Austin Men’s Exclusive Barber Spa To Close March 31st

March 1st, 2009

el-rey-out-of-business

El Rey,the men’s high-end grooming and wellness spa, will close its doors effective March 31.

El Rey’s owner, Clint Campbell, said the downtown business “is not a viable [one] at this time.”

“I believe in this model and someday I may reopen El Rey with a different approach that will achieve the needed financial viability and the high quality service experience you have grown to expect. We did have something very special,” he said.

The spa, a little over two years old, targeted 35- to 55-year old business executives offering everything from hot-towel shaves and facials to steam rooms and deep tissue massages. Campbell, a former Dell Inc. executive, spent about $1.7 million of his own cash creating and finishing out the Mediterranean-style club at 311 W. Fifth St.

The spa’s site is being offered for sale or lease by the Weitzman Group.

Fire Closes Salon and Spa in Arlington

February 27th, 2009

daireds-salon

A fire at a popular Arlington salon and spa will keep the doors closed through the end of the month.

For more than six hours, 45 firefighters battled a 3-alarm fire at Daired’s Salon and Spa Pangea at Interstate 20 and Bowen Road early Sunday morning.

Most of the back of the building was destroyed and the company said the structural damage was significant but limited to the rear of the building and a small collapse on the second floor.

spa-pangea1On Daired’s Web site, the company said the fire was electrical and started between the building’s two floors.

There were no injuries reported and Daired’s expects to be closed through at least March 1.

El Pasoans Spend More On Needs, Less On Wants

EL PASO, Texas — At Foliage Hair Salon And Day Spa a spa in West El Paso, you can get your hair done, manicures, pedicures and massages to relieve your stress. Lately, the stress has been not just on the customers, but also on the business.

Massage therapist Danny Venzor walks into his massage room for another day of work at Foliage. Instead of doing what he loves, he will sit and read a book. His two customers for the day both canceled.

“People that I’ve known for years that come by more often, tend to come by much less often then they used to,” said Venzor.

Venzor told KFOX the customers are not only coming by less, but spending less when they get here.

“A lot of things that people consider to be luxuries, they tend to forgo those first,” said Venzor.

That seems to be the the trend in all departments at Foliage.
“Our clients are scheduling farther apart, instead of every six weeks, they might be coming in every eight weeks instead,” said Joemily Prieto with Foliage.

Many economic experts say what’s happening here at Foliage is happening to a lot of companies, and that many businesses are now feeling the heat.
“A lot of people will put off buying major household appliances, they’ll put off purchasing large-scale furniture, they’ll also delay automobile purchases,” said Tom Fullerton, a professor of Economics at UTEP.

So at Foliage the music remains off, the candles remain unlit, and Venzor must wait for gas prices to drop, and the economy to turn around.
“Well, it makes me worry about how I’m going to pay the rent, and how I am going to come up with certain funds for certain basic costs,” said Venzor.

Out of all the reasons why people are spending less money at places like Foliage, the number one reason people told KFOX was gas prices.

Miss McGillicuddy’s Salon and Spa – Diaboll TX Day Spa Opens

Meet Miss McGillicuddy: spa labor of love for Smith

Mandy Smith manages Miss McGillicuddy’s Salon and Spa, formerly known as Heavenly Paradise Salon.

Heavenly Paradise Salon and Spa is about to get a new name, if it hasn’t already. Meet Miss McGillicuddy’s Salon and Spa.

Miss McGillicuddy is Mandy Smith, who is managing the place for her parents, Raymond and Kim Smith, who run the Service- Masters operation in Diboll.

The nickname goes back to her early childhood, when her father started calling her “Myrtle McGillicuddy.” He kept at it long enough to embarrass her as a teen-ager when she had boyfriends over to the house. Now she’s taking a lemon and making lemonade.

The salon and spa, on U.S, 59 near the Farm Road 2497 intersection, specializes in tanning and nail care, although Smith said she is looking for a hair stylist. She’s also adding a small boutique to the operation, featuring purses, candles and gift items.

“Diboll’s probably not big enough to support everything we have, but I’m hoping people will be loyal,” she said.

She’s not worried about the economy. “Tanning’s pretty discretionary. That’s why we’re putting in the boutique,” she said.

This is her first job as a manager, but she’s sure she can handle it, having previously worked in a tanning salon. Before taking over Miss McGillicuddy’s, she was doing marketing for ServiceMasters.

Her family moved to Diboll when she was in the eighth grade, then moved to Beaumont just before her senior year. She spent a year at Lamar University there, then attended college in Tennessee before returning to Diboll at the same time, late 2006, her parents moved back here. She plans to complete her degree but isn’t in a super hurry about it.

The transition from the former ownership has been smooth, she said, with the employees staying for the new regime. For now, she’s intent on establishing the business for the long haul.

“I’d like to invite everybody to come by.”
