlement. In addition, the Rowlands and Wills will pay $4,000 to the state to cover the cost of the investigation.

Since the spa closed, 358 consumers have filed complaints with the attorney general’s consumer affairs hot line, said John Fougere, press secretary to Nixon.

The voluntary agreement requires the Rowlands to pay $15,000 each and Wills to pay $30,000 into a restitution fund that will be managed by Nixon’s office. Should claims for restitution exceed $60,000, the Rowlands and Wills will be liable to cover up to $43,000 in additional claims, Nixon’s office said in a news release.

Spa 151’s troubles began during the divorce proceedings between Scott and Ashli Rowland. Late in January, Scott Rowland came to the spa, announced he was taking over from his estranged wife and changed the locks, according to several employee accounts. He told employees they could not honor the gift cards or certificates or accept credit cards. The employees, who as contract workers received a share of each sale as part of their pay, refused those terms, did not return to work, and the spa closed.

In an interview with the Southeast Missourian a week later, Ashli Rowland promised to make full restitution to all gift card and gift certificate holders. She promised at that time to set up a post office box to receive the cards and certificates.

But as complaints mounted, Rowland became impossible to reach and Nixon’s office promised to make her keep the promise.

“Consumers who paid up front for Spa 151 gift certificates did in good faith and had no reason to believe that the business was about to close,” Nixon said in the prepared statement announcing the refund deal. “Businesses that accept full payment up front for services to be delivered to consumers in the future have an obligation to deliver those services or provide refunds, regardless if they’re going out of business or experiencing financial problems.”

Neither Ashli nor Scott Rowland, both of whom have moved to Ashland, Mo., according to court records, could be reached for comment Tuesday. Neither could Wills, who operates an insurance brokerage in Jackson.

When Spa 151 closed, Wills said he had no responsibility for the operation of the business or the actions that forced it to close. He did acknowledge he was originally a partner in the spa and held a continuing interest in the property.

Putting it behind him

Investigators with Nixon’s office also found that Wills was not involved in the business when it closed.

“During our investigation it became fairly obvious that Mr. Wills hadn’t been involved in the business for some time,” Fougere said. “But he was willing to pay $30,000 to put this behind him.”

A new spa with no connection to the Rowlands or Wills, eDen Spa & Boutique, has opened at 151 S. Spanish St. The owner is Kristina Schumer.

Spa 151 operated at 151 S. Spanish St. for a little more than two years.

The refunds will be sent by the attorney general’s office from funds deposited by the Rowlands and Wills, Fougere said. Many of the complaints focused on gift cards sold in the periods immediately before Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

Of the initial $60,000, $7,392 will be used to reimburse credit-card companies that have already charged back the gift certificate purchases.

The additional $43,000 will be paid if claims exceed $60,000. Each of the Rowlands and Wills are liable for the amount, and Wills has opened a letter of credit with First Midwest Bank in Jackson with the attorney general’s office as the beneficiary to guarantee the payments.

Consumers who have already filed complaints with Nixon’s office and those who file complaints within the next 90 days are eligible for the refunds. Consumers seeking refunds will be required to provide proof of their purchase, Fougere said.

It’s a truism of business that some fail — especially when the economy turns down — but companies can soften the blow to clients, employees and investors with planning and communication, experts say.

The issue moved to the forefront this week when O’Neys Salon & Spa closed after 35 years in business, leaving some clients with unredeemed gift certificates and unanswered questions about what to do with them.

When it becomes clear that a company is facing its own demise, owners and senior executives have a moral obligation to alert customers, lenders, community leaders and others that the business will close, said Joseph Petrick, director of the Institute for Business Integrity at Wright State University’s Raj Soin College of Business.

Giving customers advance notice allows them to take advantage of gift certificates, Petrick said. And a heads up to employees gives them ample time to track down other work, especially in a tight labor market, and to make other preparations, he said. Companies that need to retain workers until the end can use bonuses and other incentives to keep them on board, he said.

