Weekend Getaway Kohler: The art of pampering
This article is brought to you by Spavelous.com.
If your idea of romance involves indulgences – chocolates and maybe even a little spa treatment – you’re only an hour away from the luxuries offered in Kohler.
What to do: The Kohler Waters Spa, 501 Highland Drive, has elevated pampering to an art form, how else could you explain the “chocolate pedicure,” a soak in chocolate milk, followed by a chocolate espresso foot scrub, hot fudge mask and mint-lotion massage. And that’s just for the feet – all while you are indulging in Kohler-made chocolate confections. To make an appointment, call (800) 344-2838. This service is available through Feb. 28. The array of treatments and services also offered here is ultimately pampering; there are massages for two, a full menu of services for expectant mothers and day trip packages that include lunch. There’s even a special massage just for golfers – best to save that one for spring. Visit www.destinationkohler.com/spa for details. The spa, as is the American Club resort, is well regarded, not just among us locals or folks driving up from Chicago. Visit the Mobil Travel Guide (www.mobiltravelguide.howstuffworks.com, do a search for “romantic spas” and it’s one of the first spas listed in the United States.) All of the attractions and accommodations in the village operate under the auspices of the Kohler Company. For those unfamiliar with the area’s history, the village of Kohler was envisioned by Walter J. Kohler (son of founder John Michael Kohler) as the community for workers who manufactured plumbing goods at the factory. The dormitory that housed the bulk of the workers, for example, is now the luxurious American Club. Things do change over the course of a century. A stroll through the Shops at Woodlake, 725 Woodlake Road, a collection of 25 boutiques and specialty shops, should include a visit to the Kohler Demonstration Kitchen, where guest chefs and chefs from the Kohler properties and golf clubhouses give demonstrations and classes. These typically take place Saturday mornings and afternoons ($25 per person/$40 for two); visit the Kohler Web site for a schedule. Mark your calendar for March 28 and 29, when Christopher Kimball, host of America’s Test Kitchen and editor and publisher of Cook’s Illustrated, visits for a variety of presentations. Even if you’re not going to be revamping your kitchen or bathroom anytime soon, a quick walk through the Kohler Design Center and company museum, 101 Upper Road, is worth a visit. If you’re planning a remodel, devote an afternoon, as it is a haven of inspiration. It is one of the few amenities in Kohler that is free – as are the dreams that will take you home.
Where to stay: There are two options in Kohler, the venerable American Club, 419 Highland Drive, and the Inn on Woodlake, 705 Woodlake Road. Through April, the American Club is offering a romantic escape package that includes breakfast in the Wisconsin Room and discounts on spa services. For information, visit www.destinationkohler.com, go to the American Club page, click on “Packages” and then click on “Couples Packages.” The Inn on Woodlake also offers various packages, including girlfriend getaway packages that include $50 gift certificates for the Shops at Woodlake.
Where to dine: A new restaurant, Craverie, just opened in November in the Shops at Woodlake. It includes the confectionery where Kohler Original Recipe Chocolates are made, and a full menu divided into two parts: “Craverie Lean,” features healthy options, and “Craverie Indulgence,” for the many decadent options, ranging from chocolates, pastries, gelato, cakes and brownies. Even though golfing is still months away, the clubhouse restaurants at Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run have reopened for the season. How to get there: Kohler is one hour north of Milwaukee. Take I-43 north to Highway 23 west. Travel about two miles on Highway 23 and turn south onto County Road Y/Highland Drive. In less than a mile, you’re in Kohler.