Under certain circumstances, an abrupt closure makes sense, said Jay Janney, an associate professor of management and marketing at the University of Dayton.

A shutdown can be appropriate when prompted by such things as an owner falling seriously ill, a firm not having the money to pay bills or a fire or natural disaster striking a business, Janney said.

In some cases, a competitor can become an ailing business’ ally.

Janney said the owner of a foundering business can strike deals with competitors to have them honor coupons or gift certificates, and then clue customers into the arrangement. Giving customers somewhere to go when you close the doors keeps bitter feelings to a minimum, he said. And sometimes companies step up without prompting and agree to accept the gift certificates.

In the case of pharmacies and professional firms such as veterinarians, dentists and accountants, the owner often sells her customer list to a competitor who then can offer their services to the client.

Petrick said that business owners have an ethical responsibility to settle their bills before they close. One option, he said, is for a company to contact suppliers and see whether they can take back inventory rather than demanding payment for it. If that doesn’t work, Petrick said, a business also can try selling inventory to a competitor to generate cash to pay debts.

Do you have a marketing plan in place? Do you have your promotions mapped out for next year? Did you keep track of the results of this year’s Ads, Public Relations and promotions efforts?

Preparation and planning are key components of success in business. Your spa business plan for 2008 should focus on the ways to build spa business.

Why should you do promotions? Seasonal promotions help you create retail and service excitement. A well developed promotion does not have to be about discounting services or products. Promotions also help stimulate your staff. Most marketing and promotional programs fail due to of lack of planning, staff support, communication and staff training; also lack of communication with your customers and lack of advanced notice to your vendors.

The Marketing plan, be creative, brain storm ideas on themes for ad copy for your advertising, brochures, website, etc. Tell a story and be consistent with the story you are telling, use the KISS principle (keep it simple and easy to follow). Include the following components:

Who are you?

Story behind your conception, creation, name.

What services do you offer? What do you do? How do you do it?

How are you different from your competition?

What can you offer that they don’t have?

Who are you targeting as your market segment?

What products do you carry and why?

What supports your Menu of Spa Services and concept?

What are the benefits to your clients

What is your Pricing Strategy? What is your competitors’ current prices?

Look back at your original business plan it should have included a Marketing Section. This is a good starting point. What did you say you were going to do to promote your business? Did you do it? Did it work? Take that information and use it to write your new strategy. You will want to update the information:

Who is your target market?Analyze who your target markets are? According to Info Salon Marketing the target market for a Day Spa client is within a 7 mile radius of your facility. What groups do you have in that 7 mile radius? Are you promoting to them? How? In your plan decide how you will advertise to them, how you will communicate your promotions to them? Radio, web spa deals, direct mail campaigns, email blasts, pay per click advertisement, Spa Newsletter, and Billboards are just a few of the ways you can get your name and your services out there. We recommend you create an Inside Promotions Program and an Outside Promotions Program. Basically the inside program communicates to your spa clients within your spa walls and the outside program gets your message out to potential new clients and the community at large.

Do you have a message for when guests are on hold? This message should promote your spa services and products. Spa Audio is a very powerful tool. Make sure it is professionally recorded. Use talking cards or signage professionally done in the spa’s front desk area, retail area, waiting area, treatment areas, changing rooms and bathrooms. Use Spa TV in the waiting area with a video loop to feature spa services and the benefits of those services. This message should be current and consistent with what your current offers. Too many offers may confuse the clients. Vendors are a great resource for beautiful art work and promotional materials to assist you promote the services or products.

For Outside promotions you can use: PR work through press releases and television, Email, Spavelous “Now You Are In The Know” Weekly Spa Magazine, Direct Mail, a SEO website, Web Spa Deals billboards, flyers, paid print/radio advertising, new media advertising, mixer events and donations to nonprofit organizations that include ad space in their promotions and programs.

Once completed Map out your plan, start with a calendar of holidays and events. Next map out what services and promotions fit the event. If you have a gap, you may want to introduce a seasonal product. Look at your budget and determine what media you will be able to use for each promotion.
